Toyo A/T IIIs installed - 285 75 18 stock wheels

    Finally got my Toyo Open Country A/T IIIs installed.
    285-75-18 on stock TRD off-road 18" wheels. No spacers - stock 60mm offset
    Suspension is: Bilstein 6112s front set at 1.9" with 1 Coachbuilder spacer on passenger side and 2 on driver side. Rear is 5160 with Coachbuilder +2 shackles. It's about as level as you're going to get with a full tank of gas and ~100lbs worth of crap in/on the bed.
    Removed front flap thing = NO RUBBING ANYWHERE
    These replaced the stock Michelins.
    This size is slightly taller than most 35s at 34.8" dia. vs 34.5" for a '35' and about 3/4" narrower. It shares the same 3-ply sidewall and the same casing as the 35s.

    Observations:
    More comfortable over small bunps and hard-edged road imperfections. Definitely more isolated and insulated feeling, however I do feel like more disruption is sent to the rear and bed wiggle is slightly more prominent. You can definitely feel the increased weight in the steering wheel and the truck lost some responsiveness in the power department.
    Handling is actually better, which can be attributed to the stiffer sidewalls. At cruising speeds the on-center feel through the steering wheel is better and the truck 'floats' over expansion joints and big whoops much nicer compared to the stock tires.
    Highway noise is obvious and above 60mph creates a decent whirling noise.
    Overall, I'm really liking everything so far and I got an insane family hookup on the price, so that's great.

    The last picture really shows how much beefier they are versus stock tires.

    any A/T should be better....the stock Michelins are a joke compared to anything else lol idk why toyota puts them on the PROs.

    Thanks for posting this. I have the same suspension setup and had been curious if the 285/75 would fit on the 1.9" setting. Do you think I could get away without the shims or were the shims necessary? I am wondering if I would be better off doing shims on 1.9" or just bumping them up to 2.5" (top setting). Did you explore that option by chance?

    on stock 18" 60et wheels I have a little bit of clearance from the front fender well liner as well as the body mount. I think it's likely that even on the 1.9" setting you'd have clearance, but I couldn't say for sure. I didn't install the shims so I could clear the tires, I installed the shims to get more height without going to the top setting and further increasing the preload (which seems is still up for debate as to whether you're actually increasing the preload)

    Not that old of a thread, so I don’t feel that bad at bumping it..

    but my local tire shop has 285/75/18 in stock in the tire I want..

    these will fit on a leveled (on 5100 middle setting) with factory TRD wheels, without and trimming? Seems all the research I’ve done says yes!

    Great post, thank you!

    This is my prefered size in the event of me upsizing from the OEM size.

    However, more than the rubbing other things concern me a little, like loss of thin pedal response, sluggish acceleration (specially from stop), and the potential need of regearing.

    Any comments on these subjects by the OP?

    Regearing would be more of a luxury at this point. I don't feel like I've lost much oomf from the truck. It's not quite as lively off the line, but the difference I felt right after the tires were installed has since faded and I really don't notice it anymore.

    You won't notice any significant power loss running the 285x75 it's not as heavy as the 295/70 and 35x12.50

    kind of but not really. What it does is hold the shifts longer, since the taller tires cause the transmission to shift too soon. So tow/haul mode just gets you closer to normal. I know one comment on here was old, but 285/75 weighs the same as 295/70. The tires are roughly equivalent, one is slightly taller one is slightly wider

    I have the same setup too. I like it but have contemplated about changing it up with Method wheels.

    A Bullydog tune will take care of that. I run 295/70R18 Toyo ATIII with a tune and it is very preppy and shifts very smoothly.

    i run a bullydog too. It cleans up the shifting a ton, still does not compensate for the tire height. The ratio of rpm/mph is different when you change tire height, thats what messes with the shifting. Im not saying the tundra is undrivable with bigger tires, it is just not the same
