I've wanted to get my wheels powder coated gloss black (like the pro's) for a while now, but in my area, its going to cost $400-550 depending on if i bring them bare wheels or not. I could put that towards some Method NV's or some Ray 10's.
I decided to give plasti dip a try. I got ahold of @Pudge and @newguy since they had already done it. After picking their brains and watching a bunch of dipyourcar youtube videos i went to walmart and bought 5 cans of black, 3 cans of glossifier, and the gun attachment to save my fingers. Luckily i had bought a respirator before all hell broke loose.

First thing i did was put the cans in a warm water bath. They recommended this on dipyourcar
    IMG_20200501_090614.jpg

After that i put a garbage bag around the rotors, and whiped down the wheels with rubbing alcahol.
    IMG_20200501_093359.jpg

Then i prepped the emblems, might as well do it all at once. I should have used more paper, i still had a decent amount of overspray. It comes off easy though.
    IMG_20200501_093403.jpg

For the first coat, you are aiming for 50% coverage, so just a light misting on this pass

    IMG_20200501_094337.jpg

Then i went ahead and did about 4 or 5 more full strength passes from about 4-6 inches away.
    IMG_20200501_102332.jpg
    IMG_20200501_115935 (1).jpg
I'm really happy with how its looking....i had a tough time trying to decide to put the glossifier on or just leave it with the flat black. I decided that i still wanted it to look like the pro wheels, so i started in with the glossifier using the same method as the black....doing a tack coat aiming for 50% coverage and then going foll boar on thicker coats. I ended up doing about 4 coats of glossifier.
    IMG_20200501_121930.jpg

For being $50 deep on this project, i'm happy with the results. It took about 3.5 hours to get this done. I'll see how i like the gloss, if its too shiny for my taste, i can peel it off and just go with the matte black.

Hell yeah man. Looks great! Make sure you use something to keep the UV light from fading them. Maybe some aerospace 303 now and then or whatever you use for your plastic trim. They will look good for a long time!

I'm going to go over the truck tomorrow with merlins magic elixir to make sure i got all the overspray. I'll hit it with 303. Thanks for the heads up!

I forgot to mention I ordered the black and red trd stickers for the center caps. It was all of $15 for all 4 vs $55 for the actual pro center caps....budget mod

I did this same thing on my old Tacoma TRD offroad wheels, it held up well for the 3 years I had it before I traded it in, also going through a couple AZ summers. I will be doing this same thing to the Tundra soon

Thanks. Very happy with how they turned out.

So far so good. Nothing peeling. I even went through a car wash and it sprayed and brushed the sides of the truck....came out unscathed.

Just curious, I plan to take my tires/wheels off the truck to do this (two at a time). I've done the primer/paint/clear coat before on my land cruiser. Other than cleaning, does plasti-dip require any primer or any other surface prep?

Just a good cleaning and a good wipe down with isopropyl alcohol. If you are taking your wheels off, you could stick index cards around the bead of the tire to keep the overspray off. If not, just put some sort of tire shine on the tires, so it'll peel off the rubber easily.
Just make sure you do a tack coat on the first pass.

Thanks, yeah I've seen the index card method before. I'm not sure what's going to be stronger, primer/paint or plasti-dip. I've had the paint and even offroading, it held up really well other than rubbing it against a rock. But I know plasti-dip won't even hold up to that

you might want to look into powder coating. It'll hold up the best, but its gonna cost ya, and its not a diy. If you are looking for something cheap/temporary, plastidip is the way to go.

    Rough Country Level,
If you maintain plastidip and put a fresh top coat on every 3 years or so on the wheels. My buddy has same plastidip on his 2010 Tundra wheels, bumpers, grill, and emblems now for 5 years and they look same as they did new. He does not off road with the truck, so that might be the difference.

So after about 3ish months, i finally got my trd stickers in the mail (i believe they came from Ukraine) to turn my center caps into the wanna-be pros.
I got the stickers from https://3dcarstickers.com/ they are "TRD 3d car wheel center cap emblems stickers decals :: Red logo/black background :: (83 mm)" They cost all of $16 usd shipped.
    I started with this:
    IMG_20200726_131550.jpg
    IMG_20200726_131030.jpg
I was going to cut around the inset of the cap with a blade and try to just peel that part off, but ended up peeling the whole thing off:
    IMG_20200726_131444.jpg
    IMG_20200726_131617.jpg

I gave them a coating of 303 and hopefully they wont fade in the sun.

Mine have been on for about 6 months now with no issues. I just had new tires mounted and it barely even marked up the plastidip. Nothing a quick touch up can't fix.

Yeah the plastidip is holding up really well. I used a power washer and one of those Meguires balls you attach to a drill on the last wash......no problem at all.
