This will serve to log the journey of a 2006 Double Cab 4x4 Limited I picked up in August 2020 with 198k miles on the clock.

The main purpose of this workhorse is to ferry my kids & water gear to the family friendly areas of the Jersey Shore, and to perform double duty as my big box home improvement store mule and to don a snow plow during the harsh winter months.

Just shy of finding a 1st gen with a newly replaced frame, I did my best to find one with the least amount of rust. The classic barnyard find was rather elusive, and time was not on my side. So the used car stealer was where i ended up finding one. As for the frame condtion, much of it was masked by the fresh undercoat painting done by the stealer, but no serious issues of rot were found.

Photos from the Craiglist posting, where I originally found it:

    First issues to tackle:

    - hood latch does not lock hood down, 2nd latch OK

    - check engine light code P0420 (O2 sensor, rear cat left)

    - front brake line leak

    - tailgate lock frozen

    Mechanicals section, needed work:

    - suspension
    - timing belt / water pump (no known history of the TB ever being changed)
    - brakes
    - door checks need replacement, doors won't stay open/ajar, keeps on slamming shut

Installing a new Android HU today. I should be tending to the front right brake line that burst, but parts I purchased from CoolSprings Toyota are on backorder. :(

This is a fantastic value at $169 from Amazon. It's the ATOTO A6, standard edition model. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07B3TX6MF

I have plans to install a front and rear camera, and put in a switch that I can toggle between the two.

For now, it will support to two main functions I need it for:
    1. Bluetooth audio for hands free cell phone
    2. Bluetooth audio for my tunez

Pre-fit test. I have the a trim kit ordered to fill the gaps on the left and right.

There is a JBL amp in my setup, so I needed to buy the appropriate Metra/Axxess kit/harness. Here is the resulting harness after I soldered, heat shrinked and wrapped with fuzzy TESA tape.

While I was trying to figure out where to mount the new radio's included GPS antenna, I stumbled upon the location of the factory mounted version. What a piece of engineering! There is a custom flat platform that is mounted centrally under the dash. It is located directly above the radio cutout in the dash, and is held by two bolts.

I've removed the OEM one, and new one is mounted as shown.

Rear brakes - full teardown. Cleaned up and wire wheeled everything. Painted, then reassembled. Used Syl Lube synthetic brake grease, POR 15 Rust Preventative (gloss black) on the backside of the backing plate, and the brake drum exterior and inner lip.

Used Rustoleum Rust Reformer on inner backing plate, and after a couple of days, rust still broke through.

This is an awesome thread. How did the rest of the ATOTO installation go? Have any additional docs and photos of the finished product? Curious to know what you did for cameras.

Thanks! I haven’t completed the rear camera yet, I’m trying to route wiring to the back and likely use a license plate frame camera. I will update with more photos and info here.

Otherwise, the Atoto works well, I often launch Torque Pro to monitor my truck’s stats. It’s awesome for that.

Oh dang. Just getting into modifying my Tundra and have never heard of Torque Pro. Googled it and I'm sold. Thanks for the tip.

You still have the OEM GPS antenna? Want to sell it? I am putting an E7009 in my 2006 DC and need one.
