All modern engines seem to be more prone the leaking (partly because of water for oil, 0W-20), hell some new chevies don’t roll off the showroom floor without leaking rear mains.

So my ‘11 has had a slight weep for a while but never bad enough to be concerned about. Recently I started leaking and leaving stains in the driveway and would swear it was the rear main untilI noticed an oil drop forming above my header today. I can’t see it running down the motor anywhere but that doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Have you guys ever noticed the oil from the cam tower leak collecting on the bellhousing and dripping onto the crossmember?
    Thanks

Usually not. I’ve seen the valve covers do this though. Best thing to do is buy some good degreaser, clean the engine off REALLY WELL and let it run while watching if it’s leaking that bad. If not monitor it once a day or week to see where it originates from.

Thanks. I’ve been degreasing it for a week and still don’t see it draining. I’m assuming they’re both leaking at this point but I’ll have to tear it apart this weekend to know for sure. But on a positive note besides the sun beating up the paint I haven’t had a single issue with it until now at 152k miles so I can’t complain much.

Why TF isn’t Toyota using the black sealant to assemble these?

toyota always has used the grey stuff from the factory. black is what we get at the dealer. its identical other than the color. difference is dealer we probably put it on a bit thicker than a robot does

Alright. Well, maybe the leaking is just inherent to the design and doesn’t matter what sealant?

Otherwise I would assume the robot using more sealant would surely be less expensive than warranty repairs.

Maybe leaks aren’t all that common even if it seems that way on a forum.

I'm sure this is a first....

In July, I took my 2018 Tundra which I noticed was leaking at 6000 miles (now 15k) to Toyota. They confirmed it was leaking, didn't do the 10k oil change because they would be doing it when the leak is fixed. They ordered the parts and about 2 months later I finally took it in for repair. I dropped it off 4 days before appointment because I was out of town for a week. On the first day of repair, I receive a call from the service dept., stating the truck was ready.
Here's a bit of our conversation....

Me: WHAT?? What about the leaky cam tower??
Toyota: "Our mechanic says there is no leak! The oil on the cam tower is from the rust protection overspray."
Me: "I called 4 weeks before my appt and asked if it was a bad idea to have it sprayed 3 weeks before my appt, and you said it was fine?"
Toyota: "That's enough time for it to stop dripping, again, the oil on the cam tower was from the overspray, not a leak"
Me: "Can you ask the last mechanic who said it was leaking why he he said it was leaking?"
Toyota: "That mechanic is on sick leave"
Me: "Can I speak to the CSR who helped me and stated the truck will need the repair and parts will be ordered"
Toyota: "She's on sick leave as well"

So, the mechanic and the CSR who initially helped me are on sick leave and now my truck no longer has a leak? I also received a phone call from the original CSR telling me to make my appt because the parts were in. Of course I showed the new CSR my posts from this site/thread with a picture showing a leak at 6k miles. I also showed him a picture of the leak around 10k miles. Not good enough though, he wasn't buying it. I told him I will be back in 6 months with a leaky cam tower:mad:

    Ridiculous!!

sounds to me you have a tech that doesnt want to deal with the job (it is terrible paying under warranty) I would look into a different dealer personally.

On my 2021 the sealant around the valve covers is black. Is cam shaft tower the same as valve covers?

No, they're not. I took a couple pics for a friend of mine when he was shopping a used 2010. Try to find on your truck the points (lower eyelets) where I have the stick pointing. These seem to be the locations where they most often (but not exclusively) show the beginnings of a leak.

The first one kinda sucks to see, but the later two show the black sealant from when mine was resealed. There isn't any sealant on the valve covers.

Thanks I watched a video on you tube. So on my 2021 the sealant for the cam towers is black. Almost looks like Permatex ultra black but its anybodies guess. that's a pretty involved job, if it wasn't causing issues I would let it leak if out of warranty.

The Cam Tower fix calls for P/N 00295-00103, I have/had a tube of it around here someplace. It's about $20.

I had my cam towers seal replace on both side at the dealership under warranty. 8 months later the drivers side started leaking again after investigating. I also notice a leak on top where the fuel injectors are. When I looked at the cam towers on the upper part. I noticed a factory seal and the new black seal that the dealership just added without stripping the old seal. Looks like a shitty job. Now it’s leaking from the top and bottom. As for the passenger side. Same ! The new black seal was on top of the factory gray seal. Now I hope it doesn’t leak like the drivers side. My truck is in the shop now hoping they will do a quality repair this time and make it reliable again! I also requested a different technician!

Damn that sucks. Looks like shit, I wonder if they didn’t clean off the old sealant and just gobbed the new over it? I’d be pissed as hell!

Yes it does suck glow blue! You’re right ! The technician didn’t remove the old factory seal. He just added the new black seal. The dealership never saw the leak from the upper part of the cam tower! So they just replace the valve and said cam tower wasn’t leaking. When I went back to get my truck. I had to make sure and point it out to the servicemanager. Now my truck is back inthe shop for another few days!

I have engine oil there on the driver side but it was from poring oil too fast in the filler neck. It over flowed and ran down to the back of the engine.

Maybe next time probably pour the oil slowly so it wouldn’t run to the back. Or just wipe off the extra oil then you will be fine!

What dealership!? I bought my rig in Bellevue and if I need the repair I don’t want to take it there.

I agree with the others. Looks like the tech just used the sealant as caulk and didn’t actually take the engine apart.

You should be fine at Micheal Toyota in Bellevue! I got it done in Toyota of Seattle . As of today they had my truck for almost 2 weeks. Hopefully they are done with it today. Not really sure why it’s taking this long. Supposed to about a 16hr job. The service manager there said the tech completely started from scratch and wanted to make sure everything is a quality repair. Also they wanted to drive it for a 100mile to make sure no leaks. But I’m not really sure what’s going on at that dealership.

Thanks for the info. I know stuff happens and maybe original tech got fired for that job (hopefully), but what a mess. Never heard of a dealership paying a tech to drive a rig for 100 miles. Cannot decide if I like that or not, but it sounds like they are doing their best to fix it. Good luck!
