Yeah, I have a "friend" that told me the same thing. He said it was TOTALLY true and I believe him.

I like the idea of the new Supra. Just not the sticker price. It's got a BMW engine, which is just fine by me. Outsourcing to the Germans is a great idea because they know how to build engines. REALLY FAST ENGINES! The seatbelt recall aside, they will still probably sell a ton of these, and then BMW and Toyota will get owner feedback, and in the next 2-3 years it will be tweaked and will likely be a great car. Still will be too expensive. I could do a whole lot to my Tundra with $50K.

Ok. Just saw my first one in the way back from the rodeo. It sure doesn’t make me think of the old Supra at all. Kinda makes me think of a z4....

It’s probably ok for what it is but it ain’t a grand tourer like the original was. I heard Toyota gave BMW fits on reliability and durability testing during design. Maybe it’ll be a gem. Time will tell.

    Saw in person also.
Saw in person also. "Not bad" is inaccurate its pretty bad...darn fugly. Nothing close to previous. Maybe will eventually grow on you. Its kinda small chick car (no offense to women).

I had the 93.5 TT premiere edition in manual w 90k miles. Sold in 2002 for 20k to buy tacoma. Bad decision? Just seeing the outrageous prices now makes me regret it. Per Rick Harrison "you can list it for anything but it will never sell" Lol

I love it and I want one. Can't afford a second vehicle, but everything I've seen makes me think this would be a perfect weekend and fair weather car. And I think it's gorgeous. Wasn't sure at first, but I love it now.

I’d pay brand new prices for a new MKIV if they produce brand new ones, unfortunately, a decent used one is now in the 60k+ :(

It s been out for a few years for the second time, but I was sold on the 2021 camaro. It s the base model, but for 36k you get the LT1 (model) with an (LT1) c7 corvette engine and suspension. Add dual mode exhaust, and recaro bucket seat options, and you have a 450 hp kick in the pants. I should have mine in about a month:D Oh, and I opted for the 10 speed auto with paddle shifters[IMG]

A few years ago I thought I will definitely buy a new Supra when they come back. I like the prototype Supra but when I see the actual Supra at the dealership, I am so disappointed and decided to buy the TUNDRA.

But but but this one doesn't come stock from the factory with 3000 whp like the MkIV... When and why did Toyota stop trying?!

In all seriousness, if I was buying a fun car, I'd probably go with either a GT86 for $35k or one of the modern muscle cars for $38k CAD (or $55k for the Challenger I would get), rather than this for $61k+.

Been window shopping the Supras, got an up close view of one when I picked up a mark IV Supra strut brace at the local stealership... Looked good from my point of view, hella small though in comparison to my 02 Celica plus poor visibility... The good news Toyota restarted making parts for the 2JZ, so they may be getting around to splitting from BMW and restart making it their own.... Very much like the iQ?? Toyota manufactured it with Aston Martin as a swatch Brand or something along the lines..

I saw the Supra in person last week while taking my Sequoia in for the airbag recall. It looks pretty sweet to me, especially in red! Yet, let’s be honest it probably went something like this...

Toyota: Hey BMW can we rebadge your Z4 and call it Supra?
BMW: Sure for a small fee!
Toyota: (Looking at fee) Is that with the engine or without?
BMW: Yeah that’s everything except the logos.
    Toyota: WE’LL TAKE IT!!!!

Toyota got lazy and didn’t want to put the research in! Hell they already had a winner in the “old” design all’s they to do was resurrect it and everyone would have been happy! Tweak here, tweak there and BOOM...WINNER, WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!!!

I'm just surprised they did it that way given that they're known for reliability and BMW isn't. And, from what I've heard, it's not like it's this great driving car anyway so I'm not really sure what BMW was supposed to bring to the table.

I've heard good things about the driving experience and handling. BMW is actually pitched as "The ultimate driving machine" and many would say they are a blast to drive. Also, again from what I've read, Toyota gave BMW a bit of hell about getting the reliability up to snuff. It's a reworked B58 engine that Toyota was willing to put their name on. Yes, it's BMW at it's core, but it's been gone over by Toyota. I view it similar to how Roush or Shelby will go over a mustang or even an F150 and then add their name to it. Where Roush and Shelby pursue performance, Toyota would pursue reliability. A bit of research into the engine also shows that it has been a good performer and pretty reliable. Where BMWs lose their reliability is in their 8+ cylinder engines.

I personally think this was an absolute masterstroke in terms of marketing and preserving their brand. It has allowed them to revive an iconic model of the past while maintaining a perfect scapegoat for the fanboys/girls to point at if anything goes wrong. Diehard Toyota fanatics my complain about Toyota's decision to attach the Supra legacy to this vehicle, but any actual problems will be laid at BMW's feet. On the other hand, if the car performs well and maintains a good record of reliability, Toyota can be lauded as making a great decision to bring back a classic without having to break the bank. It really does give them the best of both worlds. To put it simply, this was a brilliant business move on Toyota's part.

I know Car and Driver rated the Supra last in a comparison test they did of about 8 sporty/ performance cars a while back (can't remember details) but I think there might have been something wrong with the way the car they had was set up as a couple guys from Toyota were working on it midway through the test.

Full disclosure, I've not seen any direct comparisons.

I have watches some youtube reviews and the general impressions seemed to be ok. To get a less stuffy, stuck up review I will frequently watch a review from The Straight Pipes on youtube. It's a couple of Canadian buddies who get to play with cars. One is more of a car guy, the other is more of your typical consumer. Rough translation; one of them cares what the stats are and the other cares what it feels like to drive and what features it has. I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with both on various points in their reviews.

    For any interested

In all honesty, I hope the fact that this is a reskinned BMW tanks its resale so I can get one years down the road on the cheap. :drevil:

Yeah it looks a lot better in person but as others have said, it's priced too high. Just like everything else I guess.

they’re fast and they handle really well. I didn’t like the idea of collaborating with bmw at first, but I think it was because that’s what the bandwagon was saying. I think it would make for a great track car. As far as cost, the turbo manual in 1998 supra was $40k. $50k for a brand new 2020 with way more tech doesn’t seem bad.

The first thing I thought of when I read what you said was when AMF took charge of Harley Davison for a few years when things were tough for them. It eventually turned around, and it s all history now, but it made for an ineresting time. This bmw toyota colaberation may be just as interesting in the end.

I don't mind collaborations as long as they end result is good. Look at the Subaru BRZ and the Toyota 86. Granted, I believe Toyota has a 10% ownership in Subaru or something like that. Can't remember where I read that, so I might be remembering incorrectly.

I have a BMW with the N55 I6 engine and it is a blast to drive. However, everything is made with cheap plastics and cheap rubber gaskets which all fail (every N55 engine has the same problems). This has discouraged me from buying another BMW, no matter how fun it was to drive. The N55 has won Ward's Auto Top 10 engines a few times so these awards mean nothing to me. The Toyota is a bit more boring and slower off the line but I like not worrying about oil leaks or water pump failures. As for the V8s, when I was active on the BMW forums, the N63 engine found on the non M cars were problematic but the S63 engine is supposedly better and more reliable than their non M counterparts.

I'm not enough of a gear head to say much hear, but I thought the Supra got a B58 engine?
