I went under rig to attack pinch weld job and noticed grease slung on both inner CV boots. I assume from angle of new lift. Boots don't appear torn. Probably 500 miles on new lift. Coming from the inside, closest to midline of truck. Supposed to drive the truck 1200 miles sat. Any help or suggestions. Clips failed and the boot slid. Happens after you lift and the cv angles change which increase the range of movement of the joints. Easiest fix is a new hose clamp and some new grease.

Probably have to take off the boot, regrease and reseal it. Or get new cv axles. Does anyone make a diff drop kit for 1st gen? If not the issue could/will happen again.

I lost a fair amount of grease from my lower ball joints after installing 3" lift coilovers. I posted a thread similar to yours and guys told me not to panic, that the joints were just getting used to their new angle. I wiped off the grease a couple times and kept an eye on the joints, and they soon quit losing it. That was about 18 months and 14k miles ago, and everything seems fine now. So, I want to say to not panic. Clean it off, drive it around a bit, keep an eye on it, and see if it continues, or starts to subside.

Just re-strap the boots and you'll be fine. Not enough grease loss to be worried about it.

It's not that much grease. As others have said, it's the lift changing the angles and the components adjusting to the new normal. Keep an eye on them and re-strap if the clamps are gone and you'll be fine.

I would do what @Casper421 said. Pop off the failed clamps, pull the boot back to throw some grease in to replace what spilled, then put on new clamps. Look up CV boot mods.

Look for the ear type clams instead of the generic screw type. I’ve heard some say they felt the “extra weight” of the screw mechanism when driving. I’ve used the screw type in the past and didn’t feel anything. Either will work fine.

Mine did the same thing after lift and diff drop. I got clamps from Napa, along with grease. Just need tool for clamp.

don't need any special clamps or tools.

just regular hose clamps work just fine. anyone that says otherwise is new here.

edit: here are some photos of exactly what you should do. And the exact clamps I used when I did this 12 years ago.

You should be fine if you take their advice. That's an OEM axle I think. They last a long time. That pink and white sticker is what they put on the Toyota axles.

Hose clamps will suffice. But the proper cv axle style clamp are superior for this application.

I’d not worry much about this situation during your long trip. Put some new banding on when you get back.

Update. Drove roughly 175 freeway miles yesterday after wiping down. Very little grease on one side. No grease was slung on the other. Think I am out of grease or they are settled into new positions?649A8F09-0735-44BC-853B-E2E9EE56D77E.jpg7AD69189-6DB2-4324-9643-4AA5A8A5F768.jpg

Use the marine hose clamps which are heavier. Not so secret secret from FJ community.

When you guys put new clamps on did you do it with truck on ground, truck on jack or jack under lower control arm to keep it little more flat?

on the ground. doesn't really matter. as long as you have good access. may as well inspect the boot while you're underneath. make sure it's not crimped/pinched also.

last time I rebuilt 1gen axles they were off the truck, lots of access there :D
