Those that have done this tech12volt sub/box replacement.. You still have to deal with the OE system leveling off the bass at higher stereo volumes right?

I switched out my factory HU before this upgrade so no issues with that for me.

    Another option is this

Pioneer TS-SW2002D2 8" 600W Shallow Subwoofer with Dual 2" Voice Coils

    it’s cheaper than the kicker

but can the OEM box handle that kind of Power? its just thin plastic. I bought a cheap sub off Amazon for now. 20$. I don't expect much from it. But the reviews were not bad. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CMC6O68/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 If it blows in a week ohh well. The depth should be ok. Its a single voice coil. I opened the box and it really feel like a quality sub. Ill keep you posted.

Just installed the 12-Volt JBL sub replacement. Super easy, I did it even though I currently have one of the many respiratory plaques going around in about 30 mins. Huge difference with Tool? Nope. However, a huge difference with old school Dr. Dre! I'm not looking for a banging system....just something with some more punch and that's exactly what this does. Next will be the door and dash speakers. Also going to sound proof while everything is out. Eventually, it will also be the amp/DSP from 12-volts but I'll let someone else do that and run the power wire.

Im going to get the Tech12Volts sub. After messing with my OEM enclosure its just not worth it to me. here is my setup. I went with a cheap 4ohm single voice coil sub off Amazon. It actually got good reviews from people. Most compared it to much more expensive speakers costing $$$. its something to consider. It dropped right in. I just had to seal the 6 holes and use some self tappers. The connectors on my Sub were Soldered on. There is plenty of slack so you can cut them close as you can at the speaker and use some Female Butt connectors and then crimp.

I have 300 watts of clean power going to it and I can see the plastic box flexing making the bass sound muddy.

Do you happen to have torque specs for the seat bolts you can share. Great write up and thanks.

+1 for another happy customer with James @ tech21volts.
Just a simple swap from stock JBL sub to his JBL and enclosure

I put a cerwin vega in my 2016, the sub sounds way richer. Instead of deep notes coming from the front doors it now comes from the back. CV comes with an integrated ohms selector, so getting 1ohm was easy as a switch, I accidentally connected to 4ohms at first and this halves the wattage and makes no improvement to sound, when I put it to 1ohm it sounds like a different stereos.

The sub was not shallow so I made a ring to shim it out an inch, mdf and a jigsaw… looks and sounds great

I did an 8” Alpine Type S with a 1” spacer ring. I have sound deadened the cab as well and it makes a nice difference.
I would probably spend the $100 more and get the JBL and box from James.

As luck would have it the seat has an indent of a couple inches right there, so there is no contact, this thing pounds the deep notes nicely, I fade the audio to the back a bit to get the cv to stand out more

Does anyone else that used a drop in sub “on the cheap” have any further input?

I am debating between a generic drop in,and Tech12Volts sub box. The sub box would require modifications to the back trim panel so I’m not sure I want to go that route,as I prefer everything left intact

I would like to avoid cutting up my interior if possible, hence why i was asking about a cheap sub-only alternative

i guess the only way is to put something in and see!

Anyone thrown one of James Taylor's subs in their 2021?

He said the sound is hit and miss in the 2020 and 2021 (guess something changed from 2019 ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ) and I don't want to spend $250 if it's not gonna be an improvement. Especially since I plan to do a full blown system upgrade once suspension and wheels and tires are finished up.

Tech12volts and James Randy Taylor recommended this RF sub and box to my 2021. It works with the existing amp and has made a huge difference in sound quality. I also believe the JBL system has a break in period. I’ve had my truck for almost a year and it sounds better than the day I got it.

Interesting. He's been a little spotty on email responses and he didn't mention this to me. Just told me the one on the site is hit or miss with the 2021. I'm trying to throw the guy money but he doesn't seem all that interested in taking it. lol

I have grown bored of my cerwin vega subwoofer upgrade and am now having a soundstage 400 watt mono 2 ohm compliant amplifier. I have learned that these high level/speaker wire hook up systems at the speaker end so it should not be impacted by or impact streaming of music from head unit to main amplifier. Visions electronics in Canada had this amp for $149CAD and around $600 installed. I quite frankly need way more bass that these premium tundras come with. Will update.

The amplifier is all I need, sounds epic, doesn’t reverberate outside the cab and through the neighborhood but pounds perfectly
