Hey guys I’m new here. I’m having issues with my 01 tundra with 305,000 miles on it. The codes are showing random misfire and cylinder 1-8 misfire. I took to the dealership and said it was the timing, I changed the timing and the problem is still happening. The symptoms are rough idling, ticking noise, check engine light flashing, oil gauge is high, truck jerking, I don’t know what to do, any suggestion? Thanks

first thing i'd do is a compression test. if thats good, from there look at the long term and short term fuel trims and see if you have a fuel issue.

Empty_Lord is right definitely check compression on all cylinders specially 1-8 that’s driver side front and passenger side rear cylinders you can swap coils with other cylinders and see if misfire moves around you can swap injectors around too and see if misfire moves to another cylinder.

I fixed my issues, I had a blown intake manifold gasket.

How’d you figure out this was the problem?

My uncle is a master technician and instructor and I described the situation to him and explained all the symptoms and he told me it was a either a vacuum leak, spark plugs, or some other stuff but I told him I replaced the gasket a year before and he came to a conclusion that it was most likely a vacuum leak . My uncle told me to pour water onto the gasket to see if it sucks up the water and if the idle changes and sure enough it did when I poured some water onto it. We took out the manifold and the the gasket was completely shot, I replaced it a year ago cause I had to change the starting and since I was in there might as well change the gasket but since it was aftermarket, it didn’t explained how to correctly install them and so I installed them incorrectly and a year later it the gasket was shot. Can’t believe the Toyota dealership couldn’t figure out the problem, took them 3 days to diagnose it and told me it was a timing issue when my uncle diagnosed it in literally 30 minutes.

Sounds similar to my stealership experiences lately. Good thing you have a smart uncle.

I’ve had good experiences with the dealership before but I guess for this certain task it was just to much lol. And thanks, he’s helped me with multiple things with my truck, he guides me on how to do these things.

I had a squeaky front suspension and asked them to look at it. My shocks were leaking and on their way out they said, replaced all front suspension, still squeaked. I was sooo pissed. Literally, WD-40 on the ball joints of the UCA and it went away. That was months ago and it hasn’t come back. I’ll never ask them to find a problem again, they will just fix random stuff and send you the bill.

Thats why I do the labor for my truck, can’t trust these dealerships sometimes. I have a squeaky suspension currently, it’s my bushing on the rack and pinion which I’m going to buy a new one in a few months.

Hmm can’t say I’ve ever seen the manifold gaskets fail on these. But there’s a first for anything. Good you figured it out!

Nothing was wrong with the gasket originally, I just did it for preventable maintenance but when I go the aftermarket ones I didn’t know how to install them so I eventually installed them backwards which caused it to fail a year later, I bought oem and installed them correct so I’m certain they will last for a good 10 years

Thank you, I’ve taken good care of it, engine and transmission are great still.
