Yep before I started actually shopping for a Truck I knew I wanted a Toyota, but the lore was they are so expensive. To my shock the American brands were all more expensive. And when looking at the numbers you stated so pay 5-20k for a better stereo that I can upgrade for 800. And the Limited I purchased came with all the features I wanted. The only real drawback when I was looking is Toyota wasn't as good in Towing and that is not something I'm worried about.

Another rebate that started this week had some Platinum Tundra's down to the $47-48,000 range at some dealerships. Seems to be a pretty decent value there if you are looking at brand new. I think I bit the bullet at $41-42,000 for the 2018 SR5 I got in November 2017.

If you want new, yes its outrageously expensive. Toyota seems to retain value better than its competitors but you'll still lose a great deal of value in the first two years. There are plenty of people who want new and will pay this premium, so prices aren't coming down any time soon.

If you want a more reasonable price, find something two years old with low miles and a good maintenance history. You won't get slaughtered on depreciation and you arent in the "shit needs fixing" part of the trucks life.

If you want to save even more, look at 5 year old trucks. The value is just about locked by then and if you plan to resell later you'll hardly take a loss. Find a good specimen and you'll smile at people who buy new with those 7 year payment plans, you'll be paid off in 3 with a lower payment/insurance/registration for just as good a truck.

You can get it cheaper and are you paying in full or financing because rebates are only if you are paying in full. I recommend emailing multiple dealerships and getting them to give you Written email if the deal so then they can start bidding for you money

The one I am looking at is the same trim level, but has the TRD off road package added. I have also tacked on about $500 more in "accessories" that I would like to have on the truck, but the dealers in this part of NC aren't getting close to that OTD price just yet. What part of the state are you in?

I read an article a while back, used 2016 Tundra was the best purchase option. I agree with most people here, purchase used and upgrade certain things you may not like about the truck.

I went from a 2016 Tundra 1794 to a 2020 Tundra Platinum. Would I do that again, nope definitely not. I would even get a 2014 Tundra around or under 28K and that’s here in California.

I got a great deal on my first Tundra (07 TRD 2WD 5.7 DC). It was the dealer’s personal vehicle and had 8k miles. $22.3k in 2009. Great truck. All I did was change the oil, rotate/change the tires, and put gas in it.

I traded it in last month (~150k miles) for a SR5 4x4 5.7 DC priced at $22.7k @ 55k miles (single owner, in great condition).

the value just isn’t there for me on new vehicles. it takes some looking, but you can find great deals on very nice trucks while letting someone else take the initial depreciation hit. that leaves more room in the budget for...fun things.

I think a lot of people are going that route now because even a small sedan like the corolla cost in the mid 20K range! I was at the dealership buying on Sunday and there were myself and one other customer buying new, the rest were all looking and buying used vehicles. Its even more tough for couples with children, and it stinks new vehicles just aren't affordable any more! I think some of it has to do with the added tech, hell my 2020 Tundra has it's own wifi so your kids can stream movies and serf the internet while you drive! All the added tech goes right into the price of the vehicle.

My new TRD Off road had a sticker price of 46,500.00 (I paid 41,500 out the door) and I think those use to hover around 41K or so a few years ago.... the prices just keep going up, thus this will be a long term truck for me! The best thing about Tundras though is they hold their value, thus if you end up buying a slightly used Tundra you probably could have gotten a brand new one for nearly the same price. Car dealerships know however that most people are coming in with buying used mindset OR buying new mindset thus most people aren't gonna pick up on the fact that they could have had a brand new new one for a couple thousand more! Just to give an example I traded a 2019 Tundra Sx which I paid around 36,500 for out the door brand new a year ago, they gave me 33,500 for it and its now on their used car listing for 38K. The average used car buyer will come in and offer around 3600 for it maybe 35 when in reality they could have bought the same vehicle brand new for that!

Going back to the original premise/question of this thread, NO, new Tundra prices are NOT ridiculous when you compare them to pretty much anything else today. New prices for similarly equipped trucks from Ford, Chevy, and Dodge are all significantly more than Tundras. That goes for the base models, where Tundras have a lot more features, to the flagship models, where the extra bells and whistles of the "domestics" will cost you more than the price of a SECOND truck in the base model. Most of these additional options are mostly microchip and software options that really don't cost that much to add, but they can charge a premium for them. And when you factor in ACTUAL Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), the Tundras are a downright good deal, even with the lower MPG's. And THEN you can take into account the resale values. Tundras hold their values MUCH better than any other truck, partially due to their unmatched reliability. This matters, but not as much to me because I plan to drive mine for at least 15 years (the Titan I just sold was 14 years old). Speaking of Titans, they were a close second when comparing value for the new truck dollar. Although I had very few problems with my Titan, I went with the Tundra due to better reliability overall, more comfortable seats (to me), and the current chaotic state of Nissan.

