Want to be a Tundra owner... thoughts?

Hi,
Im new here.
last year I sold my 1999 Tacoma TRD and have regretted it ever since. Now im in a position to get a new truck, and why not upgrade to a Tundra. Below is a link to a specific Tundra I'm looking at.
What do you guys think, does it look like a good deal? or is it too much $$ for too many miles? Are there any specific 1st gen Tundra gremlins I should know about or look out for?
any advice is much appreciated.

Why not 2nd gen?

 

Its all about your budget and what else you can get with what you are willing to spend. Hard to tell because we all come from different areas and prices can vary with location. I would imagine you can find something similar with less miles for about the same price. I know its a Toyota, but I would really check it out and size up the way the owner cared for it.

Loved my 03. I'll bet the seller is willing to negotiate some. Based on the little info available it appears to be well cared for. Service records and a mechanical inspection is important to consider here.

 

Definitely nothing wrong with the 1st gens... I work with a guy that almost has 400000 on his 03.... But like others have mentioned, make sure you do lots of research Good luck man!!

 

It's the Truf!! I'll try and snap a pic next time he is in. He is a sales rep so he drives a TON plus he commutes about 160 miles to and from work...And he lives in an area that gets dumped on in the winter time... Pretty awesome

140k is not many miles for the 4.7 and the price is pretty good if the truck is clean. Just ran the KBB on my 02 about 6 months ago... with 120k and it books at about 10k. Only major work to be done on the 4.7 is the 90k service should have the timing belt replaced, and most do the water pump also as the pump is cheap and it is already pulled to do the belt. Check to see if it has the bigger front disk brake kit installed. Other than that, like folks have said, ask to see service records and such. Pull the tranny stick and look / sniff the tranny fluid and do a pretty good look over to make sure things seem ok....check steering rack bushings and front CV boots. Only other thing I can think of is there were some issues with the exhaust headers cracking and it is some serious work to replace them due to access...mine have had a small ticking type leak when cold for about 30k...if it ever gets bad I'll have to replace it. Also if you have access to a Scan Gauge II or the like, plug it into the OBD port and see if it has ever thrown any codes. I've had one 02 sensor go bad and my dash light behind the D for Drive went out...that has been about all that has ever had issues other than normal maint. Love my 1st Gen!

 

It truly depends on what you use this for. For me, I have a boat and a camper, so the Taco would not tow as well. My brother has a Taco though and the Tundra just won’t get the off road capability of that truck. It’s amazing the places he would take that rig, where my old TRD Crewmax would not dream of going. But if you aren’t that “extreme” on the off road side, and have a need for the larger pickup, then I can’t say anything bad about it. For me it’s utilitarian and this vehicle will certainly get me where I want to go .

I was in a similar situation as you and sold my old 2010 Tundra. I gained sores from kicking myself in the behind every day thereafter. It was a huge mistake, but I am back in business with my new TRD Pro. I do not have experience with the first gen Tundra, but have heard nothing negative. I know the 2nd gen is really where they started to be recognized not just as a contender, but a leader in performance, dependability and resale.

Note to all you Tundra owners. Even if you trying to do a good thing, DON”T Sell your Tundra, unless you are getting a new one! If my pain can save just one person, it will have been worth it…
