I've been told that all of those NVHDA dog breeds were used for varmint control as well originally. Most of the GSPs I've been around seem to classify cats in the varmint category.

My buddy's GSP cleaned out all of his barn cats in a single weekend when he finally got old enough the catch them.

I am into Dove, Duck, Goose and Turkey. My Boykin Tilley is my companion for all Bird hunting besides Turkey hunting. As to who ask what we shoot. I shot a Beretta 682 gold Onyx for upland, Beretta Xtrema 2 for ducks and a Modified 870 for turkey.

My Boykin loves doves and ducks, but she is a beast on Pheasant :muscleflexing:

Got back from ND about two weeks ago. Spent about 10 days chasing Geese, ducks, cranes in the am and hammering roosters in the afternoon. Pheasant numbers are up this year and it didn't take us long to get limits. I had two Labs and a Boykin with me and they had a ball with pheasant numbers being up. If you're on FB, you can check out some of our past hunts in NC, ND, and KS on this link:

Any recommendations on what to use for squirrels? I've got a bad squirrel problem and I'd like to use something without needing to get too close.

I have a couple of .22's but no scope on either. I'm wondering how close I need to get if I used birdshot .22 rounds? I'm not too steady because how my hands shake.

Pretty close. Birdshot .22 rounds are primarily designed for snakes and unless you get pretty close on a squirrel, you'll likely cripple instead of kill

That's what I was thinking. I can't get close enough to those varmints. Even when I get them up a tree, they go round and round up the tree and I never get a clean shot. I guess birds are easier any way you go.

Those birdshot .22 rounds are really only good for 5 yards on anything bigger than a mouse, give or take a bit. When I was a kid, my cousins and I would use them to shoot rats and mice in and around grain bins. If we hit a rat from much more than 5 yards, we'd have to go follow up to finish the kill. Depending on your eyes, you should be able to make hits on squirrels out to 25 yards or more with iron sights. If you had diffculty with shakey hands, a rest will do you more good than a scope. Either a bipod, or leaning against a tree or other natural rest. Shooting sticks would be another good option.

We would use a single shot .22 bolt action with iron sights to drop squirrels. If noise was a consideration, we'd use CCI sub sonic ammo. Not much louder than a pellet gun but more killing power.

I bought a Ruger branded Umarex air rifle last year. That was as loud as my .22LR rounds. Too loud since there are kids next door just a few hundred feet away. I returned it the next day. Even with my .22 I'm especially careful in what direction I shoot.

Pheasant season starts soon. I figured I would head out one more time to educate some blue grouse, **reminder to self**, don't ever go out on opening day of the third gun season here in CO. The woods were loaded with hunters and most weren't happy to see a guy and two dogs pushing through. I suspect they think we ran off all of the big game? I would also add from my own experiences, most of the big game sleeps all day this time of year and moves at night to hide from the gun hunters. I would like to believe we move them into range for these folks ;).

It was hot, finished early sans birds, and I let the pups (Joy - black lab, Roc, golden) cool off a bit before heading home. There was a murder of crows nearby which vexxed them for some time. [IMG]

I'm an avid waterfowler on the Texas coast. I have a few nice rifles but like my beretta 12s best, have an a400extreem for ducks and a 690 grade III over under for dove and clays.
