Iceland is nice in August. It was a little chilly in May.

Perhaps I am just missing something. Given OPs location and that it would start in county jail here in California, I figured this is where he was being being sentenced.. Texas is just the location of the federal prison..

also not an expert, and definitely think they should get real legal advice outside of our Tundras community hahaha

Yeah he has legal counsel, I just wanted to see what people here would think. He wants to wait for the Texas prison but he also wants this over with so he was considering County.

If he's got the money, he can pay for a prison consultant. They specialize in coaching people about to go to prison. There are consultants that specialize in the federal system. That would be his best bet.

If he's going to a minimum security fed facility, he'll be there with a bunch of white collar criminals that committed low level federal felonies. Martha Stewart served at a minimum security federal women's prison. IMO, I'd wait for the fed lock up.

I worked for a calibration lab that had Unicor as a client. Unicor is contracted with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Inmates in good standing would get to work on the Unicor contracts. I would go onsite to the prisons where Unicor had FBP contracts to calibrate the test equipment that the prisoners would use. One now closed FBP facility that I would go to was near Boron, Kommiefornia in the Mojave Desert just north of Edward's AFB. To my surprise the first time I drove up to the entrance.......no gate, no fences! My tool box was checked for contraband and I had to turn in all coins and $ bills that were on me. Around $10K......ha....
This was a low security FBP site. Good place for a Canuck in trouble. All inmates were in good standing. Lifer Trustees and newbie non violent offenders. Most of the lifers I met had committed murder and were a bit older. The non violent offender newbies were mostly lawyers...ha! and rich drug offenders who had good lawyers...ha! The inmates were primarily refurbishing transmission assemblies for Abrams tanks. Bottom line....Club Mojave.
Another FBP facility that I'd go to was a Medium II site located on part of the old George AFB site. NOT CLUB MOJAVE....
I could not bring any tools into the facility, only my calibration standards required to do the job. Tools were provided. A total pain getting through security. Let's put it this way...I couldn't lollygag out the facility for lunch. I was in prison! No Taco Hell in Victorville for me. Inmate lunch. The inmates in good standing were working on a Unicor contract refurbishing big ass Navy forklifts. One inmate was assigned to help me. A kid. Hispanic. Maybe 20 years old. Scared. Newbie non violent RICO fed drug charge. 25 years. F**k! Not a good place for your Canuck friend. Lunch wasn't bad.:puke::puke:

Figured I would post an update. I learned a bit more of the situation after this thread was started. The Texas facility he is in specializes in holding inmates meant to be deported after their stay is over. He will be sent to Canada once his stay is completed.

He waited for the prison rather than going to county. His first two weeks were completely miserable, he almost had mental breakdowns a few times, but not for reasons you might think.

Due to Covid concerns he was placed in isolation for 2 weeks, basically solitary confinement with no TV, no clock, no daylight, no way to tell time. Nobody to talk to and no exercise time. The meals were the only way he had any idea what time or day it was.

Once his quarantine was done he was put into a small population, he said its like living in a dorm. He made friends pretty quickly and here is where the funny part comes in. He's an occupational therapist, so he started trading massages for toiletries. Apparently its a good hustle. Don't ask if he's doing happy endings, I couldn't ask him over the line but was so tempted

A benefit to Covid, he says they get a lot of extra phone time to check on friends and family. Thats been helping him feel normal. Overall doesn't sound too bad.

When incarcerated, a good hustle is a plus. My buddy, the artist, when serving minor county jail time, spent his days drawing inmates GF's in exquisite detail with over large cartoonish breasts. Yeah, Im serious.

He said it paid well in commissary items, so my thought is, do you, whatever that is.
