Headunits that talk to OBD port recommendations

Hi,
My plan is to replace the stock non jbl (no nav) head unit in my 2008 DC. Yes it has taken me 12 years to get around to upgrading.

I have two criteria...

1. Headunit needs to talk to the OBD port so that I can access some of the data. When I am cruising Crutchfield or similar sites how do I tell if a head unit has this capability? I have an iPhone so I assume I will need a third party app to view the info. What are your recommendations for an app and OBD connector? I am not needing this data for anything other than curiosity. Reading threads on the towing forum made curious about the engine data. I never knew there were so many sensors I could access driving down the road. So now I am curious.

2. I plan to upgrade speakers in the near future using Tech12Volts. Does it matter which head unit I get now? I don't want to buy 2 head units within a year of each other. Can't buy speakers and head unit all at once. And I have the launch codes from the Admirals for the head unit. I think she is sick of changing CDs.

I think what you are looking for would be the Idatalink Maestro RR or RR2 along with their vehicles specific harness the TO2 i think. The harness come with obd2 plug.
Any radio like kenwood that will accept the Idatalink cable will display obd2 info.

Check out Idatalink Maestro website. Put in your vehicle's info and they will recommend the correct harness.

Any one of the newer kenwood seem to work well to display obd2 info.

 

I am currently running a Kenwood H/U with the iDatalink Maestro RR. It's a pretty cool doohicky. But, to be honest, the coolest thing about it was the iDatalink TO2 harness. Made the whole damned install a breeze!

 

Same set up here... love it and install was a breeze with the Crutchfield harnesses. Give Crutchfield a call, they’ll walk you through what you need.

 

If the head unit can mirror your phone you can download a app called torque and get a bluetooth obd plugin for android or wifi version if you have apple it's the obd android version is this one
