Trading in 4Runner for Sequoia?

My wife and I are considering trading in her 4Runner for a new Sequoia TRD Sport to have a true 3rd row for kids. Who all on here has one and has anyone previously had a 5th gen 4Runner? I am looking for some pros and cons to the trade. From talking to a coupe dealers we would get a pretty good trade on the 4Runner since they are so desirable right now.

 

I’m on my second Sequoia now. Never had a 4Runner, but I can say the Sequoia is an outstanding vehicle.

Have a 4runner, great vehicle. The only downside is the amount of room. A sequoia has a ton! and is a more comfortable vehicle especially on trips. But they also get about 3-4 MPG less if that is a consideration for you.

I looked at sequoia before I purchased my Tundra and may have purchased one but they were running 5-10k more than Tundras with same year/mileage buying used. They are cool vehicles and do many things well.

Pros- more room and comfort. Powerful. Can tow and haul more than a 4runner. They drive smaller than they are which is nice.

Cons- they are not cheap. Poor gas mileage. If you mod your vehicles, there is less support/products compared to 4runner. Handling is a little squishy and they squat pretty good when loaded or towing.

Dealers are offering top dollar on trades, typically more than KBB in my area. If they are willing to give a nice trade and come down to a reasonable purchase price I think that you would be happy.

 

We had a Sequoia Platinum that was my wife's daily driver, and the one we used for trips. It's our all time favorite SUV. Only reason she got rid of it was she wanted something smaller for the parking garage at the hospital. There were really no downsides for us. IMO, if you can afford a $65k SUV, then the fuel economy and gas cost will not matter to you.

 

Dealers don’t move many Sequoias either, so I’ve found that they are a lot more willing to negotiate on them than they are on a Tundra. I think we got our last one for nearly 10k off the sticker.

 

Had an '08 Sequoia, ditched at 240K miles because it cost more than it was worth to repair. Great vehicle, had the 3rd row for Lab more than kids BUT could legit fit 2 more kids back there unlike smaller SUVs. Way more comfortable and powerful than a 4Runner -- I own a 5th gen. I will probably own a Sequoia again if Toyota updates it to be as good as/better than the Tundra (maybe they have?) and it's not $70K. So a con for Sequoia for me (including the later-model used ones) were: tech was behind, a little bit frumpy look (grille and rear), so cost too much for what it was vs a Tundra. Hope that helps....

 

Thanks for the opinions. That's good to hear it feels smaller driving it than it is. When I drive the 4runner after driving my truck I feel like I am in a go cart so I am sure it will be a big change for my wife to go to a bigger vehicle. The gas mileage isn't a huge concern for us. My wife works from home and I already daily my Tundra so we're used to it. I want to check one out in person but they are hard to find on lots in my area. Anyone have pictures of the interior space? How's the ride? My wife complains that my truck rides like, well a truck haha.

 

We have a Sequoia also. The backseat has tons of space like my Tundra crewmax. Lots of cargo space with 3rd row folded down also. I think the Sequoia has a pretty good ride. (maybe slightly better than my Tundra). But that's hard to compare for me because mine is not stock. I put a small lift and some Toyo RT tires (So that may have compromised ride a little) But either way, No complaints

 

Interior is as spacious as the Tundra, rides better/softer than a Tundra BUT we had the Platinum, not sure if the other trims ride differently.

 

We have a first gen. GREAT vehicle!!!! It’s mostly back to stock now that my wife is driving it again.... the 4.7 is great and running strong with around 220k miles.

 

We have a 2019 TRD Sport, NOT PRO, and we love it. Tons of space, rides nice, and did I mention tons of space. We got the captains chairs in the back seat and it was the main selling point for us. So there is a pass through to the trunk and third row. We came from a Highlander and regret nothing!

 

Sequoia is more comfortable than both Tundra and 4Runner. Having IRS and optional air springs makes a big difference.

Pros: Short wheel base that is comparable to 4Runner parking and turning radius.
Interior huge. You can fit 7 to 8 adults even in the third row.
Plenty of cargo space after folding the third row seats.
Better ride we quality compared to 4Runner.
Better towing capacity.


Cons: Small gas tank.
Poor mpg.

 

Well we went and checked out a 2020. TRD sport Sequoia. My wife and I were impressed. Tons of space and all the luxury features my wife wants and our 4Runner doesn’t have. Didn’t have time to drive it but we will probably do that in the next couple weeks. It is definitely a nice vehicle.

