So I hired a company, which supposedly had a good reputation, to come and put some granite stairs in the front of my house. Unfortunately they did them today when I wasn't home, and this is the GD mess I came home too... I especially said I thought I needed three steps and the owner insisted on only two stating there would be drainage issues which I did not understand! I am so f-ing angry right now I already texted and phoned them and they told me they would call me in the am! Who the hell leaves granite stairs looking like this and thinks they did a good job?! Not to mention 950.00 for removal of old steps and they leave this mess, cigarette butts included free of charge!

If anyone has experience with this sort of thing can you give me any info as far as how bad it is, they literally have the cement pad floating on about 3 plus inches of stone! I am so pissed right now I am going to have a head bleed! Thankfully I have not given them any money!

Holy crap that sucks. Are they supposed to be finished? Maybe a miscommunication between the workers and the company?

Disgusting. Agree with Aaron. Tell them to rip it out and deny payment. Hire someone else. I work for a private contractor, this work and the way they left the place is unacceptable.

If they had at least made the outside look presentable, it wouldn’t look so bad. the first step should be much lower to the ground- IMO

The step and landing do look really good.
But yeah they will need to grade out the yard around that and clean up the mess. I really think that will make it finished. The job is only half done. Just my opinion.

In my experience, giving them bad reviews on yelp and other like sites seems to be the most effective way for them to make changes

I believe they needed three steps, I mean the first step is literally 12 plus inches high! Not to mention the explosion of rocks EVERYWHERE!

Yes, mainly because it is floating on a huge pile of rocks! I am guessing this will cause issues later if not corrected as they will shift!

Looks like they used a pre fabbed base or did they pour a base on site? That is what looks to me to be the real issue, that base should have been set at or below grade on the proper foundation to prevent heaving.

If the base had been set correctly your first step would be the right height, IRRC 7 inches is the right height for a riser.

Correct if the steps are not set on a base that has been properly set than yes you will have heaving issues with ice and water

OMG 12" rise!!! ... maybe that is acceptable for big foot but that is ridiculous and pretty certain that may not be code. I don't know because I am not a contractor but I surely know I would never want a 12" rise anywhere in my home especially the front door. Sorry you have to go through this. Very unprofessional IMO.

What a bummer! Sorry to see this shit work. That is very unacceptable.

Never a fun situation for the home owner and also the company owner. I just dealt with a bad stucco paint job with a cash hire. It’s always awkward when two people’s expectations and perspectives are totally different. As a carpenter and a home owner who renovates all my own stuff 98% of the time, and 2% of the time seem unhappy with outcomes. Ive been on both sides of the convo.

Being that your holding the money, the ball is in your court. I would ask for the manager or owner and ask for them to explain how this is acceptable. It may have been the day the worker bee’s wife left him (for example). There’s always a respectful way to approach any situation. I just want you to take a breath before calling as I had to do with my recent paint job. I give this advice since my convo was so awkward since I didn’t take a breath haha. It seems being away from the building industry, I had forgotten what it’s like on that side. Both parties high-fived after he finished the paint job as I requested.

I hope it’s a stressless resolve for you, no one deserves to be in your situation. :hattip:

Ps, I can see what the end goal is with the steps, and it will look great! Modifying anything kicks ass! :p

 We had a neighbor get a driveway poured on Friday and they let concrete sludge run down the gutters. I called the city building dept out. The concrete guys didnt answer the phone so the city cleaned it up, charged the contractor for the bill, and then Red flagged them. That lime will eat your paint up!

I would ask for the owner of the business to come to job site and explain why this was ok.
Give them a chance to fix it

if they refuse then yes say goodbye see you in court and find a actual stone mason to re do the job

I honestly feel for you in this situation.
