Would you be dissapointed at these BMC welds

    Hello,

Just got a BMC/CMC on my 2019 Double Cab at a local shop here in the Northwest, and wanted to share photos of the work. I paid 275 for the job to be completed, and am honestly a bit disappointed in the quality of the work. Before I react further, I wanted to ask members here from experience if my expectations are out of line? The photos are of the drivers side. The passenger side is about the same. Thoughts?

    Garbage.

I could do better than that with a harbor freight flux welder, with my eyes closed.

Sorry to be so harsh, but I would take that to someone else and let the current shop pay for the repair.

    Was the welder even sober?

Feel free to share my post with the guy doing the welds.
Tell him he’s free to reach out and prove me wrong.

Looks like fluxcore, that how it should look and it looks fully functional. Did you pay to have them finish it out or just weld them in place ?

    That’s crappy fluxcore.

You can make a good, clean, strong weld with fluxcore.
Many people have been mislead on this.

    Clean fluxcore:

    F17F724C-6307-4218-9F78-62973D7692CB.jpg 3D2B205D-FC09-42C5-84BA-42F14E868D3E.jpg 6C98E938-E9F6-4470-AE48-6149E6C1091E.jpg

Even in a difficult overhead position:

    A70AF2DE-ACEB-4E1F-A96A-06F5737CEC48.jpg

And you can double up and make a second pass on fluxcore.

I paid for a "BMC", but did not specify exactly what I wanted. I more assumed that it would be better looking and blended.

Also, the bottom seam doesn't appear to have full penetration or coverage. Aside just my cosmetic disapproval, that's a big deal IMO.

I am glad to know there is consensus around my observation, thank you all for input.

Second question, anyone know of a place that would know how to fix this in the Portland OR area?

Thats why I asked. The welds look cold but functional, take it back and have them fix the bottoms. Had they ground all of it and hit it with a coat of paint most people wouldn't have looked twice at it. Rule #1, never give customers anything to look at.

Jman welder here. Those are absolute garbage welds. I've seen better welds from 1st year apprentices. Will they hold? Probably. Would I ever put my name on those? Not a chance.

Bottom seam is not penetrated and I doubt you have good fusion on any of the the welds.

Where did you go in Portland? I have an appointment with a shop that was supposed to do a Tundra today. Hope it’s not the same one. Was it in Gresham?

Edit: depending where you went I know of 1 or 2 shops you could check out.

I haven’t been certified since 1998, but I’ve seen better welds on first timers.
Much less a 1st year apprentice.

I could have a guy do a better weld than that with stick, on dirty red iron, vertically in one week or less.

I went to Gresham 4 wheel drive and off road. Not trying to throw dirt on any company, I haven't even contacted them yet on this. I plan on reaching out to them tomorrow to see how they can help me resolve this.

    You’re not throwing dirt.

They should be embarrassed and eager to make it right.

Oh thank god! You were close. Call Houston at Superior OffRoad.

Wunderlust in Oregon city. Haven’t used them but they just quoted me 3x’s what Superior wants. They are either high as can be or do the best bmc on the planet.

Depending if the current shop owner has a better way of fixing this, I think I'll try superior next. I just hesitate to trust that a second attempt would deliver better results with how far off the mark this was. Regardless, I want to have a discussion about it and see how it gets handled.

No apology necessary! I share the same concern. It's my first truck, first new car, and first time I've had a vehicle that I really enjoy so I'm obviously concerned with anything that makes it look bad.

I mean they could've atleast covered up some of that craftsmanship with a grinder

And also where they cut it on the outside seems like they didn't know what they were doing; doesn't look like you gained very much with this either :notsure:

If they don’t fix it you could just run it over and have Superior look at it. See what they say to. My quote was for the wife’s 4Runner but it’s still less then what Gresham charged.
Good luck with having it fixed.
