I shorted my alternator hot wire to the frame while I was trying to install engine mounts. It was brief, about a second. But lots of sparks. My horn is going off constantly and won't stop. Also, I can't lock the doors, unlock makes the lights flash, but lock does nothing. I disconnected the horns to silence them. There's no lights on the dash, turning on the truck (I can't start the engine yet because of other reasons) all the lights seem normal.

    Any ideas what happened??

Yeah that's a good idea. I'll pull the battery cable and see if it changes. I do plan on checking fuses, but I just couldn't fathom why a blown alternator fuse would cause the horn to blow constantly

I thought about that, but it's not a horn on/off like an alarm. It's constantly blowing

I’d be looking at the body ground cable between the battery neg. post and the inner fender, make sure it’s not burnt. And ground straps between the engine and frame would be worth checking too.

If you haven’t already, look at that big 140A (or is it 160A??) ALT fuse as well. It’s bolted in from below, so if it’s fried it’s a bit of a chore to change.

I pulled battery, no change. I checked some more stuff in the truck:

Windows, radio, climate control system, all dead with key in ON position.
Head lights, cab lights, instrument cluster all work.

I'll check the big alternator fuse next. But I have to remove a bunch of stuff from on top of the fuse box first. Might not get to it today

Can you explain a little further? Is it a cube fuse in the big fuse box? "bolted in from below" do you mean from below the fuse box or below the fender? I want to make sure I don't take a bunch of stuff apart if I don't have too LOL

It’s a bit like this if I’m not mistaken. This is for a 2nd gen tacoma, so we’re a bit different.

anybody have a part number or picture of the fuse?? I'm trying to see what it looks like. One guy reported he pulled it out, but it was difficult, had to use pliers

I’ve done a bit more Tundra-specific research, and it appears the 180A Alt. fuse is part of a fusible link block. Don’t take this part number as being the correct one (it might be, but there are different amperages), but it gives a better idea of what you’re up against.

Thanks man! This really helps. From what I can tell, I have to buy the whole "fusible link block". But now I'm trying to figure out if that actually comes with the fuse. Toyota isn't making this easy for me haha

YES!!! OMG WHAT A PAIN IN THE D. But yes, I got it mounted last weekend. Now I just need need to finish up the rest of my punch list:

    shocks
    skids
    electrical problem
    fuel problem
    new wheel spacer
    new wheel
    fml

    UPDATE:

Ok local Toyota dealer ran my vin and said that 82620-0C030 BLOCK ASSY FUSIBLE LINK, is the correct part that I need. The technician said that there are all kinds of things that blow inside that block so just replace the whole thing.

Crossing my fingers that this will fix everything. Also, @Vizsla sent me this video which basically makes me cry a little when I watch it, but we'll see how it goes:

UPDATE: What a pain in the D!

I was able to take apart the fuse/relay box and get the damn fusible link installed. Now I know a little about how open heart surgeons feel:

    20190807_152744.jpg

These are these little clips that surround the upper part of the box and attach it to the lower:

    20190807_153959.jpg

This is me at work studying that video and realizing he skipped the part where he removed the fusible link from the box:

    IMG_20190807_105545_01.jpg

He must have broken it haha The key is to remove the fuse block that is attached to it at the same time. There are a couple clips you have to pry then you can push them out the bottom. Once you get both removed as one assembly, then you have to unbolt (one bolt) the fuse block from the fusible link. Sorry, I didn't get pictures, I was too excited that I finally got it free.

Anyways, I will inspect all the wires and button it back up in the next day or two. Apparently this is a common part to have to replace. The dealer said guys are always reversing the cables when they jump the truck and blow it out. Here are a couple tips, if you ever have to do this and have questions hit me up:

Be careful with the clips, I broke two. But I'm not worried about it. I'm sure it will stay together

There are a couple connectors to remove, two at the top and one on the side of the box closest to the engine. I didn't take it as far apart as that guy did in the video.

The two big wire bundles at the bottom on the side of the box by the fender, cut the tie wraps and it will give you more room to pull the box up for access to the bottom.

The fusible link is attached to the fuse block next to it with a bolt. Remove them both from the bottom by prying the tabs then unbolt them.

Do not attempt to do this while drunk

Note that this is for second generation tundra. I ordered the aforementioned fuse assembly only for my mechanic to say that i have a 1st gen... not a 2nd gen.. haha. Anyone else able to confirm that fuse assembly is the fix for 1st gen with same symptom of horn blaring? Just in case someone else does what i just did... lol
