Figured I may as well ask this here. I need to buy a pair of black side zip duty boots for my firefighter training course. Steel toe is not required. Right now I'm looking at the 5.11 ATACS 2.0 as well as Magnum boots. I'd love Red Wing or Danner but I'm on a tight budget right now. Honestly, if they last me the course I'll be happy. If/when I get hired, I'll buy some high end boots.

    What do you guys use?

Does it have to have a polish"able" toe? I have not had a bad pair of 5.11s yet. I always buy the TAC or Light weight model of whatever boot I do buy

What are the courses? Are you going to be in turnout gear most of the time or running ems calls?

Nope, it doesn't need a polishable toe at least according to the gear list I've been given.

It'll be the NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2 hands on training, not running actual calls. The boots will be for the class room times and non-turnout gear related training. I'm told there will be timed events for getting out of dept wear and into turnout gear, hence side zips being advised.

I used the Under Armor boots when I was on patrol. They were the most comfortable shoe I found BUT...they wear down pretty fast. I was buying new boots like every 6-8 months.

I was originally leaning towards those as well, but I heard much the same reports about fast wear. Sucks because they're definitely comfortable.

I’ve been partial to Merrell, but the last pair I bough only lasted a couple months.

I use side zip, non steel toe, Magnum and 511. Both are great for my use and I don't really notice a difference in comfort and quality. Edit- I've also used Original S.W.A.T, they all seem the same to me, probably same sweat shop maker.

That said, mine are issued and I don't pay for them. I also have Danner side zip insulated which are also nice. We get points to buy them and are only allowed to buy whatever the supplier has for our unit, so we can't take Merrell or UA, unless our contract says we can.

I have used New Balance and Under Armour runners at work too. The UA seem to be well built, but they don't last (as others have said about the boots).

Rocky makes a good set of boots for decent prices, I've never been a fan of 5.11 but I don't have anything bad to say about them either.

I like Bates. Their side zip duty boots are comfortable, lightweight, inexpensive, and last me for years.

Man, I’ve been in the field for 10yrs now. Don’t know if I’ve found a boot I like. 5.11’s were good to me, but they are cheap Chinese shit. Thorogood makes great stuff, but between my two pairs, neither are comfortable for all day use.

I’m about to buy a pair of ariat sierra’s to be honest.

Yep I was thinking bates or rockys also for those kinds of actions.

Good luck man. Loved when I fought volunteer fire. You’ll get used to those time trials. Remember mask then nomex. Could not tell you how many times I looked back and saw a new guy doing it the other way.

I’m not sure what your course consist of but another consideration is they are super light which made the running suck less in my academy

It sounds like the running in our academy will be done in running shoes, not boots. Thank God. LOL

Thanks for all the info guys. I stumbled on a 20% off sale for the 5.11 boots so I jumped on that. Kinda silly not to. :)

@Outbound - Lowa TF best boots ever. Once you blow out enough 5.11, Rocky's, Bates, Danners (used to be good, not anymore) etc, you'll break down haha

For academy... get a grinder set of something cheap...bates or rocky... once you’re in the job... Warrington or Thorogood. Go with a front zip rather than side. The sides blow out much faster than “lacing” in a zipper on the front.

Noted. The front zip looks much more pratical and durable. The 5.11's served me well enough in academy since we actually spent 95% of our time in turnout gear. If/when I get hired onto a dept, I'll definitely look to upgrade my boots.
