Code P2442 nightmare

I have a 2008 Tundra d-cab with a 4.7 v8 just got this dang code P2442. My question is this, how do i know what is damaged between the Air pump and the Secondary air injection check valve? i disconnected the hose that goes from the air pump to the check valve, disconnected the battery and i got no codes truck is working fine just idling a little lower. has anybody figured this out? dealer wants to replace air pumps and both secondary air injection check valves. charging me $3200 that i don't have. can anybody give me a hint please?

 

I was under the impression that it was the electric solenoid or actuator that fails which makes the valve not function.
There are bypass kits available to disable the air pump system. The truck can run without it but the computer needs to be tricked or made to think it is functioning.
Google the aip bypass kit for Tundra, thinking a few hundred $$.

If you decide to go this route, I would go with their Gen 2 Bypass kit. It is a updated kit over their original. I installed it on my 08 and KNOCK! have not had anymore problems. Kit is plug n play for the most part.

I did the gen 2 kit as well. Worked like a charm. $400 is much better than the $2800 the dealer will quote you.

 

I appreciate the advice, I went ahead and ordered the Gen II bypass Kit. I did buy both Air Injection Check Valves for $120 Each at Rockauto.com, I installed them myself yesterday. It was surprisingly very easy, a ratchet a long size 10 and 12mm a swivel and a long extension. It took longer to figure out what I was going to do. Cleared the codes and VUALA! Big red is running like a champ again. Thank you all for the bypass tip, it has been ordered.

 

If install is really that easy or doable I wonder why dealer charges so much?

Isn't there a way to redirect or add some kind of filter to the AIP inlet to prevent these problems in the first place? I admit I'm not entirely familiar with all the parts of the system.

 

Sure! Part # 911622 ultra power $119.79 bank 1 (driver side) bank 2 (passenger side) are both the same. For those that want to change or having issues with a seizing air pump/smog pump the part number is Ultra power part#306010 for the motor base assembly only $85.79 or SKP PART# skap913060 $94.79 right and Ultra Power P# 332504M complete unit $102.79. I don’t know what the differences in the pumps are but the brackets are different. One is by the passenger side tire and the other is behind the intake. I can send pics of the check valves if needed.

 

Apparently the only thing available is to bypass the system. I took apart the old check valve and all it is, are some flaps. In time due to opening and closing, they bend the opposite way and stay open.

Hahaha, it's more involved than that. Your water pump gets replaced. Majority of cost is labor.

 

I thought the AIP valves were behind the engine. Always heard there was a lot of work to get to them.

 

I guess I don't know much about the system. The water pump is tucked under all the riming belt crap. That much I know when I changed my belt.

 

Yeah, it's labor intensive. What I'm Pissed off about is when they replaced the pumps @ 66k they were supposed to be a improved design. 60 k later having same issues until I installed Hewitt kit.

 

In reality they wanted to switch out both air pumps and both check valves. They told me it has to be done that way.
Check valves- $390 x 2 + tax = 844.35
Air pumps - $465 w/bracket + $305 secondary + tax = 833.53
Parts- $1677.88
Labor- 20 hrs. @ $75 p/hr = $1500
Total = $3177.88

 

So just new check valves was all you really needed? Curious what made you try replacing just the checks?

 

I think mine has been worked on twice by the PO and I'm at 137K miles.

 

ObdII scanner only gave P2442 twice bank one and bank 2 open. I didn’t get any P04— codes given for faulty Smog/Air pumps.

 

I'm glad there's a less expensive fix from a company like Hewitt to provide a less expensive and possibly permanent fix. I can't imagine how many people that paid the dealer to have it "fixed" that had no knowledge of the the bypass.

 

I ran across a TSB somewhere that explained that the whole system needs to be replaced even if the code is for a valve. Depending on model year and vehicle, some components are updated to prevent water intrusion. That’s why the dealer charges so much.... cause Toyota tells them to replace pumps and valves.

 

That's a good reason to never take your out of warranty Toyota to the stealer for repairs. My elderly mom took her 06 Corolla to a local dealer for a check engine light. She didn't ask me for advice and unfortunately came out with her pocketbook $7000 lighter for a new transmission! dealer!
