If I read his post correctly, he has an 8 channel amp that has a built in digital sound processor (DSP). The DSP allows you to set custom setting for each individual speaker. That's what is referred to as an "Active" system, or sometimes an "Active Network". This setup does not use the separate crossover the comes with most speaker sets.

The separate crossover (passive crossover) is preconfigured and mostly does not offer any individual tuning. The exception which is more common on higher end speaker sets (component speakers) there are option to select the tweeter decibel levels.

A decent DSP offers the ability to set custom crossover point, crossover slopes, individual speaker equalization, individual speaker volumes... And depending on the DSP a ton more options.

what was involved in installing the 3" mid in the dash corners? Just strapping, or was modifying the dash required?

just tried putting in 3.5” in my dash corners. Didn’t work, but they are also kickers so might be a little deeper than other 3.5s. Some people have had luck. I ordered 2.75s which are supposed to drop right in no problem. Going to put one of the 3.5s in the center and then decide if I want to hook it up or not

Looks like you like Sundown Audio. Do you sell any other brand of speakers?

Yes! I've purchased Kenwood, JL, JBL and Hertz speakers from James....he is a full-service truck audio supplier. Tell him what you want and your budget and he sends you everything...nothing to figure out. So easy!

Understood, though with me part of the joy is figuring it out. I ve been planning a system for several years. It was for a car originally, but a car accident caused me to buy my Tundra, so I m trying to make it all work in the truck. What I really want is set of components. Ive narrowed it down to Rainbow GL-C6.3 (3 ways.)

    OP,
I'm also looking to upgrade my 2019 Platty JBL system so I'm looking for the best options as we all are. I believe I can pull off sourcing the parts and installing myself but I would absolutely prefer to have a shop do it. With being aware of the best technology for the JBL fitted Tundras, I can have have confidence going DIY or having a pro do it. Thanks for posting your solution as we can all benefit from this.

@james@tech12volts -I really appreciate the resources we have with pros like you that share the information. I would be up for doing a build with you if we could work out the timing (2-3 hour distance from you). Feel free to PM me to discuss if you have time in September.

    @
MJoeP - very intriguing post and would like to hear more about your install. The Audison Prima solution is different than any of the other Tundra audio builds that I've found on the internet. Appears that you have some expertise to navigate this from a wider spectrum and not limited to what other people are duplicating for Tundras.

    Thanks to all!

You will need to keep the factory amp and use it for high level speaker outputs. See link in my signature.

I’m running 2 kicker amps kxa series pushing 1600 watts, replaced all my speakers with kickers, 2 10” L7 competition square woofers and my lights dim when the volumes up. Do you have this issue and or how did you correct it? Thinking about buying an optima yellow cap battery but not sure if this will help?

I don’t remember, I’ve not driven it since March. Lol, the Rubicon comes out of the garage and the Tundra goes in. I’ll have to see.

New to the Tundra family, def need a minor upgrade to the bass on the car keeping stock head unit. Any recommendations? How do I know if I have the JBL system? I attached a copy of my spec sheet.

Not sure how to tell if it’s a JBL. When I made the decision to upgrade my sound system I replaced everything and it sounds alooot better.

Look at your radio, does it say JBL anywhere on it? If it does then you have the JBL

Did that also. Ended up putting Kenwood Excelon 2.75" https://www.crutchfield.com/p_113X2C/Kenwood-Excelon-KFC-X2C.html in the corners and the Hertz tweeters from @james@tech12volts in the center. I was concerned it would have too much treble in the front but it balances perfectly!
Just what worked for me man.

I asked because I have no labels or indications on the vehicle that say JBL, sometimes manufacturers just private label it.

Non JBL will not have a sub. If you’re still curious, look behind the rear seat back on the drivers side.
If you really crank the bass, some songs will sound like there’s a sub. When I purchased my truck, the bass was cranked up and it kinda shocked me. But after a complete system, I now know what a “real” system sounds like. And my wife even comments on the clarity and quality of the sound and she hates loud music lol.
