Yup, figure 8s in the parking lot are part of the process, occasionally chirping tires while at it helps the stuff slosh.

The friction modifier Toyota used to sell is made by Sta-Lube. I've found it at Autozone before.

Sorry if I asked this before, can I use the Lucas oil (synthetic?)for both the front and rear and x-fer case, my rear is LSD. And how much fluid for all three?

I don't have a front diff or transfer case, I wouldn't be able to say unfortunately.

I can’t find my manual spec reference, but can tell you from memory that the front diff and transfer case both take 75w-90. I’ve used Mobil1 and Super Tech on separate occasions (both synthetic).

The rear diff is spec’d at 90, but the best we can find is Lucas 80w-90 for Limited Slip. Its dino (not synthetic) and is required for Limited Slip Rears. It will work in a non-LS diff, as well. Its about $9 a quart and does a good job.

    IIRC

Front Diff is 1.1 quarts. Need a 3/8” Ratchet with a 10mm hex with a 1’ pipe cheater bar. Use your legs if the bolt is stubborn. Do not strip it or you’ll be going to the welder to have a welder weld a nut on. Make sure the fill bolts can be removed before removing the drain. Use a 1/2” PEX line with a funnel taped to the top and drop it down the back of the radiator and bend it in the hole to fill till it over flows.

Transfer is about 2 quarts. ?mm Aluminum Bolt. Squeeze the bottle right in till overflows.

Rear is 3.1 quarts. ?mm Aluminum Bolt. Squeeze the bottle right in till overflows.

Info should be in you manual. There is a manual in the general discussion forum here.

Thanks. Was hoping that I could get one fluid with maybe an additive for the LSD.

And I totally forgot I downloaded the manual.

Heavy-weight oils just naturally smell god-awful.

Case in point that almost ended my marriage early - I picked up an old Muncie transmission for one of my old 60s pickups 12-15 years ago using my wife's Honda Accord. I had a rubber liner in the trunk, but one of the mounting ears of the tranny cut the liner, and it spilled gear oil out, it penetrated the carpet, then into the floor and panel dampener on the trunk floor.

It stank throughout the cabin! So I threw away the trunk liner. I threw away the carpet. I scrubbed the bejesus out of the floor with every chemical known to man. We never got rid of that smell. I fell back on air fresheners. I coated the entire trunk and trunk floor in multiple layers of Fabreeze. Then the entire cabin area of the car smelled like Febreeze and gear oil. We finally just broke down and traded it in for a car of her choice, which cost more than a few bucks. Feel bad for whoever got that beast.

Needless to say, all traditional heavy-weight gear oil smells like ass. I don't know if the new-fangled synthetic stuff also does, but damn if the old-school stuff isn't stanky, soaks into everything, and doesn't go away. I can smell it from a mile away and know immediately what it is. There's nothing else like it.

Most hypoid gear oil has sulfur in it, its part of the anti-wear solution. The fluids with friction modifier have other stinky crap too on top of the sulfur. It does seem to stink more after it has been used for a while, not sure why.

@shifty` that's rough! Nothing like having something super funky soak into carpeting.

Was worse having it soak into the trunk floor, into the body. At least with carpet you can get rid of it! Once it was in the floor and sound tar sound dampening mat, it was OVER. Stink-o-rama.

This is probably the best place for this question as I've stumbled onto this thread....is there a problem with using this?

Asked a buddy if he has amsoil at his shop. He said "Need to buy it from a supplier. I wouldn't get a deal on it unless im a dealer. But i get BG fluid that is as good or better and it covers more".
I don't see a problem but curious what y'all think.

I’d stick with 80w-90 Lucas LS in the rear. Front and transfer case 75w-90.

I just checked my records. My transfer and front diff were recently changed to SuperTech 75w-90 Synthetic.

The rear has what ever the stealer put back there after doing the axle bearing in spring. I think they use 75w-90 Mobil1 Synthetic IIRC. Should be 90w per Toyota Spec but cannot find straight 90w anywhere.

East coast gear supply also has a memo out there stating they strongly do not recommended synthetic gear oil. I'll see if I can dig it up. It was posted on Tacoma World.

They didn't specify front/back so I took it as any differential. It's a good read if you have some free time. Not as scientific as the charts linked above but they made some good points.

Those scientific charts are good info, but seem to contradict the link you put up (a little).

I’m not going to worry to much about all this and just do my best to keep the viscosity (per specs) proper (75w-90 in transfer/front and 80w-90 LS Dino in rear). Change often also.

Chaps my ass on the Toyota Stealer putting 75w-90 Mobil in the rear on mine. That whole deal burned me out with the axle mangles.

My Lucas is dinosaur blood as well. I recall now that when I talked to somebody at Just Diffs they thought Redline Synthetic was good, but I declined because synthetic is not recommended for the Kazuma LSD. I actually had a hard time finding dino oil.

I would like to see more info on those tests. I am curious if those tests have any relevance to daily driving.
