With all of 26 miles on my brand new truck I threw a CEL. I pulled the negative terminal off of the battery to reset because obviously this can’t be right. Came right back at 150 miles.

Dealership asked me to check gas cap and that wasn’t it.
Took it in and I was throwing several codes (see pic).

They’re telling me it’s a ‘carbon canister’ that needs to be replaced, it’s an emissions issue.

Seems like an awful lot of codes for an emissions problem.

Taking it in today to get that replaced but overall no good explanation for what these codes actually represent. Will update later.

So far pretty irritated by Toyota reliability and quality.

No I drove it on a mini road trip this weekend and it operates normal.

Cruise control doesn’t work either and when I remote start the truck through the app it turns on and then immediately turns off.

    Very odd.

Thousands of components make up a vehicle, sorry to hear one didn’t work out of the box. Toyota will make it right!

Mine needed a whole new rear axle assembly after 150 miles.....I was irritated too. But Toyota fixes and made it right. Give them a chance and I am sure it will be fine

That’s fine but I’m not in the business of taking a brand new car to the dealership twice to get a brand new car fixed. And what is next?

The truck does a self test of the evap system. If it fails the CEL comes on. The remote start not working is a safety designed into the truck if the CEL is on. Same with the cruise control. It's an easy fix and the dealership will take care of it. As complex as vehicle have gotten expect some glitches from every manufacture but expect less from Toyota. If you have loss confidence with Toyota try a Ford, Chev or Dodge.

When you filled it up for the first time, did you fill it until it clicked and then took out the nozzle or did you click it more to "top it off"? From my understanding, the carbon canister absorbs gasoline fumes and can be destroyed by overfilling the tank.

So the progressive of worst to worse is FCA, Ford then GM?

Well, if GM is as bad as our experience has been - God bless those who deal and put up with worse.

I was waiting for the ‘if you think this is bad, try the others’ which is one of the reasons I went with Toyota. I did look at the Sierra because I get a discount with GM as my company is a supplier. When I told the salesperson at GMC I wanted the Tundra because the deal was better she told me “people go with Toyota for the price. They pick GMC because of the quality.” I lol’d and never responded, but obviously cheesy tactic to get me to reconsider.

Understand that the vehicles of today are extremely complex, the point of my post was more to get advise from others to determine if this was a common issue, and to add to the CEL archive in case others experience in the future.

Canister replaced, cruise works, auto start works.

Good to know. I’m traditionally a ‘full that b*tch until it’s full full, like 10 clicks and bubbling out full’. I’ll stop at the first click moving forward.

But I received the truck full and hadn’t filled it yet when the lights had come on both times.

It’s warrantied, and still would keep going with that code. Shit happens. Be glad it came up now and will be corrected. I get the frustration, but every make and model will have an issue. What’s important is it’s corrected and move on.

From everything I've read and heard, GM and Ford seem to be similar in quality. Seems like they were both (relatively) decent until the 90s then Ford got really lousy then GM didn't get lousy until the last ~10-15 years.

Not an exact example of it, but this is know as "infant mortality", it's okay. Essentially all newly manufactured items run a small risk of near immediate failure. A good company with a solid QA will do its best to prevent this, but it is unavoidable.

Codes seem to be pretty straight forward if you're familiar with the vacuum and LDP system. Basically I bet the charcoal can. is leaking and not allowing the LDP to complete sealing in time to prevent the code from being thrown. It that is the issue, its a simple fix and will probably not come back. No need to worry or write the truck off yet.

I mean, GMC isn't Yugo, but come on. I'd have said "I bet you're right...let's go look up the statistics right now."

No, it's not, kinda. Each truck has their bugbears. For the F150's it used to be the 2011-2012 misshapen cylinders on the Ecoboosts/5.0s; they were semi-OK until 2015 or so and then introduced some new recalls, and then the 5.0 started to have serious issues in 2018, I believe, when they (I think) got rid of plasma welded iron sleeves in the cylinders.

I've heard of Toyota owners have evap canister/O2 sensor replacements, yes; but they're not at all a 'common' thing, and I'd sure as hell rather deal with that than the stuff I experienced on my F150 or other vehicles.

If it weren't for emissions, we wouldn't need a CEL.

Some of the common stuff we see at the dealership level for the Tundra and this includes all the old high mileage trucks are 1) air injection system failures 2) front timing cover leaks 3) rear main seal plate leakage, only for one year 4) AC evaporator leak starting in 2019 5) timing chain stretch on high mileage non maintained engines 6) box misalignments and loose bolts causing rattles 7) TRD skid plate noise from gravel being trapped 8) rear back up camera failing 9) rear axle seal leaks. Those are the most common problems off the top of my head.

Now the OP has got something to worry about. Sometimes it fun to mess with the mind. :D

    LOL

Well yeah....but the thing is that unless I'm mistaken, none of it is "common" - e.g., definitely going to happen on our trucks. Additionally, I almost GUARANTEE it's worse for other vehicle makers.

The plastic oil pans they put in the 2018+ 5.0s aren't great at actually containing the oil, either.

Kind of like when you work at a hospital. 40-50 year olds come in all the time with heart attacks. Doesn't mean you're going to have one.

Reliability and resale is what built Toyota’s reputation. A CEL for a bad carbon canister is not the end of the world. Shit happens and not every single part they use will be 100% out of the box. Get the canister replaced and enjoy your new truck. It’s nothing I’d be worried about but I do understand your frustration for sure.
