A few footnotes from my exhaust install this week.

Instructions didn't come in the box. I hadn't installed an exhaust system of any sorts since my 1988 Mitsubishi Starion and an HKS off road exhaust when I used to race.

That being said, I attacked this project in my garage with a large floor jack, and two tall jack stands. I lifted the rear of the truck form the axle and placed the jack stands under the bolts for the rear axle suspension landings.

This gave me all the room in the world to comfortably work on my back and raise my arms.

    1) I used an air impact wrench to remove the front bolts on the flanges. All 4 bolts are 14mm heads. The rear clamp was more manageable with a air socket wrench. It's a 12mm head.

    2) Once all the bolts are released and the rear clamp is removed, the tailpipe separates from the exhaust center section. Let it hang on the one hangar its already attached too. Don't be surprised when the exhaust gasket on the rear section separates into a spiral that looks like a slinky (for those of you too young to know what this is, google is your friend). Remove it, and put it aside for now.

    3) Remove the center section by offsetting from its current position and sliding the section forward to remove from the hangars.

    4) Grab the new center section and install with new gasket at the rear.
    a) I had a heck of a time aligning the front flanges with the exhaust tubes post catalytic converter. I grabbed a vise grip and made the flanges hold together where all was aligned. Unfortunately this was after I had already messed the threads up on one bolt. If you end up here with a screwed up bolt on startup, continue reading. If you have avoided this faux Pas, continue to 5).

    b) The flange bolts are are actually threaded to two sizes. The first part is a 10mm thread with 1.25 teeth. The second and most of the bolt is an 11mm thread with 1.25 teeth. The bolts are softer metal than the welded nuts on the flanges. Fortunately I had a tap and die set, and was able to reconvince the bolt to get back to the correct threading. Took me about an extra fifteen minutes. Had I of grabbed the vise grip first, I wouldn't have been in this position and messed the threads up. Fortunately it was in the beginning of the bolt and all was fixed and correct again.

    5) Once you connect all the front flange bolts and align the rear exhaust flange with the tailpipe, make sure you don't go super tight at first. You will need to adjust the angle of the tailpipe exit withe fender. That's all accomplished at this joint you at the rear section.

I drove around one day, and realized I needed to add the Helmholtz resonator. I have the 10 inch system, I can't imagine you all with the 8 or 6. I would never make a handsfree call again? Anyway, followed the same steps again with jack and jack stands.

    Resonator install:

    1) Grab the resonator and sharpie or chalk. I used a sharpie. I found the saddle of the resonator to be crimped smaller rather than larger and had to flatten it out a bit with a nylon hammer. After a little bit of the hammer, I was able to get the resonator to fit and hold in place by itself on the top of the tailpipe U. By this time I had watched one of Keith's earlier videos on the install. The main take away's are:

    a) Make sure it is parallel with the spare tire.
    b) Clears the rear axle if the axle was to compress and ride high into the upper suspension.
    c) Angle it slightly higher at the end so water doesn't accumulate in it, yet not resting against the bed.

    2) After marking the fit of the resonator, I removed the tailpipe from the center section, and the one hangar it hangs on. Be careful not to let the tailpipe drop as it will damage your tip or the end that is exposed.

    3) I placed the tailpipe in a circular vice, and drilled a 2 inch hole with a hole saw into the tailpipe center of the markup. The tailpipe steel is relatively thin, and barely took ten seconds to cut it out completely.

    4) Reinstall the tailpipe, and loosely attach the center section clamp with gasket. Once in place and holding, verify the angle of exhaust tip, and tighten the center section a little more.

    5) Now attach the resonator and the U clamps provided. After torquing down the bolts pretty darn good, the flange sealed against the tail pipe.

    6) Now verify the angle of the exhaust tip one more time, place where you want it, and then bolt down on the center section clamp.

That should do it. I was able to make handsfree calls again in the truck immediately afterwards.

Hell I'm running DD budget with no mufflers or resonator, and cut my tailpipe off. Only really loud if you get on it, but I guess I’m used to loud vehicles.

I have the 10” system and was more than upset at how loud it was until I installed the resonator. It amazing what that little tube will do! Great write up

    Not nearly enough room here!
I gave my stock tailpipe away so Keith sent me one when I bought my 10" system. We discussed what sound level I was after, so he cut the resonator hole in the tailpipe before sending it. Install went 'ok'. I found out the heat shield is pretty sharp but only lost a quart or two of blood!:D Had a Corsa catback with thier Touring muffler first and really liked their tailpipe tip. Found that same style at Summit Racing,(identical tip but without "Corsa" on it)Resized_20191226_134349.jpg

Seriously? You were upset at how loud the 10" DD system is? I have good hearing (per the doctors) and I don't like the loud trucks that I can hear running up and down the highway parallel to my road a mile away. I think straight pipes are obnoxious and rude. So, I'm not really an advocate for loud exhausts by any stretch of the imagination. I have the 10" DD system and I didn't install my resonator for fear it would get quieter, and I almost wish I had gone with an 8" instead. Anyone who feels the unresonated 10" is too loud must have hearing like a bat!

Awesome installation write up! Also, I just have to point out to everyone that THIS GUY knows whats up when it comes to exhaust tail pipe style. I wish the TRD came twin out the same side.

I’m running a Corsa dB catback and it’s dead quiet until I really get on it. I wish it was a lot louder at times. Sounds like the 10” without resonator is the way to go for what I’m looking for. I don’t have the best hearing so it sounds like it would be perfect

Ya. I was t happy with the sound. Hard to explain. But now I do recall, and I blame the no instructions and my ego, but I didn’t discover the flange gasket until I installed the resonator. So I am assuming that played a late roll into the sound. It wasn’t leaking but probably rattled.

And yes. I do have some hearing damage so certain frequencies and sounds make it difficult for me to hear. Adding the resonator was night and day difference for me

What kind of hole saw did you use? I'm having a hard time finding a hole saw for stainless steel. Thanks

Any hole saw will work, just go slow and push hard as you can. I’ve made 3”+ hole saws last 40+ holes thru stainless wall liner, slow and lots of pressure so the teeth actually cut instead of slipping and creating heat

I was thinking the same thing. I have the 8" with no resonator. I like to make noise. This video would be fun.

I used the same one from Home Depot that AZBoatHauler listed below. Keith in his videos says to use to a 2 inch, that's why I used it. It easily cut through the steel tubing. So much so be careful not to use too much force as you will hit the other side.

The Milwaukee hole saw from Home Depot worked like a champ. Thanks all.
