Hey guys so I’m new here after a bunch of research I’m doing an “adventure or overland” build with a 2006 access cab Limited I’m buying next week. I’m not new to trucks or Toyota but new to tundra platform. Already looking into suspension but was wondering what you guys are using for lockers I want at least a rear locker. Also I’m probably going with some 285-70-17 tires when is there a need for re gearing and what ratios? Also I’ve Seen there’s not a lot of aftermarket for bumpers I like the brute force fab ones especially for the rear high clearance but are there any other brands that offer something similar? Thanks for any info much appreciated

With just 33’s, you can get away (debatable) without a regear. But if you plan on bumpers and adding additional weight, you’ll want to look into 4.56 or 4.88 gears. Somebody more knowledgeable will need to answer your locker question.

Thanks yeah I plan on adding bumpers and a four wheel camper so I thought I may need a re gear to get back some power just wondering what a good ratio would be. I’ve found a lot of people running 4.56’s just not sure if 4.88 would be to much gear

An all stock tundra running 245/70/16 tires is spinning around 2000 rpm’s driving between 60-63 mph. Spicer has a pretty good gear calculator. I plugged some numbers into it to give you an idea. 2000-2004 and 05-06 v8 tundras have nearly identical transmission ratios once you’re in the highest gear.

Inquiring minds want to know, what do these outputs mean, is lower or higher desirable? I see a 5 mph variance... I lost you from there. Thanks sensei

4.56 would be better unless you plan on going with bigger tires down the line. Would recommend regear at the time you add a locker. I like the e-locker by Eaton.

Love the look of 35’s but I don’t think its worth the effort of the amount of trimming that seems to be needed. Probably stick with 33’s and go with the 4.56 and locker.

I wouldn’t over think it, believe me, I have already. This isn’t perfect, but in my opinion, if you’re running 33 inch tires on a first gen tundra. I would do 4.56 on an access cab and 4.88 on the crew cabs. Can @Darkness and @2006Tundra please chime in?

Check the stickies up top. There is an armor thread there, and @Darkness has a post early in the info dump page. For suspension there's a couple hundred threads, or check the 1st gen build page to see what people have and like.

For driving you'll be fine on stock gears. When you are ready to add a locker, throw in 4.56 gears and you'll get some good low end grunt back. Contact Justdiffs when you are ready and they can help you set up a package with Nitro parts.

@vst I recommend speaking with someone from https://www.nitro-gear.com/ or https://www.justdifferentials.com/ . If you tell them your needs, they'll steering you in the right direction.

When I was in the re-gearing market, I called Nitro Gear and Just Differentials. Both said to run 4.56's for 31-33" tires and 4.88's for 35-37". Since I plan to run a 34's and tow, they recommended to go to 4.88's. I'm very happy with the gears. I also installed a Eaton TrueTrac. Something to consider since you're thinking about re-gearing.
