It's so fitting, it's like a daily thing around here. This one is still a classic too.

Just ordered KING front coilovers extended travel... Thinking I'll keep the 5100s in the back and get a new set of leaf springs. I'm about to hit 200k miles, time for a new set. Talked to Deaversprings and they said they can make it so their springs aren't as soft and need to contact Archive Garage(thanks Darkness) and see what they can offer. Archive's website says their leafsprings add 3"s of lift in the back. That a lot but maybe they can make a custom set which won't lift as much.

Have Camburg UCAs, King Coilovers on the way... man I'm excited! Now I have a new thought, can I add lockers if I re-gear?

Not sure if a front locker is a good idea though. I've heard that our front diffs can break fairly easily, especially using 4wd in reverse.

Lol, man you have a meme for every occasion, Mcdonalds!(im lovin it). I've read about diffs breaking in reverse too but only when people have pushed their trucks hard in reverse. I checked Nitro gears but only found non locker gears for my year... Got some homework ahead of me, lockers would be an absolute dream come true.

There is a seriously good thread somewhere on TS that you should read. I'll try to find it later today.

    Found it

What tire size is that? Do your tires rub on a full turn? I am looking to follow Professional Hand Models wisdom and run Bilstein 5100’s (#3 clip setting) with biggest & widest tires that will not rub.

Deaver springs ordered. Being custom made to handle up to 600lbs of additional weight in bed without much sagging at just over 1.5" lift. 2.5" lift in front, 1.5" in rear should give me a nice level truck.
Deaver Springs are local guys and I hear great things. Not to mention, what they quoted me for a custom set is less than what the standard ones cost online.

If you're worried about damage, maybe sliders and armor? But I'm used to the Tacoma scene.

That is such a great gif. He's a crazy bastard. But I've also heard our front diff's are just weak in general. I'm not sure why. I think I read that on the Expo forum.

I have sliders... haven't really found much armor for first gens via google searches but then again, haven't searched much either cause armor isn't something I really want. I'm mostly on dirt trails.

Back in TS there were reports of easy breakage by the first guys who ran 35s. I'm not sure if a regear would relieve stress on the diff, seems like it might.

Something I have plenty of time to research. Deaver springs are 8 weeks out. At the end of the day, even having only rear lockers would be amazing

265/70R16 LTX M/S² with no rubbing at full lock, I upgraded my suspension with new coils before 5100's were available. I am using a set of TRD 4X4 coil springs, these lifted the front about an inch and they ride nice & smooth. I don't go four wheeling... this is my work truck and the 4WD is to get me in & out when conditions are slippery. It has never let me down.

I have the same tire size, KO2s with no rubbing at all even before my 1”-ish lift with the 5100s. Mine is a 4x4 AC TRD

Turns out I was wrong about Nitro gears, they do offer lockers but ONLY for the rear. It’s about $600 for the rear locker option. I’ll have to reach out to them and make sure these are good for our Tundras as the gears are for tacos and Tundras.

If I install my suspension myself(never done anything like this, I’ll build a house ground up but haven’t changed my own brakes since I was 16) I’ll be right around my budget.

I love my truck enough to figure it out tho.

I like the way these trucks look with a little lift and slightly larger tires, and I have considered doing this to my 2002, but she performs so well and rides so smooth with the current set up that I decided against a lift a bigger tires.

    @Voss reach out to https://www.justdifferentials.com/

Really good shop and they know Toyotas well. That's where I ordered my 4.56 gears and rebuild kit. They can talk over the options for the carrier and the gears, you'll need 8.4 for the rear and 7.5 clamshell for the front.

So what causes them to break? Just the smaller size + added rotational mass of bigger tires? And why reverse? Just trying to be an info sponge here.

I guess they just can't handle the torque when you beat on them. The only cases where they broke were off road, one involved pulling a stuck truck out in reverse.

There was a sensible reason why in reverse, I can't remember be cause I don't need to worry about front diffs. ;)

New thought, instead of having the springs made to handle more weight which would give me a stiffer ride when bed is empty. I’m wondering if I can keep my bed from sagging with adjustable rear shocks? Get soft springs and adjust shocks to handle more weight when needed...
Thinking I can ask Deaver to make the springs soft and simply adjust my shocks when I need extra stiffness.
Also, a boat is in the plans sometime in the future.

Any thoughts on how I can have a soft ride for daily use while keeping the bed from sagging when needed?

    Thanks!

This is the age old question, but outside of using airbags to help support loads, there isn't a way. Going with softer springs and valving shocks won't get you where you want to be. "Stiffer" valving will just make the ride a little more jarring but won't help carry weight.

When I had a set of springs made I calculated that I carry roughly 150lbs most of the time and with camping gear (I camp light) about 350lbs. 50lbs won't do anything really, and 350lbs won't even flex the stock springs but it will flex softer aftermarket springs. I had springs made by Alcan and asked them for 1.5" of lift with 300lbs. They don't ride bad when my bed is empty (and spare tire out), they aren't sky high either.

My dude, thanks! I’ll ask Deaver to make them 300lbs instead of 600lbs. I’ll consider air bags when I do get a boat.

The suspension install is straightforward and not complicated. It's a good place to save some cash and DIY. Regear is where it pays to have the pros do it.

I got HD leafs and still wish they were a bit stiffer. Deavers come stock really soft so adding 600lb shouldn't make much of a difference. I'd ask them, but doubt you'll feel much difference in ride quality from 300lb to 600lb

Thanks. I’m now considering getting 265/75R16 with 2” in front and asking Deaver for 1” lift. Might not be the “look” I want but feel the drive will be better, I wouldn’t need to cut or change anything to fit these tires with a 2” lift keeping my truck more “stock”.

I doubt I’ll need to regear as I have plenty of power now with 265/70s. With lockers my truck will be more than adequate for what I need it to do.

Just hope I don’t regret not going for the bigger lift/tires in the future.
