This is the same process for the 2nd gen and 3rd Gens. Crew cab might be different from Double, not positive. This mod was completed on my 2012 Rock Warrior Crew Max.

    Parts needed:
    Tools needed:
    • Plastic pry bar
    • Wire cutters
    • Crimping tool
    • Dremel with sanding bit (only needed if you need to widen the hole)

This install is way easier than I made it out to be. Let's just say I uninstalled the entire console to find out that all I had to do was pop off the back panel that the CIG lighter is on. Well here is the process to get that back panel off, remove the CIG lighter and install the replacement USB.

Start by prying up and out on the back panel that the cig lighter is on. Use a plastic tool to not damage anything. Screwdriver can be used but be careful. There are a total of 6 clips. Just pry and pull hard.
    IMG_1771.jpg

Once removed unplug the CIG outlet
    IMG_1772.jpg

Use a pointy tool to push in one of the plastic clips inside the CIG lighter
    IMG_1774.jpg

Oops I got the wrong size. It won't fit in the hole.
    IMG_1777.jpg

I made the decision to make a hard conversion to the USB without the need to go back. This allowed me to do some modifications to the existing plastic without regrets. I used a dremel with a sanding bit to open up the hole..
    IMG_1778.jpg

The widening of the hole paid off.
    IMG_1779.jpg

Tighten down the nut on the back side of the USB outlet to secure in place. Make sure the face is level.
    IMG_1782.jpg

Next cut off the cig outlet plug and crimp on the female wire connectors. Then plug them into the back side of the outlet and your good to go. Red is positive and white with black stripe is negative.

Nice job. Install looks good. This is a great idea for the kids to charge their phone/tablets while on trips. I wouldn't have even thought of it.
I think I'll go the lazy route though, and do something like this instead. :D

I used the one with the orange LED, and replaced the lower left cig lighter in the dash. Love these things. $6, cant beat it.

How much room is in there? Can we add a DC inverter?

bump. that's what I was thinking. depending on the inverter you might have cooling issues though.

i would say no to the inverter. there's room for a small one but they present other issues. your charging requirements could be done without one. if you really need DC current, i would suggest using a blue sea DC outlet or just use the lighter socket.

there is plenty of room in there to add additional USB/DC sockets.

Thanks for the write up. Installed one in the rear and inside the console today. Will probably go back and do one of the fronts.

I did this mod but keeping the cigarette lighter plug just in case I need it. Both plugs wired directly to the battery so they are always on.

Did you have to replace the plate in the back? I just did this mod to USB and the hole was in the middle, thus not allowing me to center two of them.

I put a new thin metal plate on the top of existing plate and drill two holes.

Did something similar. I Might add another dual usb to even out the look but will wire that one to the battery direct for charging when truck is off. Even though I'd never see the need to charge so many devices, I prefer the symmetrical look I think. I had to keep a regular 12v outlet for my daughters booster seat warmer or her dvd player. The dual usb will be good for most anything else. I used a dremel to open the round hole like Brian did, and a razor/file for the rectangle hole. Tapped into the factory 12v wires.

Also added a dual usb quick charge w/ volt meter up front. Got a dual usb adapter for the 12v in console, plugged wireless console lid charger in to one spot and decided to place me audio usb extention cable/plug inside the console to connect phone for android auto function. All very easy and cheap mods.

Wife got pissed I was making so much noise using the dremel in the house but I have now added the dual USB to my 2019. I changed the verbiage at the top to state that this works for both 2nd and 3rd gen.

I followed your link and bought the same plug you posted and followed your instructions here. Really gotta say this is an AWESOME modification. And super simple.

I don't do electronics, so I am a little nervous that the light seems to stay on the plug. Not sure if this'll drain my battery or not. I hope not. But again, I don't do electronics.

    Thanks for this post though!!!!

I bought this a while back and just found the little box. Reminded me that I needed to do it so I decided hot day, sun beaming down, black truck, might as well. It was a little hot but got the job done.
Thanks for the tip on the Dremel. That worked amazing!

I just installed this same USB plug to replace the 12v in the rear center console in my '10 CM. Have you had any issues with he voltmeter draining the battery while the truck isn't running? I also replaced the cigarette lighter with the same USB plug in the front. Replacing the USB/AUX with a dual port USB that has one port dedicated to the radio and the other dedicated to charging, I now have 6 USB ports in my Tundra. :)

Who can confirm that in the factory configuration the rear plug is acc\on only. Not always on.

Yeah, my sons 08 all of them are hot with ignition off. But he claims there’s a timer and they’ll turn off after “6 hours”. Not sure how accurate that is but…

Only my rear is hot all the time. The driver side front is hot only with key on. Passenger side times out after maybe 30 mins? Weird

Yeah, he only showed me passenger and rear. They were hot with keys out. 30 min makes more sense than 6 hours like he said.
