My wife decided to move back to her hometown, Stratford, PEI.

I'm overwhelmed with the process of moving to Canada especially during the Covid-19 pandemic shelter in place for 14 days at your final destination.

Let's talk about my 2020 Tundra. In order for me to bring it to Canada. I have to own it out right. So, that's $45k I have to pay the bank. Then pay HST of 15% plus other fees. I have $15k negative equity due to 17,000 mileage. I'll be cash poor if I pay off the Tundra and bring it to Canada.

So, I'll take the hit on the $15k and sell the truck after bringing it back to original oem specification. Buy a anther 2020 Tundra in Canada, transport stateside in install all my upgrades and drive it back to Canada with my family pulling a camper.

Toronto and the Atlantic provinces are running out of Tundras. Specifically super white DC.

And, since I'm still in Florida, sales people do not want to invest their time with me even after I gave them my CC# for down payment to secure a Tundra.

I am having a friend test drive a GX460 for my wife too. But we'll pick that up after the self quarantine.

Getting the house ready for sale is another task, downsizing is hard especially after a accumulating stuff for a lifetime, then as a couple for 20yrs along with kids belongings and my cars and tools, and sutting down your business .

    I'm stressed and exhausted.

Oh, I'm an American, so I won't have a job till I get my PR and WP. Due to covid-19, biometrics are closed.

Having to own your truck outright to bring it to Canada sounds strange to me. Is that a rule imposed by whoever you're financing the vehicle through? I know a friend of mine bought himself a Cadillac STS-V in the southern U.S. several years ago when the dollars were at par and brought it back to Canada but it's possible that he paid cash for it.

That is the rule if you are going to move there. US customs want to make sure that you're not going to keep the vehicle in Canada ans stop paying your bills.

How would US Customs know that you are moving there and just not visiting? Just wondering.

    Damn, dude; that’s a lot.

    Here’s what I’d do:
    1) Call up this seafood market: 1-902-388-1525 and have them send down some mussels to FL.

    2) Put on Anne of Avonlea

    3) Tell the wife you’ll get around to finishing the moving stuff at some point, but right now you need garage time to decompress.

    4) Put 2 more mods on your tundra before swapping it over to the Canadian version.

The easy solution would be to let her go. Find a new model and keep the Tundra and house. :notsure:

Someone post about the US custom part on Facebook I think. I can't find to reread it and see exactly that it was.

I've been racking my brain for the past couple of weeks on it. Doing all the research and calling the Canada border crossing for direction. At first I thought that I can just keep on making payments on my credit union. But I can not register it or have it insured in Canada. The vehicle have to be admissible in Canada with no modifications.

    https://www.riv.ca/ImportingAVehicle.aspx
    • Recall clearance letter
    • The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid U.S. Statement of Compliance (SOC) label at the time of import.
    • Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN)
    • Metric speedometer
    • Odometer labels
    • Daytime running lights
    • French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic maintenance
    • Air bag equipped vehicles are required to have functioning air bags at time of inspection.
    • If the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the vehicle is less than 10,000 lbs. and the manufacture date is after September 1, 2007, it must be equipped with an electronic immobilizer system that meets Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 114.
    • Please note: vehicles that have been modified beyond typical repair such as lift kits or glider kits are inadmissible for import into Canada

I sold both race cars, the Miata, still have my wife's SUV, the Minivan, and a Scion to sell. Minivan and Scion is not comply with the rule. SUV will need costly repairs for it to be in compliance with the Canadian safety inspection.

    1) My Father-in-law is a big fan of Water Prince, that's where he gets my lobster feast when I visit. I go to New Glasgow lobster supper in the summer.

    2) My Mother-in-law is "Ann" with an "e", Anne from Antagonish, NS.

    3) She is packing the inside and I am usually outside trying to figure out which of the 5 miter saws should I get rid off. Or which if the 8 cordless drills should I bring.

    4) I'm actually shopping for more upgrades. It's going to be expensive importing stuff to the island. My Amazon Prime will never be the same.

Dude...You got a lot of chips on the table. Good Luck.

From Florida to Nova Scotia?...Can a human being even survive that? She must be an incredible woman. The good news?...you won't have to give up Tundras.com even if you can't afford a Tundra anymore. :D

I grew up in Southeast Texas and spent one winter in Nova Scotia and one in Newfoundland.

-40°F in Eastern Canada is dangerously cold , but surprisingly the winters were colder in North Dakota when I lived there for 4 years. It was -70°F ( w/ windchill) when I left North Dakota.

PEI is beautiful in the summer, but I don't think I'd leave the U.S. to live there permenantly, especially if I lived in Florida.

Get ready for some serious culture shock.

My wife and I have been together for 20yrs, married for 18yrs. I love the island during the summer and I do go up there some winters as recent as last year. Weather is not my big concern, is the least of my concern.

I'm making a decent living right now, but while doing some job searches, I see some of the jobs that supposed to be a high paying skilled jobs or managerial positions are not as I was expecting. Especially when you start converting it to CND to USD. In short, I'll b making the same money I was making 20 years ago and work as hard both physically and mentally with a deteriorating body through age. But, at least I don't have to pay for healthcare anymore.

