As part of my purchase, the dealer charged for tint and clearbra (I really didn't want either, but they wouldn't budge - although they did budge on the overall price and it was a great deal). I have an appointment for Friday to get both done. I'm hesitating getting the clearbra done - especially since I have Super White (probably the best color to hide chips and easiest to touch up).

What am I missing in having them skip the clearbra install? Maybe I could get them to upgrade the tint instead.

Nothing. My clearbra started collecting dirt around the edges so I removed it. There were two rock chips on the hood and the bra didn't prevent either. It was also a giant pita to remove

No clear mask for me on any of our vehicles. We hold onto them and after just 5 or 6 years the clear mask will look worse than a handful of touched up rock chips. I wouldn’t let you put it on my truck if you paid me.

Dealer forced tint on you? For which windows? Side window are illegal in some states. Even if it’s legal where you live, what if you move? I’d argue that back.

TRD dual exhaust, Rough Country lift kit and too much money spent.
I had them take the clearbra off of my truck before i would buy it. It covered the whole hood. I could just see it in about 10 years. All cracked and faded.

The problem with the dealer installation is that they tend to use the cheapest of materials and hammer the installers to keep the price way down so they can make more. I took the tundra with dealer tint in to have if ripped out and ceramic installed. When it comes to ppf this stands even more true. The shop I use warranty’s the film for 10years and it is great material. I would do whatever you can to get out of it. If they won’t give you cash back ask for service or parts credit and take the truck to a good shop.

^^this^^, except mine wasn't hard to remove, but i got to it early; was only installed for about 6 months, still very pliable and pulled right off with a little care not to tear.

    ^^this^^

    ^^this^^

i saw a about a 7-8 year old car that looked like the one below; returned home that evening and pull all that shit off.

rock chips; not worried. it's a pickup. already have four in my windshield, and it's not even 2 years old; don't care.

looking like shit, because the "protective" film is yellowed and cracked. no effen way; i would decline that crap all day.

disclaimer: i know nothing about the molecular make-ups of today's "really, super, advanced, genetically modified, space aged, mars tested, astroid proof" films on the market. however, my answer is still the same, no thanks.

not to derail, but i laugh (and can hear fred call lemont a big dummy) every time i see your avatar @TNTundra16. not an episode of S&S that i did not like; my absolute favorites ALWAYS included aunt ester. episodes with julio, the puerto rican neighbor were also at the top. that man was a comedian through and through.

Yeah. Don’t know if you ever plan on moving though. I have a friend who bought a tundra in El Paso and the dealer installed tint. He moved to NY several years later and it wouldn’t pass inspection there. Had to pull it all off.

Just moved back home after a 3 year stint in Chicago. Never say never, but we aren’t going anywhere anytime soon.

No way I would ever put any of those clear protectors on a vehicle, anywhere. They all start looking like crap after a while. Then you have to spend a bunch of time removing them.

High quality PPF has a lifespan of roughly 7 years. Even then I decided to skip out on PPF personally. See if you can ditch the PPF and get upgraded to ceramic window film.

PPF has gotten too popular it seems, local prices have gone from the 3-4k (3 years ago) range to 6-8k. I have quotes from a couple years back from the same installers and all of them have recently quoted me an increase in price. I asked about getting a colored vinyl wrap rather than PPF and the price quotes on those have gone up too. Its frustrating when I think about it because full repaints have similar or lower costs now than the wraps do.

In relation to just a clear bra though, repainting the front end is actually cheaper than the clear bra. Bumper and grill surround quotes have all been <$1000. o_O YMMV

I will never install clear bra on another vehicle.

    Made you buy it....

Fortunately I went to $31,500 from $40,xxx window sticker, so I consider my negotiation the compensation for their BS.

I would still say “no” and go on with my life. I would walk out and snap a couple pictures of my Lexus and how that looked at 9 years old. It was horrible, and they wanted 1500.00 to remove it, plus 3200.00 to reinstall.

Seems like I am in the huge minority with the clear bra. I do a lot of mountain and winter driving and get them on every single one of my vehicles and it has definitely saved my front ends. My 01 land cruiser got the clear bra on late in the game and it has a severely chipped and beat up front end that the bra would have certainly reduced the damage on. May not look the best I guess? But definitely serves a purpose. To each their own! :notsure:

They do their job, I've had them too. It's just that now days the cost for one has gone up too much and surpasses the cost to repaint. I havent seen a clear vinyl that doesnt eventually yellow due to constant UV exposure. Cheaper films crack and yellow in 4 or 5 years. Ive seen nicer films that are >8 years old that have the slightest tint of yellow to them. Just depends on the color of your vehicle too, if its white, the yellow will show more.

I feel like to serve their intended purpose they need to be cheaper than repainting the bumper and front end.

That’s fair! I’ve never had one on a white truck or any color that would show the fade. I can only speak to the protection aspect