 

I just recently bought the 2019 TRD sport and love the ride. I had an 06 4Runner, then a 2016 Honda Pilot, but was so unhappy with the pilot I traded it in for the sequoia. The ride is really smooth and better than the tundra I think. The handling and turn radius is surprisingly pretty good for a vehicle its size Oddly enough I was telling my wife that I park better with the sequoia than the pilot.

down side is that gas mileage is terrible. I’m mostly city driving and hit a lot of red lights. I get about 10-11 mpg right now. Head unit is really really old and want to change that out immediately.

 

@drobb Sweet! I was wondering what our '06 would look like with some rad wheels! Your car's twin lives in IL. I don't know if we'll ever own a more reliable rig. It's only 95k miles and only item thus far outside of maintenance and recalls was a stuck caliper. For 4-5 seasons we towed ~5k# camper and it didn't complain and had enough power, had a Hensley hitch, mostly midwest trips but also some more challenging terrain in WV and PA. Our biggest concern was braking and making sure trailer brakes were dialed in well and keeping track of gas stations lol. I've only leveled the front. How did you handle the airbags with the rear lift? They still functional?

 

^Nice Sequoia!!!.....ours is a Limited, but it didn’t come with rear air bags.

 

Just did the exact same OP. Traded in the wife’s 4Runner for a Pro. The 4Runner was an awesome vehicle we just outgrew it too fast, with three kids the sequoia is amazing. Was between a platinum and a pro, oddly with the sequoia (unlike the tundra) the pro still has the majority of the options we like plus was less then the platinum. We figured we could more easily add the features we wanted to the pro (for less cost) then it would to make the platinum look like the pro.

Things we love:
- the space!
-The handling and drive, maybe it’s the Fox/irs combo but this thing feels like it turns and handles better then the 4Runner and by far outdoes the handling on my tundra
- What features it has are nice: all safety features, auto lift gate, power fold mirrors, and so forth

Things we kinda wonder wtf Toyota:
-the interior styling on the pro is comically poor/simple. For the price point especially after looking at Tahoe’s and such the interior, mainly dash design lacks.
-lacks numerous features competition has for the same price point.

On the plus side updating the interior is simple with small things going a long way

I have/am the original owner of a 2001 Sequoia, Limited. It just hit 230k miles and has had ZERO issues.

Although stored indoors religiously, the plastic parts are starting to give up; which is understandable in our harsh sun. The oil changes STILL reveal good as new oil.

We have blown nearly every speaker and I'm afraid to take the doors apart in fear that they won't go back together; so a bluetooth speaker sits on the dash. It has been the BEST vehicle I've owned; reliable and safe. My oldest kid will start driving it soon and I am confident that it will last him through his early driving years, safely.

I will replace it with another Sequoia or the LX, if Lexus makes the back seat wider and gets rid of the 3rd row seat configuration.

Lexus takes the Toyota quality to the next level. I have a 2014 GS350 F-Sport and everything about that car is superior to the Toyota. I don't know why Toyota doesn't at least use the same quality leather, paint and glass.

But, my Sequoia is what made me brand loyal. I love that vehicle!

 

@StarLord what did you pay for your Sequoia Pro and what was the MSRP if you don't mind me asking. Working a deal right now on one.

 

The sequoia is the wife’s car! 2008 limited, and we love it for our big family!

MSRP with addons as listed was 71k for the pro. the platinum on the lot was listed at 75k. I gave a bottom line with trade in. I don’t care how the work the numbers, they met bottom line after walking away for a day. So can’t really account for what we got off.

 

Gotcha, I worked them down to 5k off MSRP which from what I've seen in the pros is really good.

 

Yeah anything down off msrp is good for the pros, careful they will run bs if you finance through Toyota that the pros are looked in at 4.99% or whatever. Walk/finance somewhere else pull quotes. If you got the credit you can definitely drop that much lower.

 

Im already approved through my credit union for 2.49% and told them that. They said, sounds good, we can't touch that. I feel good then. Thanks for the input.

Funny you say that, getting the pro ppf/ ceramic coated next week. Expensive but should be worth it. Looks great!!!

 

I'm in the process of talking the wife into a Sequoia from her Highlander. We have 3 little ones and could use the extra space. Thanks for all who contributed to the thread, I appreciate the info.
