For anyone that has upgraded their entune non JBL to an aftermarket HU, were you able to use the factory xm satellite connection or did you have to buy a whole new tuner?

I just ordered a new head unit from tech12volts and received it today. It came with adapters for the factory nav antenna, factory satellite antenna, factory USB adapter. While the head unit is "SiriusXM Ready"; it just means it has the port on the back to accept the antenna connection. So I had to order the SiriusXM sxv300 receiver on top of it. It’s about $50

You can use the factory antenna, but you will need an xm tuner regardless. The tuner is built into the oem headunit. So removing it requires a tuner with an aftermarket headunit.

The XM tuner is NOT built in to the OEM head unit.

It hangs under it and is easily removable as I did with mine to switch it from one OEM radio to another higher end and newer unit that I bought as an upgrade in my truck.

Now I am not sure that it can be used with any aftermarket radios either but it is sure not built in to the radio as they come from the factory either.
I suspect that you can not easily find the adapters needed to make this work and I also have always found the aftermarket tuner for free or really cheap when I have needed one as long as you pay for three months of service in advance and usually bought at Best Buy.

They are really more after the monthly recurring revenue more than any small money they make selling the hardware and so the tuners are deeply discounted a lot of the time.

In this terrible pic the radio is upside down on my bench and the Sat Tuner is on the top opposite how it will be under the radio when mounted in the truck.
It should be clear that it is a seperate unit and is just hung under and connected to the factory radio.

Ok. Either way, the factory tuner sucks and limits the amount of stations you actually receive. The actual SiriusXM tuner is only $30 and plugs directly into any aftermarket unit. Why would you even bother trying to adapt the “stock one”?

Agreed which is pretty much what I said but I also had the need to reuse the factory tuner in my truck and better clarity about the actual factory setup might help someone else down the road.

Does an existing XM subscription have to be updated if a new tuner is installed or is it tied to something else?

Kinda. As soon as I registered my new headunit; I had to pay a small processing fee

Check the build link in my signature.
When I upgraded my 2008 JBL HU to a 2010 JBL HU (in my prior truck), the tuner was integrated into the HU and not a separate bolt-on part. So it likely depends on the year and specific HU as to whether it is separate or built-in.

You log into your account and transfer the subscription over to the new unit. Yes, they typically charge you a fee to do that. :censored:

You are correct I should have been more specific that the 3rd gen radios have a seperate tuner.

Where would I buy this adapter? And what would it look like. I have aftermarket stereo and just purchased the Sirius tuner but would rather adapt the to factory antenna instead of running an additional one to the roof.

For what it’s worth you can run the new antenna in the dash and it still work. I mounted mine just in front of the center speaker; but still under the grill. Had to make a small notch so everything sat flush.
