Are all Gen 1 light housings all compatible thru the years?

I have two Tundras, years 2000 and 2002. Locally I've found a good inexpensive full set of light covers/units (front, rear, bed) for cheap, like $50, in great condition, from a 2006.

I think these are all compatible years, but sometimes minor changes are made. Can anyone confirm or refute whether these are all compatible for all Gen 1?

I don't have immediate use for them but like to set back affordable parts when I see them.

    Thanks in advance.

Really, that is interesting. Can you elaborate? Will it fit either or neither, what has changed, etc.?

Sure. The OEM Toy parts are different #’s.

    Aftermarket sizes are different #s.

Maybe you could make it happen, but for the $50 you are spending you could add another $70 for $100ish brand new aftermarkets that are crystal clear.

So Toyota changed the lights mid- generation 1? Interesting. Glad I asked.

Try doing an online parts search and you’ll see the Double Cab and Access Cabs are different. The Access Cabs change parts in 2005-05 it looks like.

So as a follow up, I'm wondering if anyone has actual hands on experience that these are or are not compatible and/or Toyota just changed the part number? Or is there a change in the part that makes the not compatible, not fit, etc.?

I've looked on Toyota's site and the part for the headlamps for 2000-2004 is: 81150-0C010. The "change" seemed to occur in 2005-2006 models and the part number is 81150-0C030 which replaces part number 81150-0C030 (discontinued); this one seems to fit 05-06 Tundra's and 05-07 Sequoias. It just seems illogical to change production of a headlight assembly mid-generation... all cost and no gain it would seem to alter production. Why bother?

So has anyone actually tried this?

There are tons of things that changed just between 2000-2003 and 2004-2006, not sure why it would be odd? There were significant engine changes for 05-06 also.

Not attempting to debunk the headlight thing, but there's a clear delineation mid-generation - not uncommon, other vendors like GM did this with the C1500 platform, changing body style and engine types mid-generation - but clearly there are other examples in this.

What I'd recommend is spending the $50 to bunk or debunk it, then get back to us. :D

From what I’ve seen, regarding AC and regular cabs:
The headlights changed for sure, the most obvious difference being the drl relocated to the lower inside corner.
    Corner lights apparently mount differently.
The tail lights changed style, later are just red/clear, but I think they fit earlier models (shape didn’t change, the wireharness on the light may be different).
I don’t think the third brake/cargo light changed.

The double cabs are all different (maybe not the third/cargo light).

Maybe someone with more knowledge can back that up, or correct me.
Personally, I’d like the later style tail lights on my ‘03, but I don’t want to spend the money to find out if they fit.

I hate amber tails and want to buy 04-06 red/clear tail lights for my 00... I too agree the shapes and mounting positions look so similar contemplating buying and trying. Unless someone already has?

I actually like the amber turn tails. I have comtemplated an idea though. On my 05 DC, take the amber bulb, replace it with an amber/white switchback. Tie the amber portion to the turn signal, tie the white portion to the reverse lights. Boom. Amber turns, that double as reverse bulbs for a little extra backup light. Opinions?

I like the idea in concept. I'm not familiar with the DC tail lights though.

Do you think its possible that the reverse light voltage feeding into white part of light could back feed to the turn signal relay fooling it into thinking you're turning? May throw your whole idea in the can.

I don't know much about how the turn signal relays work. Just a thought I had.

Hmm. May need to throw a diode on the turn signal wire to keep juice from flowing backwards. Still just an idea.

As someone who has worked all the gen 1 lights, no, they are the same.

2000-2004 Access cabs are the same
Everything after that, they are all different.

I replaced the original tails on my 2002 RC with the better tails off a 2005 AC.
Heads & tails on 4 door trucks are exclusive to 4 door trucks, so avoid them.

I like that! I am not a huge fan of having amber in the rear tailights. Is is it a direct swap including the plug?

Pretty much plug & play, but I remember having to free up the wiring harness just a little so the correct bulb & socket would reach it's new location, it's been 15 years and I don't remember exactly.
