My wife and I are considering an in bed tent or an RTT for my 2018 tundra platinum. I’m new to this realm but an experienced camper. What setup do people have in here and what sort of price range? The wife is not into camping so I’m thinking off the ground is best, we are trying to keep things cheap right now to dip our toe into it as well. Thanks in advance for the advice!

My brother has a roof top tent on his Tundra and absolutely loves it. He's able to go camping most weekends and says that the difference between his RTT and his traditional tent is night and day. He says the RTT is feels like home compared to ground camping.

I'm sure a in-bed tent would be nice too, but the RTT keeps the foam pad and bedding in the tent, making it slightly more convenient.

I spent a few years camping with a RTT. I had spent the last 30 years in a ground tent. I loved every night in the RTT. No more waking up at 2am with wild pigs rooting around next to your head. Loved not stowing a wet tent next to the rest of my camp gear.
Last year I was offered a rotten FWC for dirt cheap. So now after a 6 month build I am getting ready to use it. I like the RTT so much it is still in my shed, otherwise I would have sold it after getting the FWC.

since just dipping a toe in the water and given your an exp camper, i'd try to do a bed tent first. at least you'd be off the ground and you can get a decent one for a few hundred. throw in a foam mattress or something like a thermarest and you're good. i use a bed tent in my cm. with both solutions you're more married to keeping your truck stationary which can be a pain. when i want to take the truck out, it takes a few minutes to move stuff out, pull the tent and put it on the ground, etc. same for rtt. you'd have to pack up to use the truck.

Look for a lightweight used one. People buy new RVs and hardly use them. We found a 2008 24’ ultralight that looks and smells like new for a fraction of the price of a new one. 4300 lbs dry.

Have not camped with the new truck yet thanks to the ‘Rona!

But I can get the Egg into a lot of spots that the bigger rigs will not fit.

    Fully self-contained too of course.

Do you have a topper or bed rack? As it goes in this forum but once, cry once. I’d be careful how cheap you go. A bit more info on to how long are you going out, where do you plan on storing gear (think wet gear [bed rack versus topper]), and budget. Cheap doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

I’d either go ground tent or a truck bed camper. By the time you buy a rack / topper, RTT, awning, etc you could just buy something like the habitat and get more function and quicker and easier setup for about the same price.

I’m using a cvt mt Shasta extended on a bamf rack. I like it and my kids love it. Don’t really have any regrets with it except where to keep the annex right now.

Truck bed tent matches with your wish list.

At least that's what I'm planning to do myself when the time comes.

My last camping trip I removed my rear seats out of my Crewmax and slept there. If you are taller than 6ft probably won’t be comfortable.

Pick up a smittybilt RTT. All those tents are made by the same manufacturer and companies like CVT and Tepui add in different colors and accessories and Jack up the price.. smittybilt Overlander is a great starter tent to explore RTTs and upgrade if it’s a style of camping you enjoy.

We considered the Smittybuilt RTT to get our feet wet and decided screw it and went all in.....camper is a great place to be, especially with dogs that will never sit still. I just move their kennels into the bunk space. First trip out with the double tow rig is next week.

Stay away from a roof top tent if you’re just trying to keep it cheap and dip your toe. A good roof top tent is going to cost you 3-4K and you still need a bed rack. (No hate on rtt I actually wish I had one but if you’re just dipping your toe, not worth that investment)

buy a Napier truck tent and air mattress or cut some memory foam. Tent is $170 and bigger than most roof top tents.

I would love to see pictures of your restored FWC...I'm assuming FWC stands for Four Wheel Camper.

I've considered all the options but I always seem to come back to the FWC.

I wanted a rtt, but my wife always says where’s the bathroom. At least with a rtt you are up off the ground. And from what I’ve seen, they quickly fold up when it’s time to go. Like others said, I was looking at the smittybilt. It’s cheaper than the alternatives.

We did tent camping for many years. A massive storm and campsite flooding brought that to an end so we started looking for a pop up or similar. Have had this for several years and scored it for just $1300. After some cleaning, painting inside and the wife wanted to redo the cushions and all with "newer" fabric, we have a nice little camper that keeps us off the ground, dry and comfy.

Let me start a thread where I can dump some pics so I dont clutter this one up. The only thing I didnt touch was the pop up vinyl. All Terrain campers will ship it to you but I have read it is tedious to replace. I got mine with a rotten floor but great vinyl so it was the perfect score. I think FWC or ATC is the best thing going, especially if you like to camp in poor weather.

So I may one of the few who prefers ground camping. BUT, I use a cot with a Klymit air mattress. Sometimes I'll even put a blanket under and on top of the air pad. I have an XL cot so no issues with comfort. The two reasons I prefer a ground tent is because when I first got back into camping with my kids (hiatus between the Marine Corps and parenthood), if there is an emergency, I can grab my keys and take off. I don't have to waste time trying to put an RTT away. I have a large 9 man for me and my kids (wife prefers the Hyatt)...and a Rightline SUV tent that attaches to the back of my Tundra if I don't anticipate using my truck. I primarily use my truck for hunting and fishing, so if I'm at deer camp, easy to detach and head out.

Second reason - I park my truck in my garage. I keep way too much gear in my truck. Camping, tools, recovery, etc. I have a DIY drawer system in my bed (under a shell), and a tons of tools under my rear seat and in the molle pouches on the back of my seat covers. RTT won't fit into the garage

Last couple years the set up has been the Pro z in bed tent and a Airbedz truck bed mattress. It was a great set up super comfortable tons of space and solid price point....but I hated having to clear the bed of gear to set up.

This year I went RTT with a Tepui Hybox the set up is 2 minutes and take down is 5 minutes gear stays put bedding and clothes go right inside its great ! It feels like I'm a kid again in a fort when I'm up in it.20190608_055134_capture.jpg 20190815_080814.jpg 20200810_122201.jpg 20200812_180458.jpg
