Thats bad. Time to carry it back to the dealer for a replacement. See if they will put on a leather wheel from a limited for your trouble.

    Welcome from NY.

Sorry to hear about the steering wheel.

Could it be a chemical reaction from your hand sanitizer? If you are using any during this Covid.

Clorox wipes or similar products will do that. This was a common problem in ambulances when I worked EMS.

wow, that's crazy, by chance do you use Purell or some type of hand sanitizer? I read somewhere that hand sanitizer can cause this.

I’d be willing to bet $100 it’s this. Make sure the alcohol on your hands is bone dry (use the AC vents to speed the process) before touching your steering wheel.

I'm laughing my ass off at some of these responses. Funny stuff guys lol. I don't use hand sanitizer in my truck, but I do have wipes that I use to wipe my phone and stuff down with every time I leave the gym. And now that I think about it, it's my left hand that I hold the wipe in. Think that would really be it? Seems crazy after such a short period of time. Never happened in my 2010 Tacoma, but I think that may have had a leather wheel.

To the original poster, was this covered by warranty? My 2021 SR5 is doing the same thing at only 4500 miles. Oddly, the spot where it delaminated is at about 4 o'clock--probably the least touched part of the steering wheel.

Well, at least the mice are eating your steering wheel slowly instead of your wiring. I'd call that a WIN!

    Not sure at this point.
Geez, how did it even get that bad? That usually only appears on 20+ year old vehicles...

My 2018 has not a sign of wear on the steering wheel. Either you’re death gripping it or you’re using way to much hand sanitizer and not letting it fully evaporate before grabbing the wheel. The alcohol will eat the material in no time.

I'm just curious if it's covered by warranty. Steering wheel replacement costs are outrageously expensive even if you do the work yourself.

Do you not put covers on when you buy vehicles? One of my first things to do is seat covers, dash mat, floor mats, steering wheel cover, door sill guards, sun shade, cargo mat, screen protector, etc.

    None....
This has happened in a bunch of vehicles I have drove. I think its more the oils from my skin. I know I never used hand sanitizer so that was not my cause. It happened to hundreds of f150 at my last company some of the trucks would be worn down to the metal.A prius I owned. And a few other personal vehicles blazer and s10 . If it doesn't come with a leather wheel this always happens. I just bought a wheelskins leather steering wheel cover. I want to put in on my Tundra before the stock plastic wheel gets damaged.

I wish all the manufacturers would do something else besides the plastic that wears out before 100k

FWIW, I took it to the dealership today, and they will cover it under warranty. The service guy was surprised--he said he'd never seen that on something so new. They will actually just replace it--not repair it. Mine is just a small spot about the size of your thumb nail. It's fixable on these foam wheels, but I've never done it myself. I researched and found you can create a grain mold with silicone caulk and corn starch using an undamaged spot in your car. Then, just melt the damaged surface with a heat gun and press the grain mold you made. Done. If it's over a larger area, you might have to chemically melt the surface with acetone and go over it with scuff pad before applying heat and the grain mold.

However, I've already got a leather wrap ordered that I'll put on over it after they replace it. I actually found one that is unique to the Tundra/Sequoia/Tacoma steering wheel and will cover the spokes and look like it came from the factory. It's not one of those generic Wheel Skins that only covers the wheel part you hold with your hands.

Previously, I had a Nissan Titan that had an actual leather steering wheel cover from the factory. It gradually disintegrated over several years. I never could find a steering wheel cover for it, though. Looked awful. I agree with another poster--I think some of us just have oil in our hands that destroys stuff. Some don't and never have any issue. I guess it's just luck of the draw.

Either stop slathering alcohol based hand cleaners on or get a steering wheel cover.
