I have a Japan built 4.7 V-8 in my 2002 Tundra. At 268.000 miles on the clock, the little V-8 runs like a Swiss watch. Other than timing belt and water pump changes every 75,000 miles (Toyota recommends every 90,000), there have been no maintenance issues other than normal recommended maintenance. I replaced the transmission with a Toyota rebuilt unit at 255,000 miles and the little truck is a joy to drive.

How do you confirm the engine was built in Japan?

Find the serial number on the engine and match it to the build location. I did this with my transmission 2 years ago and assumed the engine was built in Japan, as well. No links to help you, but you should be able to figure it out.

I just went through some old pics and notes. The 03 has 5 less HP compared to the 00-02.

So, its 240 vs 245hp. I believe the reduction was due to the newer Catalytic Converter (3 way) implemented that year on the 03. Other differences are in the electrical system. The 03 has a larger Alternator and more fuses/different shaped fuse box etc.

If you want exact details, you can plow through the 03 FSM where the differences are documented versus the 02. The ones I stated above are the majors. A minor is the gas emissions charcoal box thingie which was moved.

    Thanks for the info!
Just trying to learn more about our engines and looks like there are minor differences but in the end, very interesting!

    Rex:

I bought my 2002 Tundra Limited new in October, 2001. The dealership told me that the Tundra was assembled in Indiana and that the 4.7 V-8 was made in Japan. I don't think that Toyota was making the 4.7 in the USA at that time. In any case, it has been a wonderful engine and when I pop the hood and look at the engine bay, it is a joy to look at such a well laid out engine and other components.

The forged vs cast argument is a myth. All 4.7s use the same rods.

It's here, some (dis)assembly required to access the full stamp on the block. I can see the "2U Z" part and some numbers under it, but can't see the whole thing.

    Thanks for that info guys!
    I'll check my block out when I start on my supercharger install.20200321_171001.jpg 20200321_171007.jpg 20200321_171030.jpg 20200320_172912.jpg 20200320_172857.jpg

Here is a picture that I just happen to have of my TRD block but it's not that clear.

I'll take more pictures when I go back to my storage and get what it says.

Just to Clarify, This is my TRD block, not the early gen that is in my truck currently.

It does give an idea of where the stamp is located.
