You can not use the controller in a 14. It is not compatible. The panel is but not the controller. We use the factory panel with a custom plate to integrate the Prodigy P3 controller into the dash. I have had several people order our panel for use in the 16's as they can not stand the factory controller. You can go to our website at www.esptruck.com for more info

I know this is an older thread, but thought I would post how I did my brake controller. I got the dash molding for the 2016 and had it cleaned up...

That looks GREAT ! Is that the P3 you installed ? Do you have a part # on the dash piece you bought and how you modded it ? Thanks in advance.....

Hey Ron, take a look at the controller that Mike303 has. If that is the P3, which I have, looks like he bought the panel that Roman listed and modded it to hold the P3. Your thoughts ?

Yes ESP that makes the under seat storage offers one, but this one above is a more molded factory look. Thanks Ron........

Well....was doing some more reading as suggested. I'm torn as I like factory parts and the clean install but brakes and safety are much more important. Not sure wether to try it out as there is some success with them or go to the P3 and ESP panel.

Thanks for the heads up Ron. I better check the return policy... Did you go with the OEM controller as well or P3 or something else?

Out of curiosity, what's your experience and review of the OEM unit?

Ordered my PS3 and ESP cover. Can't wait to install it. Picking up a 10000 pound dump trailer tomorrow and want to see it in action.

Just drove with my trailer. Honestly it pulls so easily when empty that you forget you have a trailer.

I have, not very impressed. At low (like under 10mph) speeds the controller works, almost too jerky even at low settings. At higher speeds, its like it does nothing. Towing my parents tractor (about 8K with trailer) back and forth to my lot while building it got a little hairy sometimes. If Toyota doesn't do something about it soon, I'll be putting in a P3 and buying the plate from Havasubud.

A lot of different opinions on the factory brake controller but this is my experience with it and I will be replacing it. Just haven't spent the money yet on a new one. Hopefully I'll have some free money soon.

is there any more word on the oem controller i like the clean look of the oem. Just torn on if the issues with them are worth getting or the P3. Any feedback would be nice on both of them with people that have them thanks. It would be for towing my travel trailer about 4600 pounds so not too crazy.

Some have reported that the update (Trailer Brake Controller - Braking Feel, T-SB-0231-17, released June 27, 2017) makes it better. However the IBC is a different type of controller and may not feel the same as the P2/3 which have a more definite brake feel when activated. This is an update for years 2016-2017 Tundra and is VIN dependent and 3UR Engine (depends upon previous version of Trailer Brake Control ECU software installed).
"Some 2016 - 2017 model year Tundra vehicle customers have expressed dissatisfaction with the braking feel of the integrated brake controller. Revised software...has been developed to provide an alternative trailer brake feel..."
It is covered under the 36 month or 36,000 miles warranty. I just told my dealer that I didn't like the feel of the brake controller and to check if there was an update available. The tech confirmed that my truck was eligible and installed the update - I have not used a trailer with brakes yet to confirm that it helps.

Figured I’d post my experience with the OEM controller. I pulled my 37’ 8000lb (empty) trailer all last year with no issues. I have the gain set @ 7.5 (if I remember correctly) and can feel it kick in and have had the trailer lock up on an emergency braking incident. At times it is tough to tell if it’s actually working but after having my truck serviced at the end of the year by Toyota there was no weird or extreme brake pad wear noted so that makes me believe it’s working as intended. But without having a comparison to another unit I couldn’t say what’s better.

No can do. It only works on 2015+ models. You'll have to go with an aftermarket controller.

Did anybody ever find out where to get the modified mounting panel like this? I've been looking online, but haven't seen anything like it. It doesn't look like the one made by ESP.

Any information would be appreciated, trying to figure out the best way to get a brake controller mounted on my 2015 Tundra.

I had the work custom done. It was done by car toys since I’mnot that great at fiberglass molding.

Is that for Prodigy or P3 from Car Toys? How much they charge you for the plastic molding?

It’s a p3, but I got that on my own. I just had cars toys do the install. It’s been a few years, but I think it was an hour or two of labor.

Did you ditch your Toyota controller? Curious if you had a factory IBC like us that didn't work.

I'm looking at this one, any reason not to save $100?

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/slredirect/picassoRedirect.html/ref=sspa_dk_detail_2?ie=UTF8&adId=A01604301SNZRX4V2CG3T&qualifier=1594916362&id=401549122022094&widgetName=sp_detail&url=%2Fdp%2FB017NAH5WK%2Fref%3Dsspa_dk_detail_2%3Fpsc%3D1&pd_rd_i=B017NAH5WK&pd_rd_w=BIYZT&pf_rd_p=48d372c1-f7e1-4b8b-9d02-4bd86f5158c5&pd_rd_wg=yBogA&pf_rd_r=KZ83FQZKAD97Y5956CPA&pd_rd_r=3558d754-b8c0-44f8-a296-dbd30e2cddb8

Edit - the P3 price is about $140, the Reese price is about $40, and the Reese has pretty good reviews from what I see. Am I missing something? I've never used a trailer brake controller before, so I'd hate to make a stupid error right out the gate.

for me I like having the saved setting for different things I am towing. It is purely a convenience but is nice. Also with my custom install I knew I needed the buttons in the front. That was the deal breaker for me on most other ones.

Mike303, I was looking at the picture you posted. Are you able to use the manual braking knob on the bottom of the P3? I can't tell for sure, but the picture kind of looks like it's covered up. Am I just seeing things?
