I’m about to get new wheels and tires and every site I’ve shopped at always has the option of a TPMS (tire pressure monitor sensor). They run at about $200, do I have to get these for my 06 Tundra?

Do you have them in the wheels you have now? If you do I would use the ones you have now.

They are certainly not required, however you will have a flashing TPMS warning light in your gauges. I have at least one sensor that I know is bad and the battery has probably died. The previous owner did not do the maintenance like he was supposed to and it's a nice luxury to have to make sure your tires don't get low, but, that's why I bought a $10 digital tire gauge and I check it myself. So if you have the money I would say go for it but it really is a luxury so don't worry about it.

I’m not positive on whether I have them in my wheels now. I’ve heard with using existing ones it a bit of a hassle to get them out of the old wheels into the new one. Also I do have the tire pressure signal on.

Bad idea to put on new wheels and tires and leave valve stems that old. I would rather install new regular valve stems. Instead of reusing the old ones.

You could always do a TPMS delete. That's what I did with my Tundra

Bypass the TPMS system and check your tires periodically instead.

You can also buy denso tpms senors from Amazon for $50 a pop and have them programed. But it is easier to bypass the system and just periodically check tire pressures

I kinda like having the TPMS, and so when I was getting new wheels and tires I set up an appointment with the dealership to get 5 new sensors installed in the wheels. When I showed up the service advisor (that's what they call them) couldn't grasp that I wanted new sensors in the wheels so I could swap back to my stock wheels without moving sensors if I chose. After a 5 minute session of "No, I want 5 new sensors. Do NOT remove the sensors from my OEM wheels." and such, he finally got it. Went to check, and they only had one sensor in stock "but we can get the others by tomorrow." I live 2 hours away from them, so I was pissed. Asked why they confirmed the appointment where I specifically stated that I wanted 5 new sensors if they didn't have them in stock. Got a deer in the headlights look.

So, I rolled down the block to Discount Tire and had them do it with aftermarket sensors. That was a mistake. They've been sporadic at best. I either have the --- for pressure, or I get a warning that the TPMS is malfunctioning and to see the dealer. They also only put 35 PSI in when I asked for a minimum of 40-45. Not sure I'll bother with Discount Tire for any work in the future.

    Sorry for the rant.

I know I know, mine is a 3rd gen, but it's a similar problem regardless of generation.

Toyota sensors are picky. The DENSO sensors are OEM but cheaper direct from the manufacturer

Yeah? I don't know what brand Discount used, and I know there's a few different sensors even staying OEM depending on the model year.

Denso is the supplier ( the sensors do not say denso mind you) on everything except siennas with run flats for some reason which are made by TRW

The denso ones I believe saw pacific on them
