My tonneau cover is 3 rigid panels and just says: "Toyota" on it(not sure who made it)*. The CrewMax has a 5 1/2. bed. Stake pocket covers visible on top of bedsides. I have 18' canoes & want to get a compatible rack system. Any recommendations on how to do it? 2 boat or ladder racks on bedrails, 1 rack at rear of bedrails + 1 across cab roof?

*I think it's an EXTANG Solid Fold 2.0 Tonneau Cover w/ Toyota logos.

I made some 14 ga sheet metal angle, put some bolts through and welded the bolt heads, then mounted it to the bed rails so I could still use the tonneau and I didn’t want to drill any holes in the truck. I have a ladder rack and I’m making a rack for my RTT. That way I can swap out whatever rack I want to use or just go with no rack.

    Don’t know why it uploaded duplicate pictures 8BF1B59E-789A-4F34-BCC2-20326A0684A3.jpg8BF1B59E-789A-4F34-BCC2-20326A0684A3.jpg D1994B6B-711B-4405-82EA-F8284C8CA101.jpg8BF1B59E-789A-4F34-BCC2-20326A0684A3.jpg EEF405EE-BE0B-451C-919B-63CE19D3EF93.jpgC4285307-A7E3-4E05-A0E1-9A1CACCE73D8.jpg 8BF1B59E-789A-4F34-BCC2-20326A0684A3.jpg D1994B6B-711B-4405-82EA-F8284C8CA101.jpg C4285307-A7E3-4E05-A0E1-9A1CACCE73D8.jpg EEF405EE-BE0B-451C-919B-63CE19D3EF93.jpg

OP, the only ladder rack system I’ve seen that’s compatible with a rigid tonneau cover (like the BAKFlip MX4) is the Adarac Pro Series. For the 5.5’ bed, it’s model #A4001671. It’s the only system I’m aware of with arms that are straight up and down, clears the cab, and mounts in a way that you can still fully open / close a tonneau cover such as yours. The cheapest I’ve seen it is here:

Thanks -- I came to that conclusion, too and called them up. Their fit tech worked through it with me and concluded that the tracks of theirs that go down on the stake pockets would interfere with the in-place cover sections. I think it would work when I had the bed cover off...but that takes awhile.

Interesting. I’m about to pull the trigger on the Adarac myself, now you have me second guessing. Do you know what type of tonneau cover you have? I have the BAKFlip MX4.

As I edited on the first post above, I think the Toyota tonneau cover is really the Extang Solid Fold 2.0 Tonneau Cover, going by the buckles and panel layout.

Take a look at Magnum headache racks. with their rail system and a rear rack, you might be OK. Spendy though.

Alternatively, you might want to find a different tonneau that is more forgiving?

I didn't have the will to buy the only pre-made metal rack that fits my '15 Crewmax, $988[Galleon Truck Rack from USRacks illustrated], so built one of scrap lumber.

Back uprights are 30 3/4" o.a., with 6 1/4" bed pocket extensions; with 14" pieces screwed on outboard of them...the tops rise up 2 1/2" above the cross-piece...to act as load stops. The four 2 x 4s were literally laying on the ground under a snowpile til 2 weeks ago. Applied lots of linseed oil and Briwax to renew the dried-out wood.

Front uprights are 6" logs milled in half(36 3/4" o.a.), flat side in, with notches 6" from top, 1 1/4" deep, to accept horizontal 2 x 4s. Gives me a 4 1/2" load stop...built-in using one piece of wood instead of two. I used a draw knife to shape them a little. A normal person would've used a table saw to mill out the built-in bed-pocket extensions - but I did it with a skillsaw/draw knife/hammer/chisel/horseshoe rasp. Location had to be precise to not hang out, not be in the way of the tonneau cover, not be too wide to fit in the stake pocket, or too deep. Stained them with 1-step stain/seal for decks. These half-logs were in the scrap pile at work.

Finished by putting on two 2 x 4s horizontally as cross-pieces(torx screws) and four 1.5" lag screws in the holes provided to anchor the uprights. I wind up with 24 1/2" of rise above the bedrails and 5 1/2" above the 19" cab height. Tried it out today on a 50-mile trip and all is well.

Decided to get a U.S. Racks rack after all.
Pretty well engineered, made in USA, lots of aluminum and stainless steel and matches my Silver Sky Metallic Tundra. Assembling it is a trip, though. Shipping weight with 8 canoe brackets thrown-in was 106 pounds.

I got the U.S. Racks GALLEON WIDE installed with 2 sets of Malone Canoe Brackets. Will try to post a picture of it with a couple of racing boats on board.
