Transmission fluid exhange

    Stock. No tow package, 4:10 gears
    My truck has 114k miles and I want to change the transmission oil. My question is should I do so after installing a transmission oil cooler or would it be wasteful doing one before adding the oil cooler?

    The dealer I'm going to tomorrow said they can do it for $186 before tax with some coupon and that it should be around 4-5 quarts.

    Sounds like a drain and fill which is almost as easy as changing the oil. To answer your first question, I don't think it really matters, but I'd do it before so only clean fluid is going into the new trans cooler.

    Have the dealer furnish & install, or at least install the T cooler when the perform the drain and fill. The lines to and from the cooler are added capacity, let the dealer add whatever amount of extra ATF is needed while they have it. Discus your options with the dealer before you set the appointment.

    There's a lot of hysteria about transmission auxiliary coolers right now. The only reason for you to add an auxiliary transmission fluid cooler is if you are towing heavy, i.e. big travel trailer close to your tow limit weight with lots of frontal area.

    Toyota parts listings seems to show your 2008 having the same transmission warmer and spacer as later years, so that means you could replace the spacer with a thermostat to install an auxiliary cooler. I would recommend using all Toyota parts in a retrofit except the auxiliary cooler...I would buy a good value aftermarket exchanger with about 30K BTU capacity.

    If you're going to install an auxiliary cooler, the time to do a full fluid replacement would be after the cooler installation is complete. Follow the video below. Install the new thermostat with the old warmer, pipes, hoses, and an aftermarket auxiliary cooler, then do the fluid exchange. The trick is never running the transmission fluid out of fluid, so it has to be done carefully in like 2 quart steps. Since the cooler and new lines are empty, you'll have to start with the transmission overfilled a quart or two, or you can catch the drainage before it gets to the cooler. Personally, I wouldn't worry about running dirty fluid through your new auxiliary cooler system; the signal for complete fluid exchange will be fresh red fluid that has flushed the cooler system clean.

    I estimate the auxiliary cooler installation and the fluid exchange would be about 3-4 wrenches out of five. Be sure of your capabilities before you start a DIY.

    I held off with the transmission fluid exhange and just did an oil change at the dealer. I will probably drain the pan in the foreseeable future to see how it looks while I get all the parts necessary to add a cooler.

    It looks like I have a transmission cooler and would need the thermostat and everything else.

    I dont really tow anything now, but I like the extra security of having it and hopefully allowing the transmission to last longer

    If you do add an auxiliary cooler in the future, be advised that diagram is incorrect for your 5.7L with the AB60 transmission. That diagram is for another transmission (A750?) with a different thermostat and warmer. Just be sure your parts guy knows your engine/transmission, and what you're trying to accomplish.

    That's a good catch @JohnLakeman I dont know why I would get links like that from google when I typed in "tundra 5.7 transmission thermostat" I'll keep looking for the 5.7 related info. Ive tried searching here and I only come across threads relating to adding a cooler to the 4.6

    There's several threads about adding auxiliary coolers to 5.7L, but they're all for 2019+. That really doesn't make any difference for earlier model 5.7L Tundras without the auxiliary cooler; the engine is the same and the transmission is the same. Try searching on "transmission cooler", "transmission temperature", etc.

    Just use all Toyota parts from transmission to front of engine, then use bulk transmission fluid hose and aftermarket cooler to finish the system.

    This equivalent diagram for the 5.7L was posted by @Roman on January 24, 2019. You don't really need the warmer and hoses (existing), or any of the hoses beyond the cooler pipe assembly (32907A). Confirm all part numbers with @Roman:
