2016 TRD PRO. I’ve read the manual and the only thing I can find is using the parking break with the break pedal when stopped on a steep hill. I tried it the other day with pressing the break pedal down firmly and then letting go and the vehicle just rolls back. Am I doing it wrong?

Apparently either no one else knows what you're talking about or doesn't care to chime in. What are we talking about exactly here? Are you thinking that the truck will give slight gas to keep it from moving on a steep hill?

I think you need to press brake and gas at same time

That's pretty much what I would do if I was on a really steep hill and didn't want to roll backwards

When you on a steep hill stopped at a 4-way stop for example, the truck will roll back when you let go of the brake pedal. I thought the tundra would have a feature where you would depress the brake pedal all the way then let go and the truck would hold in that position for a few secs allowing you to gently press the gas and drive off. Right now I have to quickly hit the gas to drive off as the truck rolls back when I let go of the brake pedal.

I tried this the other day as this is what the manual said, but it didn’t work. Maybe I’m doing it wrong?

I think they mean you have to manually control the roll of the truck. There isn't a hill assist that I am aware of. I could be wrong, but it's not terribly hard to mange a hill in an automatic.

Ok, so gently let get of the brake pedal as you press on the gas simultaneously?
Can anyone here confirm that the tundra doesn’t come with hill assist?

Watch this. IF your truck has it, then this would be how you activate it. Also, there is more info further into the video. It's only a few minutes, so just watch the whole thing.

I’ve seen the video and have followed the two methods mentioned in the video and no luck.

Then you don't have hill assist. They don't put it in all models.

My '14 seems to hold the break on a hill for a brief moment, though I really haven't done much testing. My '14 has the tow package, maybe that's part of that feature?

There is a steep entry to a roadway in town here. If I remember I will try it out after work and report back. In the mean time, I will get my owners manual and see what pops up. So far as google can find there is downhill assist, but not hill stop assist in a Tundra.

@MGM What year is your truck? Trim and options? Good to know what we are working with when trying to troubleshoot.

Unless I’m doing it wrong (possible)
I’ve come to the conclusion it doesn’t have it either.

It holds for a little bit on a hill. Now if on a steep hill and I let go of the break it rolls back without hesitation.

I don't think they'd include this (From a 2020 PDF of the quick reference guide) if the truck had hill start assist.

Same on the 2016 guide for my truck. Guess no hill assist. :anonymous:

My Tundra doesn't have it but my Camaro does. Hill assist is something the vehicle senses and holds the car in position for I think the industry average is 8-10 seconds then if there is no input received from the driver it rolls in the downward direction on the hill. Hope this helps even though I know my Camaro isn't a Toyota I have been in different makes that have the feature and they all act pretty similar. EDIT: Some offroad vehicles like the Ram Rebel or Ford Raptor have hill descent control that slows the vehicle while going down hill that is a different hill control feature and my Tundra also does not have that.
