Greetings y'all. I have an old, but not so tired '07 trd supercharged Crewmax. Recently started puffing smoke at startup, then quickly progressed through all the bad valve guide seal symptoms (smoking after deceleration, clearing up under acceleration etc.)

I pulled the plugs & valve covers, and discovered the spark plug tube seals were beyond bad. Rock hard and brittle. IMG_20200911_203310.jpg After replacing those, I found that I still had an oil burning issue. So I have decided to change the valve stem seals.

My question to you guys is, what other rubber should I be replacing while I've got the timing chain off? I'd like to stick to a fairly frugal budget. Timing chain is the original, but seems to be in pretty good of shape.

Sorry can’t help but I am definitely interested in your situation, how many miles has it been super charged?

It has been supercharged since quite early in its life. ~20k miles is when the TRD kit was installed. So far, the list of parts I'm gonna service while I'm down I'm there includes: Timing chain, timing chain guides, timing chain tensioners, water pump, serpentine belt, and valve stem seals.

Good luck with your repairs... is there a link that details your functional hood scoop?

It's a fully functional fiberglass ram air hood. Ive considered cutting some vents in it to help with heat dissipation, but I just love the way it looks currently.

I think it was at like 258k before I disconnected the battery. Original unopened motor and transmission.
And supercharger. It's a pretty remarkable vehicle.

Considering a slight change of plans. Tempted to pull the motor out.

Is that the coolant reservoir that's routed to the front? Any specific reason that was done? It should be mounted to the supercharger on the drivers side with a bracket.

It mounts there on trucks with the tow package I believe.

So after pulling the radiator and fan, I'm encouraged by all this new space I have now. Still tempted to pull the motor, but I'd really rather hold off on that until it's time for the performance build. I'd like to see how long I can keep this stock original drivetrain on the road. For those of you who care, this truck has been driven some long, hot miles. Religious, high quality oil changes, but it has been driven like a supercharged tundra should be.

Sorry guys, got busy with life and had to step away from the truck project. I've recently resumed, and got really really tired of trying to work on the motor in the truck. So I pulled the motorIMG_20201017_082736.jpg

Today I will be pulling the cylinder heads, to see how much of a rebuild I need to do. I strongly suspect that the bottom end needs nothing, and my valve stem seals are what the issue is. But while I have the motor out, I gotta spend a little bit to make sure my cylinders/rings are in good shape.

I didn't take the best pictures of the cylinders, but it is absolutely remarkable how little wear there is. Almost no wear ridge on the cylinder walls, factory crosshatching visible in all 8 cylinders. I'll take a better picture tomorrow. The cylinder that was burning oil is clearly visible from the carbon deposits on the intake and exhaust valves. (cylinder 7)
