Purchased this as my first AR, a budget build my gunsmith sells. I have done a lot of pistol training but only occasional familiarization with ARs and M4s so still getting the hang of all the new equipment to pick. Got a two point sling on it using the loop built into the stock and what appears to be a QD port built into the hand guard. It has a detent in it where the bearings lock in and strong tugs don’t pull it loose. Sling seems to fit comfortably and do what I need it to do. Just curious, whether there is any pitfalls to using this attachment point that would make it worthwhile to get one that mounts on the rail?

I’m not a hunter, won’t be taking long walks in the woods with the thing. The sling will be on when stored and occasionally at the range to get comfy shooting with it, that’s it.

Backup sights on the way, then have go go have a buddy help dial it all in.

You are good. A lot of the picatinny sling mounts have the same quick disconnect.

No issues with these. I have flush cups install on my custom bolt actions. A very slight chance that with using the one on your AR-15 hand-guard could cause wear since it's probably aluminum, and the bearings and other contact points on the quick detach are steel. Over time... a long time (depending on your use), it may put some wear on the hand-guard. If you're that worried about it, you can get a rail mount that does the same thing, but can be replaced easier than the hand-guard.

I tried a swivel mount from my LGS and the thing came apart while I had it on adjusting the sling. The screw holding the cup onto the mounting plate stripped out.

Rather than try anything else gonna stick with direct to the hand rail. I seem to be better off without extra parts in the equation and it seems to hold rock solid.

My Blackfeather stocks are threaded for these, and I can also use one that mounts on the rail.

    To much to list:)
If it works for you then you are good to go. Now a days you can purchase just about anything you want and put it anyplace you care to on an AR. Have fun.

My only gripe would be how close to the receiver it is. I run my sling all the way forward, or as close to it as I can get it. This is obviously personal preference but having it out there does allow me to shoot using the sling to stabilize the gun better.91188C38-9ECC-41D6-A7F9-003253CDE79D.jpg

    1. The front should be fine, I like to run mine further out front like Hurricane above, although it is all personal preference. In the rear you might want to try weaving it through the top of the stock So it folds over on the opposite side(like below) instead of the bottom, it will keep the gun more solid and comfortable when mounted. Test out a bunch of ways to while shooting and see what works best for you.

As an add-on to my above post, and to piggyback with what Tyler said, watch that video (and then buy a sling from Kyle, he’s good people and the sling is the best available). The video explains basics of mounting a sling.

I actually ended up covering the holes with rail panels I installed and mounting a sling point on the support side rail closer to the muzzle which feels much more stable.

As it sits now. Need a light and I think that’ll be that as far as hanging stuff off this thing. Then I’ll be figuring out what to do with the bottom thing.

Seems like the best attachment point to give me more stability without interfering with support hand or anything else. Put it just behind where my support hand falls. Would probably have it further forward on a longer setup where my grip might fall behind the attachment point.
