Rear end went out.... ugh

    So. I've had an issue with the rear for a while now. When slowing down hard on the brakes, after I let off and push the gas back down, the rear end would thump. Like a loud clunk. But then would be fine after. So I have always braked easy and it hasn't occured.
    This morning I had two deer run out in front of me and had to get on the brakes hard. The truck revved high and sounded like it was in neutral, then kinda slammed into gear it seemed. But left me sitting still. I put it in 4x4 and creeped the 2 miles a had to get it home at about .000001 MPH. Lol.
    While in 4x4, the rear end made a steady thumping sound, and if I pushed the gas it got louder and harder. The U joints are fine, and the rear end has no leakage... I'm assuming the ring and pinion gears are gone. Anyone else had a reare end issue similar???

    Strange that it would do that after braking heard. Rear diff shouldn't be affected by braking.

    Puzzling. Back In the day, with my Gen1, I had the front dif spider gears completely shred...and I mean completely. Had ZERO indication that anything was wrong, except that my mikes per tank went up almost 30-40 miles!! No sounds. No binding.

    Also, no 4wd.

    Took to dealer and they drained the front dif, only to discover chunks of metal falling out with the oil. After that, and also discovering the extended warranty explicitly did not cover the spider gears, the front end would bind up. A week later i installed a junkyard front end built up with a Powertrax locker. Put a locker in the rear too. Ended up going almost 100k before I sold the old girl...no issues.

    I would get that thing on a lift, drain the dif and borescope to see if there are any issues. On a side note, tearing apart a rear end on the Gen 1 was easy as pie. Rear axles pull out easy and the third member dif unit pulls out nice and easy.

    Also, you may want to check the rear driveshaft. When's the last time you greased it up? Is it leaking? Pumping some grease into the shaft splines may reduced some "noise"

    The drives shaft and rear end were as solid as could be. Never ever had a leak or any problems what soever. This truck (not bragging) was in tip top shape. Gonna just go ahead and replace the whole rear end I believe. I've had two different mechanics (one is a certified toyota tech) come look at it today and both said the same. Rear is gone.