I, too, considered used, but found the same thing many have already spoken of. I would have paid almost as much, or about the same, for a used truck when taking the mileage into consideration, at least here in the Southeast. Considering the length of time I plan to drive this truck, buying new was a much better deal. I got my 2020 1794 with a bunch of options added on for about $48.5k plus taxes. A similarly equipped domestic would have cost me about $10k more. The new Titan was marginally less but I've already covered why I didn't buy another Titan (plus I really don't like the look of the new ones).

Im over in the Portland, Oregon, area and I had been searching for a 2020 Tundra TRD Pro. The only "new" Pro within a 75 mile radius was a black one that had been driven by the GSM and had just under 1600 miles. He wanted full MSRP for a truck that was no longer "brand new" plus $900 for predator steps and $1300 for the dealer installed clear bra on top of MSRP. The dealership would not budge because they had the only newish Pro in the area. Luckily, I was referred to a family friend who is a desk manager at a different Toyota dealership and they were next in line for the next manufactured Pro. Should be here in about 2 more weeks.

My first Tundra (07 model) was $45k out the door (Limited DC 4x4 5.7) 13 years later I replaced it with a Limited Crewmax 4x4 for $50k. I don't feel the prices are much higher. Domestic brands with the same options were running $5k-$10k more not to mention all the time spent at the dealer getting things fixed under warranty (been there done that)

Thats because you have overpaid for all of your vehicles.
    In 07 my DC 4x4 was 34k
    Same truck today about 46k.

Domestics are cheaper look past the sticker. Start dealing and you'll see 15k come off in a hurry.

Your talking about a total under insurance, that happened to you.

You were smart to pay for good insurance and weight out options you could get in case of... Had you not had it...it may have been a different out come. you paid for good insurance sir. You paid for that option, I did the math same as you. I’ve opted for the same option. Ive had a brand new 16 1794 CM, and had a health issue which insurance could give a hoot about. If I have stop/ gap option I probably wouldn’t have to sell it because I couldn’t make payments. I did end up with my 10 grand back that I paid as a down payment, because of the awesome value the Tundra has on resale value.
That said I still got a better deal on a used Tundra with less miles on it than the one I had to sell,
800 vrs 300 dollar payments is a win win any day. I’m happy you got good payout for your 16 that was totaled. Just shows resale value again. I’m guessing you bought another one, right.

I didn’t even go to the dealership,
I got mine with a few phone calls,
And looked at pictures on my computer while laying in bed.
I also asked for a signed agreement form that said sold as advertised, I asked every question I could have thought of and held them to it. Mine was shipped from
Iowa, for 900 bucks. The shipper and the dealership took pictures and what made my purchase really easy was the original window sticker and paperwork was with the truck and now in my possession. winner winner chicken dinner.... some will say I was lucky, and I probably was. Here’s to spread that good luck to all buyers... Think positive.
Boo boobs will happen now and then...

I knew the "desk manager" at a somewhat local Toyota dealership and was told he was going to hook me up once my TRD Pro arrived. When it arrived, I ended up paying full msrp $55,804 which included spray in bed liner and predator side steps. I was a bit disappointed as his sales guy told me I should expect some freebies but nope. I was too happy to even care at the time. Because this dealership was located in the heart of Portland, OR, I was told I saved a mandatory $7k markup on the Pro. I felt like they said this to make me feel better. A stranger at a different dealership was offering me the same deal but their dealership sells all cars with a standard lifetime powertrain warranty. Oh well, at least the truck makes me happy.

Edit: I guess I did get some freebies, one of the sales guys gave me 3 coupons for car washes:rofl:

I bought a 2015 tundra crew max limited just a couple months back. Looks brand new, someone else took the depreciation and I was able to write a check for it. No way I could drop the kind of money they are asking for a new truck. It suites me just fine.

While we’re not quite at the 6month benchmark for the above prediction, it doesn’t seem like this idea has aged well. Those of us who have been waiting to get better deals may have waited in vain. It seems that automakers are controlling their production in order to offset the lower demand and keep prices stable or even higher than before COVID-19. Deals are hard to come by these days, and if the below article is correct, the possibility of this buyers market we’ve been waiting for may have fizzled out before it even happened.
