My sunroof is stuck open, is there a way to manually close it? Besides the dealership, you guys know of a shop I can take it to in the San Jose area? Mine is a 2014 platinum.

    Thanks in advance!!!

Is it trying to close at all or anything? I wonder if there is a reset function like the windows have for travel limits that may be getting you.

Have you tried overriding it with the key in the door lock?
Put your key in the door, turn and hold it to the locked position. If is doesn't move, check fuses.

Yes, I tried the door lock and it only closes the windows.

I’m trying to locate the fuse, and it’s not under the hood.

Nah, I don’t think there’s a way to do it manually other than what’s already been mentioned and shy of pulling it out by hand (which I wouldn’t recommend)

May be a solenoid or motor problem. (From you mentioning a clicking noise)

Hope it’s nothing too serious - or pricey!

Besides the fuse, is there a relay for the sunroof? If so, is it in the fuse box under the hood?

Mine was the sunroof motor. I ended up buying a used motor on ebay.

I know what you mean. Toyota uses the same sunroof motor for many Toyota and Lexus models.

My Moonroof stuck open for the second time yesterday. It was not to hot, around 85 degrees. First time, a few weeks ago, sbout same level temp outside. 1st time, on my way to dealership was able to close it after it seemed to cool the roof area. Was able to reclose it this morning after cooling down overnight. Possible motor brushes sticking?? Calling Dealership to followup. Will keep forum Updated. Approx milage 35,500.

Some vehicles have a secret panel plug you pluck out and there is a allen screw behind it to manually shut your sunroof. It might say in the manual or not, but at least look closely and see.

My sunroof would not close yesterday after I tilted it open to vent the truck in the 103 temps. I pulled the motor down and held it in front of the AC vents and tap it with a wrench for 10 minutes and it would run for a second at a time. It was enough to get the sunroof down. I need to run the re-alignment sequence, but the motor will not run continuously to do it. I reached out to Roman for the new part link and I was looking for an aftermarket motor without success.

Bought a 2012 model about 4 months ago. 150K miles. The sunroof has always been kind of sluggish. Today it stuck open. Fuse good. Push the buttons and there would be a slight click-clock. Toyota wants upwards of $1000 to replace motor. YIKES. Great motivator though. The motor is accessed by removing 4 star screws in the 2 compartments for and aft of the sunroof switches. Then (2) 10 milometer bolts and unplug harness and motor and gear box is in your hands. Then 3 phillips head screws remove the motor from the gearbox. Pull out the rotor. (There are permanent magnets holding it in.) My commutator was black from bad brush contact. Cleaned the commutator with pencil eraser and put it back in the stator. The only difficult part was getting the brushes back to allow the commutator to seat. I had to undo the little spring that pushes the brushes in, then almost seat the commutator, and then rehook the springs. Sounds dilfficult but it's really not. There is a washer just before the commutator that holds the brushes back when you reset the springs. Anyways...not too hard. Sunroof works better than ever. If you have an electrician friend he should be able to help you out. Wish I had taken pics for ya'll.

In response to TwoLaneBlacktop, here some pictures for sunroof motor removal and 2 pictures of what to clean. Clean where my pick is pointing.20201024_115239.jpg 20201024_115204.jpg 20201024_115009.jpg 20201024_114949.jpg 20201024_114351.jpg 20201024_114528.jpg 20201024_114502.jpg

Trickiest part is pushing the brushes back to get motor repeated. I used my pick and only had to push one brush over. Took longer to create this post than fix sunroof motor.
Great explanation TwoLaneBlacktop! I'm leaving to go out of town tomorrow and freaked out when sunroof stuck open. Hope these pictures help.

Another satisfied customer, and i thank you all! Sunroof wouldn't close well, but opened easily. took apart and cleaned the two pieces pointed to above well. I actually used a rag and some alcohol to clean it off well, being careful not to get it anywhere else. i had a second set of hands help hold the brushes back with toothpicks while i slid the other part in. It doesn't close fast, still a little rough, but it works much better! it is a 2005!

I spoke too soon. It definitely worked better after cleaning, but only once or twice. opens fine, but from fully open to about 1/4 open while closing there is a lot of resistance, and then it works fine. odd, like something else stopping it possibly?
but if you quickly push and let go of the close button, it slowly pushes close every time. it can do short blasts, just can't get thru the whole thing without some assistance (me pulling some). any ideas, or just bad motor likely?

So i tried the initialize sequence, didn't help. took the motor back out and noticed it did not slide easily by itself. so cleaned up the tracks and greased them some, worked it back and forth so it moves easier. put the motor back, but now the sequence is off, it won't open all the way, and the auto close runs it through closed, tilt all the way up, back down and then opens the roof about 2-3 inches. I tried disconnecting battery and tried the intialize sequence again which always does the same thing. Runs through the close cycle, tilt cycle, leaves it open 2-3 inches. how do i fix this??

Wanted to say THANKS for this thread!

Same thing happened to me today as I went to open my sun roof, it moved a few inches then quit. I was trouble shooting it in the stores parking lot by checking the fuses and reading the owners manual and when I searched Google this was the first return!

Cleaning the motor as described above worked well enough for me to get the sun roof closed but the motor is shot and I am on the hunt for a new one. I have also pulled the fuse so I don't accidentally open it again! :)

Anyway the post above by Cfincke mentioned that he reached out to "Roman"... I would love to reach out to this guy as well if he has a hook up that is better than Toyota who is asking $651.14 for a replacement motor! Do any of you know Roman, and or do any of you know where I may secure a replacement motor that isn't the cost of a down payment on new truck? :).

2015 1794 with barely 50,000 miles in it.

I have not been able to locate an aftermarket motor. I have the fuse pulled as well.
Roman provided me with the below part number, but yeah the cost is up there. I barely used mine in the almost 5 years I have had the truck. It failed with less use than the door lock motors. Eventually I will bit the bullet and order it.

Thanks for this. $438 is still the cheapest I've been able to find. The devil in me wants to go take a tundra for a test drive and you know.... pull down the map lights and "inspect" that trucks Sun Roof motor. For Science of course.

Found this online in prep of my new motor arriving.

Baby the slide switch until the sunroof closes. Push the TILT button until roof goes up and hold it until it starts to operate and keep holding until it cycles closed.

Yeah, I saw that as well. Was waiting for better weather. Motor seems to work well, but I can’t do the process above. The slide button will run it through the tilt cycle and open until about 90%, the last 10% of opening requires tilt button. So it’s like it is exactly backwards? If you follow. I’m going to take the motor off again and move it manually, reattach where I think it should be and try again. This seems more a hardware cycle than a software reset if you will?!?

crazy, i've never heard of this... does this apply to all the powered glass (windows, sunroof, rear window)?

Again, i think this is more of a hardware pattern the motor runs, not a software reset so to speak. So to me, opening the sunroof all the way with the motor out (manually pushing) and then running the motor while not attached to the roof until it is at the same point, all the way open. then putting the motor back would sync it up. However, when the motor runs all the way out, the tilt button still has some effect, and this is unexpected to me?
So my next steps were to baby bump it until it was closed (as closed as i thought it gets). Then drop the motor and run the motor closed instead of open, until it stops. At that point there is play in the tilt up button, which you would expect. so ideally they are both at closed point. This seems to work, its cycling properly mostly. idk, not sure its right, but i think i am going to just close the roof, pull the fuse for it and call it good.
