My daughter is looking at a 2010 RAV4 with 88K miles. She wants me to come test drive with her in the next few days. Is there anything in particular to look for with this vehicle?
Car max says it's 4WD, but it also says AWD, not the same. So I know some basics to look for, but if anyone has RAV4 knowledge, I'd appreciate some input.

I had one exactly like this one a few years back. It was a 2010 4x4 with the 4 cyl (2.5?). It was an excellent reliable vehicle that wasn't bad on gas. The 4x4 isn't a true system in that it only has one speed and won't work over 35mph if I remember correctly. I'd stay away from the 6cyl or awd. They do come in fwd too. Mine was a base model so it only came in 4cyl with a 4x4 or fwd option. You had to get a limited to get the 6cyl and awd setup.

If it’s a V6 and you’re the one that does the maintenance, I’ve got one question. How do you feel about pulling the intake manifold to change spark plugs?

We have a 2011 base with the fake "4x4" and 2.5. Currently at 122k. 4x4 only works under 25 mph. You can lock it in with a button on the dash but it'll disengage over 25mph.

The trans can be a bit rubber bandy since it's an old 4spd auto. There's nothing special with it but it's just simple and reliable.

The headlights kinda suck. I did the 9012 mod to fit. Brighter and better output. Front shocks leaked at 80k. Rear axle seal went at 50k. The rear hatch rattles over bad bumps. Everything else has been normal maintenance.

I've done a few Rav v6s, Camry V6 and Highlander. Same layout. It's a bit more labor intensive, but nothing compared to a flat 4 Subie spark plugs.

The v6 is hilariously overpowered for that poor chassis. For a short while it was the quickest vehicle in the whole Toyota lineup.

I’d say just bring it to someone trustworthy and make them do it. Trustworthy being a strong keyword here. Our old sienna had some transverse V6 and whoever we paid to do the plugs only did the front 3.

Her brother in law will be the maintainer, so I'm not real worried about that.

It's a V6. It appears to be in good shape, at least on the car max website. It's being shipped down from MD and should be here Thursday or Friday. The 4WD disengaging above 25mph doesn't matter. She wants 4WD for beach use only, and she's been my daughter for 35 years, so she knows "Air down, don't be a clown".

The only real problem that may arise is...was it used to tow often? Does the hitch, if it has one look used often? The transmissions don’t hold up well under heavy loads. They say it’s 4x4 it’s more AWD.. you can manually engage 4x4 but if I remember correctly? it transitions to AWD after 25mph. My daughter has the same year and has been problem free, a few rattles and squeaks to track down but not too bad. Overall very reliable and does extremely well on snow/ice and respectable off road. FWIW..Test drove a v6 and it’s a little rocket!

Cant go wrong with a 4-Runner...the miles wouldn't bother me as long as you can see the maintenance records.

I mean they do make BFG KO2s in RAV4 size so it can definitely handle some sand

One of the things I've learned is that sand is different from location to location. Where she wants to go, it can be extremely soft, sugar sand is the local term. And it's accurate. I always air down to 18 psi, but the ramps are usually long and packed, so occasionally I've forgotten to engage 4WD. It takes less than 100 feet to realize it.

while 172k seems like a lot....maybe not so for a Toy. IF its had all of its regular maintenance. Do they have any records they can share? Tranny and diff flushes especially.

I just got rid of my 2012 Runner with 135K on it. Never had a single hiccup. Bought it with 55K, drove it for 5 years and put another 80K on it. Only did oil changes, air filters, plugs and diff and tranny flushes. Had one brake light burn out...that was the only thing that actually "broke" and wasn't part of regular preventative maintenance

I'm going to look at it this evening with her, we'll find out about maintenance then. Worst case, she can get her brother in law to flush.

I deal with that sugar sand up here on the Delaware surf fishing beaches. I don’t blame her for wanting a true 4wd.

I will say my parents had a RAV4 with the 4cyl in the same year for a beach vehicle and it never let them down. Just throwing that out there
