Still haven’t found parts for the other chainsaw. But found this old thing in the barn too. Appears to all be there. I might try to get it running this week

Interesting saw ! Have never run across an IEL before . If the cylinder looks good ,and you hav spark , it’ll run . Should be appropriately loud to . On most old saws , I think the thing that they called a muffler was there just to keep you from getting your fingers in the cylinder . . .

I’ve been stuck at Toyota school, but possibly tonight I’ll mess with it. Hope it does run. Seems like a neat old machine

IEL’s are fairly rare on the saw forums . But they seem to be well regarded . Don’t expect it to turn a ton of rpm .Maybe 5-7k . Also when you make your fuel mix use 4oz (32-1) to a gallon for the first runs. It probably called for 16-1 back in the day . But, the oil used was 30w non detergent .

Hmm. The pioneer needs soaking in the cylinder but I don’t see damage. So it’s going to soak for a wee bit.
But my Mcculloch. I want to get that sucker running. No luck finding recoil covers and a chain brake though. Know of any other models that had parts that would work?

I also have no spark. But I believe the coils bad and that I can easily find NOS

What model McCulloch is yours , is it a model 81 ?I’ll see what I can locate . No spark can be ,and likely is the problem with a saw of that vintage . This may help in locating parts for it http://www.barrettsmallengine.com/partslist/mccullochsuperpro81.pdf
If you type mcculloch ,the name of the part ,and PN into your search engine ,sometimes you can find some hard to find parts .
And there is no chain brake some on those .They could be bought with ,or without . I’ve got a model 15 that doesn’t even have a clutch cover . Throwing a chain can get interesting ...

It’s an SP81 the chain brake was there at some point. I can see the cover is setup for it. But the spring and handle are all gone. The coils cracked. Haven’t checked the condenser yet.

Well the pioneer is seized solid still. I’ll let it soak more. But to do so I have to pull the carb. Putting it up for now. I believe it’s an old chrome lined cylinder so... who knows

Old saws do take some perseverance at times . So, don’t give up on them . It’s pretty rewarding when you finally get to hear one of the come back to life .

Picked up an early production 026 . ( oiler operates whenever the engine runs ) Had over170 psi compression . Changed the AV mounts ,Made a fuel line , drained out the swamp water from the tank ,new fuel filter ,rebuilt the carb , trued the bar . Runs very nice for a 24 year old saw . Actually you said a lot there . The old Poulans were U.S. made ,and very well built . In fact the made a lot of stuff for Craftsman . If you find an old Craftsman saw ,and the model # begins wit 358 , it’s a Poulan ,and is generally worth fixing up .

Thanks ! I repair a lot of these . This one was a guy’s “ loaner “ and spent a lot of time sitting in a case ,and neglected . I made him a real reasonable offer for it . As a side note , his Dad showed up here with two saws . A Husky 353, and a Stihl 029. The 353 was just a clean up chain sharpening and carb limiter reset . The 029 had had some hack do carb work . Put a decent rebuilt HD18 carb on it , replaced some missing pieces ,cleaned it up ,and sharpened the chain . Put it in the case that the 026 came in . Gave it all back to him . He’s 87 , raised a great family ,and still cuts firewood ! No charge . . .m

Well I just have to say that I love chainsaws about as much as I love Toyota. My introduction to chainsaws was when I was 17 working for the depart of the interior. It was a Stihl and was an amazing saw, no clue what model but just made a lasting impression on me as a young guy just getting into working mode.

My trusty old Husky L65 that was still my go-to saw until this spring. Camping, a load or two if firewood per year, it never missed a beat other than a piled up brake band which are NLA, and rare /expensive used. Older than I am, not sure by how much.

My brother (who has a similar hobby as @nixon ) found this guy, put a carb kit in it and new fuel line, and sold it to me for too cheap. Almost unused condition.

@landphil both of those are nice saws . That 61 looks mint ! I’ll keep an eye out for a brake band for your saw . Sometimes guys are parting out saws ,or will swap parts , just for shipping cost .

Winter kills chainsaw usage here . But , I was thinking about re-ringing my 372xp . So, I have torn into it today . I have been also thinking about a chainsaw work vice . I’d pretty much decided to have one made . They are hard to come by ,and not inexpensive. ($350)
There was a drawing for one on one of the forums , so just for grins ,I entered my name . It was a shock to find out I’d won it !

I googled chainsaw vise, but all that came up were stump vises. Do you know where can I look for one, see the price, and not buy it?
