Hi everyone I'm new here and trying to learn a little info on my 19 cm 4x4 platinum. I have read a lot about how the 19's and 20's don't have a true external transmission cooler but I was just curious how many of you pull your trailers in s4/with tow haul, instead of D/with tow haul? From what I understand the torque converter dosen't lock up until 5th and 6th gear. So the clutches are constantly slipping in gears 1-4 creating heat in the transmission. What's your thoughts?

I believe S4 locks up the torque converter and keeps the transmission from hunting for the right gear like when in drive.

manually shift to 5 and 6 in S mode with tow haul and it locks up just fine...played around with this on my last trip to OBX and S mode worked a whole lot better than drive.

You are correct...In the 2 wheel drive tundras it locks up in s4-s6 The 4 wheel drive it locks up in s5-s6 only.

I have a 17' 4 wheel drive and can definitely say it locks up in s4. I tow a trailer all week long in hilly terrain and my truck lives in s4.

S4 and Tow Haul for me. If it's super flat, S5.

Before gears, S4 with tow haul on. With 5.29 gears, I can run S5 with tow haul and downshift to S4 for hills. My RPMs are the same

Empty or lightly loaded 18' utility trailer in D.
Medium to heavily loaded utility trailer in S4.
    Travel trailer in S4.

I never use tow/haul since going to S4.

I have a 19' utility trailer that I hauled a bunch of rocks down to my property with my 07. Pretty heavy. S4....didn't need T/H at all. Didn't even feel the trailer. Had to back off the throttle going up LaVeta Pass here. Long ass grade. 5.7 really was impressive that trip. T/H would have been overkill. Bottom line...once in S4 my tranny was locked. My 07 was a 4X4. My 8 cents.

    LaVeta Pass is 9400 ft....

Super flat I’ll use D. However in 4th gear our engines and 4.30 gears make so much freakin power it will fly up any hills
