I've been dealing with this code for about a year now. I clear it every time it comes on. I haven't had any issues with my motor or passing SMOG.
Well, it came back a few weeks ago and I figure what the heck, lets see what my mechanic says about this code. He says parts alone for this job are going to be $1300 with labor being $500 :eek2:. He's a Toyota/Lexus specialist and he only uses Toyota parts. I've been going to this guy for years for major projects. He did say, if I don't have any issues, not to worry about it

I see that Hewitt Tech has a bypass kit that is SMOG friendly. Anyone here have experience with this particular model below?

They will fail again, just do the bypass and be done

yeah, $400 buck vs $1800 sounds a lot better but I would like to know if anyone else here has installed the bypass. I need to tap into the ECM and I don't feel all that confident playing with that. I need to do more research on that.

This is probably the answer to your question:

    Brand: maXpeedingrods
    Country/Region of Manufacture: N/A
Usually when vendors won't list the country of origin, it's because it's made in a sweathouse workshop somewhere in Asia. If they're offering less than 1-2yr warranty or not listing the warranty at all, assume it will be failing sooner than later. This one lists it, but look at the page: Do you see any indication there'll be anyone to warranty with if it lasts less than 2 years? Yeah, I wouldn't trust it.

tl;dr - Be ready to tear things down and replace it again in less than 12-18 months. This isn't the rule, it's just common enough to be aware.

I have the Hewitt plug and play bypass and the proxy pack on my 2006. It’s been working great so far.

Will the bypass get rid of the check engine light or does it stay on?

You would have to clear the code, but no it shouldn’t ever come back. The system tricks the computer to think its above the temp that it needs to be ran at. If the computer never sees the need to run it, it won’t have the possibility to to come up as stuck or failed system code

Did you have to take the intake manifold off? Hewitt told me that I need to take it off in order to install the plug n play.

Nope, I did not touch the intake manifold. Check out this video showing and explaining the bypass and installation. Very helpful video.

Yes, it does get rid of certain CEL’s, but I also installed the proxy pack to get rid of an additional code got that kept coming up. Everything’s been working well since February.

It’s just very frustrating that the stupid pump was installed under the intake manifold. It should of been off to the side, like around the air box and power steering reservoir.

It’s funny, I wouldn’t recommend anyone move to AZ, not because it’s terrible but the complete opposite. It’s completely awesome and I don’t want to share!

I happen to have my masters and my (not MINE mine) company is looking for help. Pay wont compare to CA pay, but you can also get a 2500 sq ft home on an acre for around $200k here.

I used the Rutech kit. Its a little cheaper. I cleared the codes first then installed the bypass kit and block off plates. No codes since. :D

Secondary Air Injection System Bypass Kits
I think you may be confusing our versions of the bypass kits. Our Gen-I kits (V36H and V54H) are 100% plug and play. The Gen-II-3V kit for the 4.7L requires three wires to be soldered into the ECM wiring behind the glovebox since those three connections are only also accessible under the intake. o make a Gen-II kit 100% plug and play you would have to remove the intake manifold but there is still no reason to remove it for any of our solutions.

Secondary Air Injection System Bypass Kits
First I have to say again that we sell our kits for off-road or emissions exempt use only and that it is illegal to bypass or otherwise make inoperable an emissions system required for on highway use.
Having said that, what you do with it is up to you and the short answer is Yes. As long as you don't have any other issues and drive it enough after reset that all the emissions monitors will show as complete/ready it is not a problem.
The Gen-II kit is a much more friendly solution for getting an emissions exempt vehicle to pass smog if it had to. When installed, it looks like a factory part and there are no visual connections to the MAF, ECT or the starter relay to draw attn to it like the GenI kits. Also the Gen-II will actually let the emissions monitor for the system show as complete/ready while the Gen-I kit will just show as not ready/incomplete. Both can pass but it is much easier to not raise any eyebrows with the Gen-II kit.