I do not want to leave Florida, but for my wife's well being and my children's future, I have to take this leap with both eyes open and press on. I need to get some type of job sponsorship so I can start making money as soon as I am done with quarantine. And re-invent myself and create a new market for me to be able to capitalized from. I don't want to be rich, but I just don's want to worry if I can afford to put gas in my vehicle so I can work and put food on the table and roof over my head.

Yes, it is going to be a culture shock. Like moving from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Florida 22 years ago.

John, I think you're predicting my future. I might not be able to afford the Tundra anymore, but I will still have Tundras.com!

    Thanks for listening........

I would stop and take a deep breath first, maybe even have some beer.

Why does your wife want to move? Maybe you should sit down and talk with her and see if you can talk her into staying in the USA, maybe she would be happier if you moved closer to Canada, but stayed in the USA? As you already know the cost of living in Canada is even worse than here, from what I hear anyway. Or, maybe you could delay it until the truck is actually paid off over time, and you are not rushing to sell your house and everything else.

I can tell form your post, as you stated, that this is causing a significant amount of stress. I would wait until things get better, hopefully by next spring and that way you can accomplish more without some many headaches to go along with it. My other concern is that you said "My wife decided...". There is no singular person deciding things in a marriage, it has to be a "we". It sounds like you two need to talk about what "we" want to do and not just what she wants to do. If your marriage is truly healthy than you should be able to come up with some sort of compromise that causes less stress for both of you, if it is not healthy than I suggest holding off until you are in a better place with your relationship so you don't throw all your hard work away only to end up back in the USA and broke. This is probably the worst time to change your country with COVID going on, but I am sure you figured that out!

I watched an off road show where Canadians were driving a US plated vehicle up to the arctic ocean. They were initially denied entry at the border because Canada thought they were trying to import the vehicle. They had to fill out some paperwork and then Canada gave them 30 days to have the truck back to the US.

I know you are American, but sounds like you might not have a visa yet? Canada might tell you that you only have so much time to have the truck back out of the country if you tried to bring it.

Only goofin' with you. After checking out PEI on the wiki, it looks like a very nice and interesting place to live. At least, during the warm season. Best of luck to you on the job scene.

No visa yet. I will get it once I'm on PEI. Due to covid-19 bio metrics are supposedly shutdown or on limited capacity and the process takes longer. I will come in as a visitor and my wife will sponsor me to get permanent residency.

My wife works in the school system and the state is pushing for brick and mortar back to school without and guidelines on how to do it safely. My wife just survived breast cancer last year and is in fear of our health if she is forced to go back to work to keep her employment in an environment that will compromise her and the people around her. I, owning my own business in the construction industry am trying to start a new business venture to lessen my exposure to people, practicing more physical distancing.

"We" need to decide to move and it's unfair of me to state it's just "her" decision alone. "We" have to decide as partners in life.

    Thank you T!

Hell of a time to be uprooting and moving.
A buddy of mine's wife did a similar thing to him, just said "I'm moving to Florida" and he uprooted everything as he knew it and moved down there with her. She sprung this and they moved during the last recession here (2009-ish?). He had a hard time finding a job and ended up doing one he hated, ended up drinking heavily, and I got phone calls from him telling me he wanted to kill himself. After 7 years he finally snapped and said "I'm moving back to Maine, BYE" and moved back home.
It should be discussed, it should be a mutual decision, and you shouldn't be this stressed out. My husband and I have been looking at property for TWO YEARS but haven't pulled the trigger because we can't find one in a location that tickles our pickles and he wants to change career paths as well, so we're doing it in stages.. Just my .02 and personal experiences.

I can understand that , PEI (I think is one of the Provinces with no COVID cases ) . I’ve heard it’s beautiful there , I haven’t been but my wife and I would love to spend a couple weeks there one day . You’ll definitely find it more expensive but you do get free health care as you’ve already mentioned . Best of luck to you and your family and I hope everything works out for the best .

Problem solved! I spoke with the CBSA and they said that I can go in and travel into Canada with my Tundra and Camper as a tourist and once I am across we can change our status to settler.
This will be our kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping quarters during the move.

What camper is that? Don’t see any markings. Is it custom made?

Sprinter-PT01 3C (Prototype 01 Cross Country Camper). Yes, it's custom made. I'll start building it for people, once I settled in PEI. Base DIY, to full custom.

    Update:

Stripped the Tundra with most of the upgrade parts. Keeping the OEM fender flares, TRD Pro grill and bulge, mirror caps, bed rug and topper.

Purchased a 2012 Sequoia Platinum which is getting a 2020 face lift, deleted the AVS shocks and replaced with 5100 top setting from the Tundra, purchased 5100 for the rear, installed TRD sway bar from the Tundra, bought rear TRD sway bar. Installed the wheels and tires off of the Tundra. Removed all the chrome badges, will acid wash and paint matte black. Installed TRD Pro Grill, updated headlights, and trim delivered, just waiting for the harness and washer bracket to get in so I can finalize the face lift. I hope this pass inspection for the provincial registration.
