i did try a search on this topic figuring there would be lots of discussion but didn't find much (search wrong?). Anyway, I've been told by some the 4.6 is more than enough engine for most uses (I'll be towing a utility trailer & ate). Others say the 5.7 is the way to go. Should it be a deal breaker either way. I am leaning toward 5.7 - "bigger is better"?

More Power is always a good thing, just knowing it is there........

If your concerned with MPG then go small.

I have the 4.6 and let me tell you, go 5.7.

Pretty sure there are plenty of threads around that point to the gas mileage being about the same between the two. Part of the reason I'll be trading mine in is to get the 5.7

I have a 4.6 with a tow package. I've towed up to 6 or 7k and it was plenty, but I would still go 5.7 next time. MPG is roughly the same and the power is there if you ever need to tow more than usual.

Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I had a brand new 2016 with the 4.6 engine and could not stand the lack of power, but I was coming from a 2002 tundra with the 4.7 (Tacoma size truck with a V8). After 6 weeks I traded for a 2014 with the 5.7. Much better power to weight ratio.

I have been on various Tundra forums for years now. I occasionally see threads regretting not getting a 5.7. I have not seen (at least I don't remember seeing) a single thread where the OP regrets having gotten a 5.7.

I test drove both. Night and day difference. You'll be kicking yourself in the ass if you go with the 4.6 over the 5.7. Do it right the first time...also you can add a SC to the 5.7 :burnrubber:

Because you MAY save 1 mpg, is that worth it to give up the extra horsepower and torque?

5.7 is a little more ($1200) but well worth it as it comes with tow package, transmission and engine cooler. IMO, it will pay for itself many times over, especially if u sale it will have better value.

Yeah joem1cha31 has the 4.6 and I have the 4.7, which has less hp than the 4.6. I can definitely say get the 5.7. Don't make the mistake I did

I had a 4.6 2WD drive for a few months and then traded it because I needed 4WD. The only white double cab (to swap my camper shell over to) that local dealers had was a 5.7, which I bought. So I drove both for a significant amount of time every day, not just a test drive. Keep in mind I also came from driving a Prius for 3 years ;)

I know I'll probably get flamed for this, but the 4.6 had plenty of power for me. Yes, when you mash the pedal, the 5.7 has more power, and you can tell the difference. But for how I drive 98% of time (I never tow anything FYI) I was actually surpised that it didn't feel that much different between the two engines after everything I'd read on the forums.

I will say if your worried you might regret it then get the 5.7 so you don't deal with buyers remorse because you absolutely don't want that. But I know for a fact I would've been okay with a 4.6 had they had one in 4WD at the time. Also the mpg difference for me was about 2.5mpg same tire size (275/70r18) on both trucks which isn't a huge difference but a difference non the less. Someone like my dad could care less if he had the 5.7 over the 4.6, and someone like a number of my friends wouldn't settle for anything less than then 5.7 just depends on what kind of driver you are and what you want the truck for.

I'd be willing to bet that Toyota has the 4.6 in the lineup to meet CAFE Standards and not as a fan-favorite. I seriously doubt that there's a large number of folks buying a full-sized truck that don't want all the power they can get.
