Hey guys! Got around to installing my URD fuel pump kit with the aeromotive fuel pump. The directions they sent were for a tacoma, so it wasnt a great reference. I thought I would post what I did to help someone in the future.

After removing the fuel pump assembly and draining it, cut the red and white wires from the fuel pump mid ways to the top of the assembly, but below the black shrink wrap that holds the black and white wire together, these wires are spliced/tied together somehow to ground a little gadget on the fuel pump assembly, so leave them that way. DO NOT CUT THE BLUE WIRES! They are for the fuel gauge float
    20200901_171332.jpg

Now this is the part I did a little different from the universal directions. In the directions it states to cut 2 holes in the fuel pump assembly bucket to run a metal band around the fuel pump to hold it in place. Now you can do that, but I used to stock fuel pump holder to keep from cutting anything, you'll see what I'm talking about when you do this, it has 3 legs that sit inside of the bucket and holds the fuel pump in the center. you have to bend the fuel pump strainer to make it fit, but you would have to do that with the metal band method as well.

    20200901_170447.jpg

Now that you have fuel pump installed in the bucket, we will go to the next step. The filter for the fuel pump isnt the strainer/sock on the bottom of the fuel pump, it's actually a donut/cylinder that's part of the entire fuel pump assembly, and you cant get rid of it. But you can bypass it! 20200901_200926.jpg

The nipple you see on the left, next to the metal piece sticking up, is where the hose from the stock fuel pump goes, you wont hook up anything to this nipple. You could, but then it would be pointless to install the external filter. The hose you see to the right, going from the filter donut, to the top of the fuel pump assembly, is where the fuel exits the filter. Go ahead and cut that hose off.
    20200901_171032.jpg

Hook up the hose to the fuel pump, and run it directly to the top of the fuel pump assembly, bypassing the filter completely. Both nipples on top of the donut filter should have nothing hooked up to them. When wiring the pump, the red wire is positive, and the white wire is the ground. After you have everything together, compress the fuel pump assembly and check to make sure the hose doesnt bind, it took me awhile to get mine where it wouldn't bind, so twist it whichever way you deem correct to get it to not bind. Now double check your work, get a beer, and reinstall everything! I'll post pictures in a little bit of some of the gunk that came out of the donut filter. My truck runs much better with the new pump, pretty sure my filter was pretty clogged and it wasnt getting good fuel flow. The power curve is way better, and it's not as sluggish on take off or when accelerating. Truck has 197k on it, and around 2000-2800 rpm the truck would surge like it wasnt getting enough fuel. That went away. Thank God! Very happy with the results

Edit: got an email from URD this morning stating this fuel pump is different then the ones they have worked on and developed this kit for. I believe they are going to make a kit for flex fuel trucks like mine. They were really helpful and courteous. I highly recommend them as a vendor for whatever you need!

Here is just a little bit of what came out of the donut filter, most of it spilled on the garage floor, but there was alot of gunk in there! 20200901_203957.jpg

After doing a little more research, I believe the flex fuel and non flex fuel trucks have totally different fuel pump assemblies. My truck is a flex fuel, so your results may vary

Thanks for the write up. I have been considering this also
I have fleXFuel and am getting a incorrect reading for alcohol content.
Was told I need a new fuel pump but not sure if this would fix my issue.

I dont think this would fix that issue, I simply just replaced the fuel pump, I think you have to get yours reflashed. I did this to bypass the internal filter, and now if I ever have to replace the fuel pump it will only cost 100 bucks instead of whatever Toyota wants.

Quick update, truck definitely has better throttle response and pick up during acceleration, the surge I was feeling around 2k rpm is gone, and I can hear the fuel pump when it's running when I'm standing next to the bed, which is nice for troubleshooting if it ever goes out or gives me problems. I'll keep everyone updated as I rack up the miles.

Put 5k miles on it so far, still running great! No issues at all. Longest trip was 13hrs. Gonna change the filter at 10k and cut it open to show everyone.

fantastic, thank you. Ive got a FF that doesn't engage in first gear and revs high until like 5 mph then takes off, but only when engine is cold and ECU reads high alcohol. Allegedly reflash is only a bandaid and new pump is needed to solve. For the price, servicing, and not having to deal with dealership; I'm considering this route instead.

Hmm never heard of a fuel pump causing those issues, but it could be. How many miles on your rig?

On the URD website they have a lot of options for fuel pumps for our trucks. Any insight on how to choose the right one? LPH? Aerpmotive, Deatschwerks, AED. etc...

Also did you need that special tool to get the fuel pump out?

I went with the aeromotive pump, seemed to be the most solid. From what I've read on all the pumps you can get a dud every now and then so just keep that in mind. And no, I didn't need a special tool. I used a large flat head screwdriver and a hammer to get the retainer ring off. Just tap the ring in 4 different spots across from each and don't go too crazy, itll come off without much issue

Sumo I want to make sure this is the kit you used for yours with the aero pump. I have a 2010 with the flex fuel and having the same issues you described. URD says it won’t work on flex fuel but apparently it will. Thanks for the info.

    That's the kit!

When I talked to them, they said it was the same regardless of flex fuel or not, but they didn't know until I sent them pictures, they said they were gonna buy one from a ffv truck and change the directions, but I guess they never did.
