So, I'm going to have to put one of my dogs down in a bit and I'll probably need to get out and relax in the forest afterwards. Due to my circumstances, I'm not sure of a date.

I'm kinda torn between something moderate difficulty to get my focus on other things or an easy cruise to zone out and be chill.

Debating between Devils Canyon and Rampart Range road.

    Anyone down?

Sorry to hear about your dog, that’s never easy to do, and especially if you have to plan it. I would think you might want something more relaxing and low key; your mind is going to be all over the place and in some good, but touchy Memories that might be distracting.
I got some devastating news while driving long distance, It was hard to drive and cry and focus and see the road. I stopped sooner or later at a casino so I could try and calm down and take my mind off it.
Good luck and hopefully you have some good support out on the trail and at home

Sorry to hear about your pup.

I'm down! Only problem is I am in Okinawa until the end of October. Then I quarantine for another 2 weeks at home.

Never heard of Devils Canyon. Need to check that one out on YT.

If I miss this one, there will be others. Keep me in the loop.

Thanks man. Yeah it's going to be hard, but she's in pain. It's hard to see her like this. She's making me question if I'm doing the right thing, because there will be moments where she seems fine and she's up and moving, going outside, licking us while we sit on the couch, stuff like that. Then like 10 minutes later, she'll groan in pain as she lays down, then is stuck on dog bed for many hours. It make it tougher too when our younger dog is having behavior issues like running around crazy in the house and bringing all his toys outside. I feel like he knows his best dog friend is dying. She's lived a great life though. She's peed on 15 different states and another country. She's seen the desert, the mountains, the swamp and, the plains. She's swam in the Pacific, the Atlantic, the Gulf and a bunch of rivers and lakes. I saved her from the shelter, being lost (multiple times) and a tumor on her spleen. She had a 70% chance of dying on the OR table, but she fought through. The only thing I can't save her from and she can't fight is time.

I'll let you know. If you can't make this, there will be plenty more.

    Sorry about the doggie :(

Depends when and where. Rampart is just a drive, but some good trails off of that (Balanced Rock).

I am not familiar with devils canyon. Will need to check that out.

Looked at Devils Canyon. Looks cool! That is like a 5 to 6 hour drive for me. Definitely a long weekend thing, at least for me. I'm getting old!

I lost my Halle a little over a year ago. Still miss her a lot. She died in my arms. I went up to the mountains the next morning and buried her. I'm going to PM you now Matt...

It's hard losing pets. We don't have kids, so our dogs are our kids. The plan is to spread some of her ashes back at her favorite dog beach in CA.

Check out Moon Beach. I've been all over that Island. South end is where the suicide cliffs are. Sad thing. The beaches are full of Periwinkle shells and more. Get a snorkel and head out at low tide off Naha. You can find and bring back giant clam shells. Lion fish abound too. Bring back Habu sake if customs let you. Habu Sake has the pickled Habu cobra snake in the bottle. Don't be tempted to buy the sea turtle shells. Definitely a huge "no way in hell". Been in Oki 5 times. A must.....Charlie's Tacos off Kadena AFB. Actually everytime I deployed to Oki was at Kadena. SR 71 Habu's were taking off every evening. 2 KC-135 tankers taking off before was a huge clue what was going to be taking place...and the dripping kero off the 71's as they'd taxi out to the runway. Good times. 1980, 81,82,83, 84.

Forgot....Orion beer.....! Giant spiders in the cane fields. Don't ask..and giant Cicadas too...fun times...
Oh....mongoose vs Habu fights. You can bet...hint...mongoose usually wins

I will give some of those a shot if I get a chance. I am working the same schedule here. 12 hours six days a week, 24/7 on call with a 45 minute recall.
They have cobras here? Cool. To hell with the spiders. I have seen the cicadas, yes they are pretty big.
Charlie's is on my to do list. Been hear and reading about that place for 30 years.

Yep, the "habu". The only snake species on Oki and it's a freaking cobra. The locals nicknamed the SR-71 Habu after the snake. The spiders can get pretty big. I remember seeing a young boy catch a large cicada. He tied a thread onto it and let it fly around in circles. Kuul. Charlies won't be a life changing experience (well maybe) but definitely worthy of stopping in. Taco's in Okinawa:thumbsup:

    Some stuff
    yes.

devil's canyon will be much more enjoyable than rampart. i've always found a bunch of yahoos out on rampart. especially the mt herman end. depending on how much dirt you wanted, you could add ute creek/south spring gulch on either the way up or down.

depending on how far you want to drive, here are some other options, especially with the leaves already starting turn.
    - peru creek to chihuahua gulch
    - lost park

sorry to hear about the pup.

Matt, Sorry to hear about your dog. That is never easy. I'm up for anything. Rampart is nothing special but we camp there often and know of some cool places. Actually we plan to camp there this weekend with the holiday craziness. Hidden valley road is a fun drive that connects rampart road to spring creek rd. Nothing to technical but still a nice drive close to the city. Road therapy is always good for me!

well, I took the pup to the vet and they said she's healing, but won't be the same again. She's slowed down considerably, but she's starting to show signs of enjoying the things she once did like getting brushed and having her belly rubbed. I mean, she's almost 15, so she's like 80 in human years. She's decided to live and I'm going to do what I can to make her comfortable.

Still want to go 'froadin, but the fires are being bitches. Sunday and Monday were a bit rough for me. Been out of forest fire country for too long. I'm not used to the smoke anymore. I don't remember the smoke irritating my throat this much before.

Matt, I'm sorry to hear about the pup. Sometimes even the right decisions are difficult to make. Remember the good times! Funny how I look back at some of the stories where my previous pup was a pain in the ass and now they are some of the best stories I have.
