Are you saying Toyota replaced the 4” with the 3.5” Pulley?

I believe there is a TSB on the tensioner causing a squeal in cooler temps and Toyota changed the tensioner and recco’d the new tensioner be replaced along with an A/C Compressor Bracket. Maybe the bracket makes up for the smaller 3.5” Pulley?

If he's talking about the serpentine tensioner and not the timing belt tensioner it wasn't me but a buddy's GX470.

My buddy ended up just replacing the bearing rather than the entire tensioner. I think his dad had one just laying around that worked. I have no idea part number the bearing is unfortunately.

Edit- he just text me back and said they pressed the old bearing out and went to a shop that sells them and had them find a match. Pressed the new one in.

Yea it was something like that. Never actually done the TSB nor do I know anyone that did. But supposedly the brackets different for the new style tensioner

I just had mine replaced about 3 weeks ago right after purchasing it. It had 213k on it and no record if it were ever changed. Belt, H2O pump, main seal, and drive belt done at Camelback Toyota Phx, AZ was $979 out the door.

I am at 230 and probably overdue slightly for my 3rd belt. I am not too worried about it. Still on original water pump and may change this time. Curious if I can get another 10 yrs out of it. 20 and counting...

New on this forum I have an 03 4.7L. 460kms. Timing belt was done at 320 and it just went/ or something caused it to go. Just wondering. What are the chances that the engine is now pooched?

There's an excellent chance that internal damage was done to the pistons and valve train. Did you change the belt yourself or have a shop do it? I would think you would have some recourse against a shop or manufacturer if it failed within a certain amount of mileage or KM. You are well within the recommended change interval of 90k miles or 144kms. A tensioner is the most likely cause if it slipped time. Did the belt break?

2003 means no VVTI right, doesn't that make timing belt failure a bit less catastrophic?

Ya belt broke. Took one of the covers off and I can’t see the belt so it probably piled up somewhere

The few I've read about that broke, if it was at start up or idle you might be lucky and didn't have any damage. If it was driving down the road chances are higher something else is damaged.

4 options as I see it.
    1. Quick and dirty way would be to grab a cheap borescope from Amazon and pull the plugs to get a look at the pistons/valves with it.
    2. Throw a new timing belt on it and hope for the best.
    3. Pull the heads and inspect.
    4. Pull the engine and put in a lower mileage junkyard or rebuilt.

4.7 V-8 is an interference engine. If your timing belt broke, you'd have to be darn lucky not to bend a valve at the very least. Pulling the heads to inspect would be highly recommended. An engine could continue to function with damage to the valves, especially a V-8, plenty of extra cylinders to keep things going. The side effects however would be highly undesirable. Cylinder compression has to go somewhere, right out the non-sealing valve. Chances are the damage would be severe enough to not allow motor function. Broken pieces inside the cylinder, valve bent into the stuck open position causing continued contact with the cylinder etc. As I like to tell the people that work on my team, hope is a terrible strategy.

In the few years I've been around here we've actually seen a few members have a belt break and it not do damage. :notsure:

Same. Here, t4.org and in person. Interference vs non interference is always a fun topic.

    I feel your pain.
I lost a VVT 4Runner like this when a newish belt broke and rendered mine a parts truck too.
Luckily 4Runners are so crazy in demand that I really didn't turn out losing as bad as I thought?

The water pump stalactites was why I did my TB.

Speaking of which, Toy offers two water pumps as parts replacement. One made in Japan and the other Made in USA (comes with the gasket). I’ve selected the USA one in my cart when I do the TB.

    Hey all,

I have a 2003 Toyota Tundra SR5 Limited(I believe with the tow package) with about 70k miles. My grand parents really only used it to tow their 2 horse hauler(they had mini horses) and hay once in awhile. I believe pretty much all is stock and I plan on doing a over haul before I start hauling(pulling small travel trailer no more than gvrw7k) with it. When I got it 3yrs ago I did a full fluid flush(everything!) and brake pads and serpentine belt and that was at about 60k.

So should I do a timing belt kit with my overhaul? Anything else I may be forgetting?
Currently in my cart for parts for over haul.
    Radiator Hose upper and lower
Trans. Oil cooler (shows sign of past leak)
    Thermostat and seal
    Ball joints upper and lower
Shocks and struts with hopefully a leveling kit.

if the belt has not been done, being its an 05 that belt would be 16 years old now. it is likely drying out and i would indeed do the belt + water pump. BUY OEM or AISIN, from a REPUTABLE source. cheaping out on the t-belt can be a costly mistake. Rockauto sells the full AISIN t-belt kit i believe, this comes with all the same stuff the factory toyota stuff is
